PnP. ABV 14.5%. €36.67 before taxes and shipping charges. Very dark in color, almost dark purple. Clean nose, mostly flowers and spices with sweet tones to it. No hints of alcohol on the nose despite the seemingly high ABV level. High acidity, spicy tannins, dry with heat at finish. Better on the nose than on the palate. I suspect when primary fruits recede, alcohol will be even more noticeable. Struggling to finish the first glass, it’s an alcoholic mess. Maybe the alcohol level is higher than stated. To save my liver, I throw away 1/2 glass. My first experience with this producer and it’s rather disappointing. Buy more? Nope!

8/10/2023 11:57:00 AM - Your tasting note seems to be very incongruent with professional tasting notes. Burghound gives a 94 and WA gives a 92. Not that I believe everything these guys say but it is usually sound guidance to a degree. (barring personal wine style likes and dislikes).Perhaps you had a flawed bottle? What was your aeration time and was food involved? I find that can have a huge impact. (especially with younger burg's)

8/10/2023 1:09:00 PM - Hmmm, I have a case in the pipeline. It will be interesting to see. The ABV statements for sure are always dubious as taxes levied are tied to alcohol levels. I will try a bottle once i get them in the fall and post my findings. Fingers crossed. I have never really steered away from high ABV's but there is concern if it is too high.

Here is a good article on wine level statements (in the US at least).

I would not throw Lumpp under the bus however. He has some really good wines.

PnP and ready to go from the start. Beautiful nose with ripe red fruits and floral notes. On the tongue it is smooth with rich, velvety tannins. Taste profile to me was a lot of ripe red fruits, some leather, some sous bois, and some floral notes. Purists would argue this is on the fruit forward side for red burgundy but to me it was in perfect balance. Outstanding QPR and the best wine I have opened from my cellar so far in 2023.

Edit: On night 2, fruit was still wonderful but a bit less ripe and hints of some game notes came through. Think this will be a very good mid term cellar candidate but it is really fantastic now.

Dark purple red.
Very refined, feminine nose of complex florals, spice, red fruits and mineral elements.
The palate is weightless, open, expressive and youthful, feminine, beguiling and absolutely delicious. Ultra-refined red fruits, mineralite, gone in a flash. Compared to the Bourgogne rouge a few weeks back this is open and ready for business, just so plush and delicious I could drink it every day… my case might not live to see November…

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but while this is decent there is nothing about it that distinguishes it from many ordinary-but-not-special Cote de Beaune wines in the ~$40 range, and it's certainly not becoming of a flagship premier cru the price of which is rapidly careening towards triple digits. It's just...fine.

Accidently opened a second bottle. Delicious deep.berry driven nose and palate with a fine spice note adding complexity. Excellent delineation and focus. Lengthy finish. Liked this a lot more than the bottle in August.
On night 2 this had developed a super ripe fruit cake profile and seemed to lose definition.

From magnum, this showed wonderfully. Beautiful and pure cherry fruit--just so much pinot character. Not the slightest bit overdone--perfect balance of fruit and acid. What a wonderful wine to follow through a meal. Drinking great right now, and easily 7 - 10 years of drinking ahead, especially in mag. This cost $65?! Insane!

I opened a bottle last night and wrote a scathing review, since deleted. Then I realized what an idiot I was because I only gave it 20 minutes breathing. It was thin and tart. I am having the rest of that bottle now, after a decant and a one hour breath. It excellent, and getting better and better. That tells me this needs more age. He is known for long lived wines, and I see why.

Today, this is on the lower end of medium bodied, so match food accordingly.

Hmmm.... I am not sure about some of these ratings and the drinking windows. This seems to be waning but yet the window is not supposed to open until 2024.... and last until 2060...WTAF is JG saying (93+). Maybe I do not understand burgundy yet, I thought I was getting the hang of it... Its a stretch to give it an 89 .. I do not see this getting better. I do understand that tertiary flavours do evolve but I do not see this changing chemical compostion and becoming that. My reference point for tertiary flavours is a 1996 De Vogue Musginy VV when it had about 8 years on it. It was sublime. I have 6 more of these with which to experiment. Fingers crossed.I guess its is the in same category as someone giving at $12 burgundy a 100 point rating. It still makes it into CT scoring.

Caveat emptor.

8/8/2021 8:25:00 AM - PS: the de Vogue Musgny VV comment may seem off.. but it is from a distant memory and was my ephiphany moment for Burgundy) to migrate away from Bordeaux.) The comment was less about de Vogue and more about BH giving this Dominode a 93+ rating with users estimating its drinking window from 2026 - 2060. I just doen see this wine blooming in 5 years or so.

8/10/2021 7:04:00 PM - Thanks everybody, for all the feedback. I have to admit I am slowly getting my sea legs with Burgundy (reds). It is an easy place to get lost. I do have to admit Pavelot was my first foray into buying in bulk (so to speak). It can be intimidating when I do not see what others are seeing. I would appreciate any insights into Burgundies in my cellar. The oddest one I have yet is a 2018 Aurelien Verdet Chambolle-Musginy "Les Condemennes". (sorry off topic here). I thought it was outstanding, but the only reviews I see are on WineDecider giving it an 88. Makes you question your sanity (or theirs). The 2012 Condemennes was the wine that got me into Verdet.

I will hold off on any more '14 Pavelot Dominodes. (I have 15's, 18's and 19's laying down). I do have to admit the 2012 Pavelot "Aux Guettes" are drinking nicely now so there are possibilities for sure.

    Feel free to DM.

10/13/2021 1:23:00 PM - @Mag357 (again). How did your 2014 Dominodes turn out? What was your decant time, if any and what was your food pairing, if any. Having an engineering background, all my tasting notes tend to be instructional in nature rather than descriptive in nature (i.e. best technique to maximize chances for a good tasting experience). Maybe I am just trying to show others how to avoid all the "red burg" pitfalls that I have encountered. I am still cyphering things out as you can tell.

Clean angular sharp fruity plummy raspberry on the nose. On the palate berry fruit, a little smoke but nice and clean in delivery. Much better than I expected. Out of 375ml. Drank half and saving 2nd half for tomorrow. Nose of cherry, slight petrichor and dust. Taste was drying tannins, slight tart and acid for structure. Didnt find much pleasing fruit. This wont be a re-buy for me.

5/26/2021 7:21:00 PM - As a recommendation try this with Maple Leaf farms pre-cooked duck leg. You can get it most anywhere. Walmart, Kroger, Publix if you are in the states. You won't believe what a magic key it is to open Burgundy. I have found it takes 2 - 3 hours to open up tis wine and most sub 10 year old wines (of decent quality). To open a red Burgundy and drink it as is you need either a $400 wine or one that is 10 - 15 years old. I am slowly deciphering Burgundy.

Since my first bottle in Jan-2020 which was a PnP (which was fantastic) .. This has now shutdown. Had three hours in decanter (splash decant) and just barely started to open up on hour 4 of dinner (rib-eye roast with gravy, so it had help). This has backbone for long haul but will require a little patience. If you can find it at a decent price load up you will not regret it.
