2000 Alfred Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Kabinett

Very good Riesling from Mosel and unlike most Kabinetts that I’ve tasted (rounder and longer in finish), perhaps on account of its age.
Medium lemon in glass. Complex nose of lemon, orange peel, orange creamsicle, honey, touch of kerosene.
Palate was is very round. Med body, med+ to high acidity, med+ length. An off-dry sweetness at just the right level to avoid any cloying (not even close). Wish I could purchase this wine for the cellar they appear to be long gone. Drink now or continue to hold if you have them (or sell them to me!).

Like my girlfriend, this is shockingly youthful and tight. The nose is loaded with lemon/lime, Meyer lemon, yuzu, and wet stones. Light-medium bodied and oh so tight and concentrated! Just lightly sweet (barely enough to tame the acidity), this is super concentrated and focused like a laser beam. Lime zest, yuzu and river stones. What a beautiful wine that should last and last. I can't stop drinking it. Thankfully it is only 8.0% alcohol, or tomorrow would be a day to rue! Drink 2017-2027+ 91 df 9.3

Private Comparison Of Four Off-Dry Rieslings By Alfred Merkelbach; 5/12/2017-5/19/2017 (At Home): 10 % abv.
Surprisingly, this one was best on day 1 when I was inclined to vote for a 93. I'll see about that with my next bottle. Pineappple, honeymelon and lime acidity, the latter nicely dominating the mineral length as usual and counterpointing the sweetness. A touch of diesel so tiny that even I love it. Initially still some subtle residual CO2. Layered, probably lots of potential. Solist, IMO.

Drank over three nights. Rich, full, redolent with yellow stone fruit, some apple, light floral notes. That said, the acid balance and minerality are nearly MIA, thus leading to a more intense single dimension sweet palate. True it's long, but finishes a bit heavy. Did not shift a lot on successive tastings. Reading other notes it's unclear if this is a phase or just bottle variation. Prior bottle was seven years ago, nearly a lifetime it would seem, and was more compelling. One more of a three pack left, so will wait a couple of years to see what happens. Have the 2016 but not tried yet, may soon.

In glass, it looks pinot gris Sponti/leesy yeast upon cork pull which dissipated after an hour. nose is multifaceted with herbal notes of sage, green spice, lime zest, crystalline white fruits and Lift. Eiswein fruit profile comes to mind. granny smith apple, minerality and citrus. Little or No botrytis. surprised by lack of viscus fruit and pronounced acidity after reading about how hot the vintage weather was. High extract and touch of grippy tannins, balanced no doubt and Lite on its feet, If the fruit profile widens and acidity softens this will rate higher. Needs a full two hours of decant to show its best Purchased as direct import upon release, stored accordingly and enjoyed 40-50 with spicy Indian butter chicken. Drink now for fresh fruity profile or lay it down for 8 years... Na zdrowie

Decanted this time and with Similar tropical notes as last experience but with some citrus and mineral undertones, palate was a little different with an interesting slightly unripe tropical feel, with intriguing cardamon and wet briney rock notes

White apple and pear on the nose and as it warms, some smokey peach notes. Between light and medium bodied (8% ABV) with white apple upfront, with white pear behind for contrast. Brings in white peach through the middle with increasing density as well as some richer tropical highlights towards the far back. Fruit through the middle took some time to resolve and a good amount of the complexity is still concealed by acidity. The acidity itself has some zip, but is acting in more of dampening fashion at present. Minerals, spices and acidity on the backside and through the finish. Should gain in complexity as well as depth with more time. Next bottle for me, Q2 2023.

Wine from the ‘spice garden’ for $30? I’ll take that all day long. The famed Ürziger Würzgarten (Spice Garden of Ürzig, in translation) is known for producing Rieslings with notable….well, spiciness (as one might expect), as well as earthy characteristics. This Kabinett showed hints of both qualities, though left much to be discovered in the future (hopefully!). More than anything, sharp acidity set the tone – not unpleasant, mind you, but certainly eye opening. With that acidity came typical citrus (lime, grapefruit, tangerine) and spice (white pepper, citrus rind) notes, while stony minerality braced both the nose and palate. The wine showed an interesting (and at first a touch off-putting, admittedly) cocoa note; some of that earthiness, perhaps, or simply an odd flavour in the particular bottle? With a day under its belt, things settled well and further notes of pineapple, green melon, and honey showed through. Solid quality; drinkable now, and structure for aging. It certainly seems to have the potential for a good future (though I’ve heard rumblings of plenty of bottle variation), so I’ve tucked a couple away to see what may come. If you’re a Riesling fan, for $30 I’d suggest you do the same!

