7/6/2018 - ccn Does not like this wine: 85 pointsHuge, meaty, overblown, overripe, hot; to the point of tasting like an amarone / vin de paille. I'm sure there are those who would love this wine, but I found it almost undrinkable. Chateauneuf is getting so hot (rumour has it that some recent vintages are approaching 16-17 percent potential alcohol) that it's only pleasant to drink in cool vintages like 2008. We had this wine side by side with the 2008 Pegau which was a model of restraint and balance in comparison -- I'm sure that the 2009 suffered by direct comparison. 6 people found this helpful, do you? 7/25/2015 - ccn wrote: flawedPossible the bottle is off? Fairly lean, mature to declining, interesting minerality but little fruit and tea bag tannins. Strong metallic flavour ruins an otherwise okay but not amazing wine. lacks the depth of last two bottles. 1 person found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (3) |

2/24/2023 - ccn Does not like this wine: 86 pointsSeverely marked by the pyrazines that have tiinsed so many 2004s. Starts out with residual dark fruit and mushrooms with some green bell pepper but quickly the tannins become so hard that it’s almost undrinkable — the wine shut down completely 1 person found this helpful, do you? 9/27/2014 - ccn wrote: 89 pointsVery deep flavour, perhaps a bit bretty a first though this blew off after decanting, good length. Acidity rather than fruit more prominent. Good food wine, less exciting without. Didn't develop appreciably over 2 hours. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

5/25/2018 - ccn wrote: 92 points(from magnum). In the early stages of a great drinking window, but with a lot of room to develop further. Aromatically complex, good length and depth, very classic, restrained St Julien. Boy, do I prefer this to hot-vintage bordeaux! Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

10/23/2018 - ccn wrote: 91 pointsfrom 375ml. Ripe, rich, long, complex. Coffee, ripe fruit. Good ripe tannins. Fairly atypical but very enjoyable. I'd guess will continue to be in a good drinking window for around 5 years but worry that it is too ripe for long-term aging. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

3/10/2012 - ccn wrote: 85 pointsNoticeably brown around the edges. Not enough fruit to support the wood -- this tastes like it's well on its decline. Given other reviews, possibly a bad bottle? Note that we did not decant and only tasted it over 2-3 hours so perhaps it required more airing; but I don't think there's enough fruit left for this to age. Do you find this review helpful? 12/15/2014 - ccn wrote: 89 pointsNice concentration and richness, but the oak is too dominant and wood tannins close down the wine. Quite typical of Lamy wines in their use. I'd guess that the wine has enough richness to swallow the oak in 3-5 years -- wouldn't drink it before then. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

9/27/2014 - ccn wrote: 93 pointsSuperb Barolo -- great concentration without being heavy. Rich, long. Explosive (I don't mean in a modern way) nose. Tar, red cherries -- fascinating depth, kept inhaling over and over. Lots of potential ahead of it but stunning now. One of the best Barolos I've had. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 6/19/2019 - ccn wrote: 92 points(from 375) Open for business and surprisingly mature from the first moment. Wow, there's a lot of structure a complexity here. I agree strongly with Richard Hemming who calls it a cross between a mature medoc and a souther rhone wine: there's structure, lovely acidity and balance, ripe tannins -- but also garrigue spice, olives, tree branches, olive leaves. And of course, that constant resiny sweetness that always gives Musar away in blind tastings. Of the 8-10 Musar vintages I've tasted, this is hands down the best. 6 people found this helpful, do you? 4/6/2014 - ccn wrote: 88 pointsWe've now had 30+ bottles over the last 2-3 years both from magnum and 750 and notes are very consistent. From magnum this is at peak and a wine worth searching out as the best English sparkler we've had. The 750s are disappointing recently (from several purchases) - the wine is becoming one sided and a bit tired. Was lovely while it lasted! 1 person found this helpful, do you? 5/5/2015 - ccn Likes this wine: 91 pointsmight be the best plain Bourgognes I've had. A great purity of red fruit, slightly tart at first put putting on a little sweetness and weight after 2 hours. Good length. Extremely elegant - surely there is a fair amount of chambolle here? Puts many 1er crus to shame. Gorgeous now but should have the stuff for at least 3-5 years. |

8/10/2019 - ccn wrote: 91 pointsStarted out as a fairly restrained but elegant wine with interesting complexity on the nose -- garrigues spice -- and nice balance. After 2+ hours the wine really opened up and gained significantly in complexity. While (like all CndP) not a shy wine, it is more balanced and fresher than many others. Entering drinking window with a long decant, this has easily 10+ years of improvement ahead and may merit a higher score later. |

5/15/2010 - ccn wrote: 89 pointsNot decanted. A very attractive St Joseph that is halfway between a Cote Rotie and a [Crozes-]Hermitage, with a fairly forward, somewhat Cote-Rotie-ish nose (some white pepper, dark-red fruits, a bit of leather and funk), but rather more masculine -- though not at all big -- in the mouth. Good balance and length. 13% alcohol on the label but a very slightly candied / cassis note in the mouth, plus a slight headache the next day, make me suspect that this is more like 14%. It's slightly generically "Northern Rhone", lacking a strong personality, but this is a very nice drinking wine now. The next day, with the fruit gone, it was rather more generic. I'd either drink now or wait 5 years -- the period in between the primary fruit going and the secondaries emerging is unlikely to be very interesting. |