I know it's heretical but I am coming around to the view that this whole spatlese/auslese category of sweet riesling just isn't worth aging. Some of them change with age without necessarily getting better or worse, a handful get better, and the majority never seem better than they were on day one. Sorry, but there it is, I said it. Within that last group there are some that curl up and die and others that stay pleasant while going a bit soft and flat, and this one is fortunately in that latter category. The fruit here is still tasty and pineapply, it's just lost its energy. In the usual Merkelbach fashion the sweetness level is closer to the norm for spatlese than what usually gets called auslese these days, but it is still pretty soft and fruit juicy without much cut or zing.

Palest lemon colour, plentiful spritz in the glass. A rather light, creamy nose with a faint core of fruit and a whiff of musky complexity. The taste is also very light, not at all what I was expecting, with weak acidity and sugary green grape and apple fruit. Rather dilute. I don't know what's going on here, it should be full of life but instead is just a shadow of what good German riesling can be. Clean and thirst-quenching, but at this price I expect far more, and you'd get more oomph from basic Liebfraumilch. What a shame. [Natural cork; 8% abv; Woodwinters, £20.50].

Nose needs half an hour to open up a bit, and for a hint of nail polish remover to blow off. Scents of lime, herbs, and honeysuckle emerge. On the palate, juicy lime and golden apple, with herbaceous and mineral accents. Svelte and uncomplicated, with a sense of purity - the fresh lime really shines. Some spritz. Light, zippy, delicious.

Pale lemon color with a delicate nose of green apple, lime zest and a hint of flint. On the palate - medium sweetness with high acidity and a light to medium body. Flavors of candied lemon, green apple, stone and apricot with a medium to long finish. Beautifully balanced Riesling at a fair price. Just the right pairing with baked herbed chicken thighs, butter and parsley smashed potatoes, green salad with creamy honey & hot mustard dressing.

This is a considerable increase in quality compared to the 2017, for whatever reason. It has the same nettle and acacia honey nose, except the 2017's slightly off-putting sulfuric element is absent and a brilliant mango and even a touch of grapefruit is added. The well-balanced sweetness, intensity and complexity of the lemon and mango palate is reminiscent of an Auslese or even close to a Beerenauslese.

#17-13, 9.5% abv. I remember being not particularly convinced by this wine a few years ago, and although it's silly to think that the 2012s are ready by any stretch of the imagination, I really wanted to revisit this wine in its shutdown phase to see where this was. It's a little surprising that this is drinking as well as it is. There's a beautiful nose, with some herbal notes, as well as a nice bit of tart tropical fruit -- a hint of guava and pineapple? The palate is racy, but rounded. Although it sounds pejorative, this wine doesn't have the precision of many modern rieslings, but that isn't to say this wine isn't focussed. It's a broader expression of the grape, where the acid isn't so sharply delineated. Well-balanced and fairly expressive already, though more time will certainly benefit this wine.

No complexity at this point, just fresh, perfectly balanced and lovely. Innocent in a way, as it's absent of flaws, or attitude, or ego; it's Riesling, through and through, and it's just perfect. But, it also suggests that its best days are ahead, so may be best to wait several more years for this to settle in and see what it's got up its sleeve - I suspect it's not done telling its story just yet. No petrol, med- body, abundant acids, textbook fruits, wonderful energy. 9,5% abv., thru 2024. recommended

PnP, served non=blind.

Broke while rearranging the wine fridge. I've heard reports of some 2015s shutting down, but if the smell is anything to go by, this was very aromatically expressive. Of course, it might have something to do with using my living room floor as a decanter. So give this lots of air.

"A prime example of what I call “hidden sweetness” – residual sugar playing a supportive and catalytic role while not engendering any overt sense of sweetness – this will perform brilliantly at table as well as in your cellar.” David Schildknecht - I pasted this last part of DS's review on this same wine that perfectly encapsulates the perception of how the sweetness translates to the drinking experience; not troken nor Kabinett, it was very unique and damn tasty. Almost clear in color, I loved the smoky peach notes with biting grip. My first Halbtroken, my first Merkelbach, they won’t be me last. Yowzers.

Found this in the cellar and do not have a record of owning it. Got to work on the book keeping. As Seth Rosenberg says, transparent and light. Clean apples, lime and stone on the nose. Nice acidity and spice on the palate. Really classic young Mosel wine. Great energy but at the same time open for business.

Spectacular, classical Spätlese that's all about lightness and elegance. There's a beautiful aroma that keeps developing with air, strawberries and apples framed by slate, gentle florality and more savoury dusty elements, and an incredible sense of purity and finesse on the palate; flavour conveyed with barely any sense of weight. The sweetness here is very understated (less than most Kabinett), matched perfectly by acidity that keeps this razor sharp and very vibrant. Absolutely stellar.

Have to agree with everyone else concerning this young spatlesse. Ripe apples, chalky pears, hints of lime and quince on the palate with a very nice finish to boot; getting some of the minerality as well; spritzy with some acidity in the background. And for the price I paid, this is a very good buy.
