2010 Château Léoville Barton

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

10/3/2021 - BradA Likes this wine: 94 points

Outstanding! Like a young lady entering her 20’s , the wine is reaching its prime. Firm, supple with a dash of wit. Fresh cedar, great aromatics and a nice finish. Years of advancement ahead, but if you are seeking a prime time Bordeaux— here it is!

Night two

Drier, smooth and no rough edges. The fruit is far more muted and the finish lacks the strength of last night. I miss the fresh power it showed last night….

Suave, smooth with fine grained tannins. Drinks like a wine that has cellared 5-7 years... not sure how I feel about these early approachable wines... isn’t the fun to buy, cellar and discover later...? Anyhow, I digress. Buy this under $40– you will be glad to have a few. Does it hold to 2030.....? I lack firm conviction that it will.

Night 1:
Very nice with a plush opening and deep nose. As you sip, the tight core of fruit shows up. However it is enveloped with a firm tannic structure that begs you to drop these deep in the cellar and leave them. I will purchase more and set them aside. Drink from 2030 on.

Night 2:
The next night revealed a wine showing more baby fat; some may call it a more unctuous wine. Either way, it was tremendous and showed greater depth and some of the graves characteristics I enjoy. I will purchase more and leave them to slumber 8-10 years.

Very fine and super tasty. I have been a long term collector and consumer. This vintage does not disappoint. Very full from the outset. Over the night it calmed and showed a bit of thinness and linear mid palate. As a young wine, this does not count as a demerit. Let’s give it some cellar time to flesh out and reach its potential. Drink from 2026-2045.

Not the full throttle wine I got from his 2015. This is much more nuanced, sublime and gentle on the pallete, dare I suggest Burgundian? There’s years of good drinking ahead on this one but there’s no need to hold if you like a smooth bottle wine with your food. Plenty of dark fruit still exists, giving a backbone to age this wine another 5 to 10 years.

Is it really this good? Should I chase the wine? Years ago, I purchased the 01 and 03 vintages. A spurt of youth caused me to consume these way too early and without staggering, a regret... alas, this vintage may cause a similar experience. Out of the bottle, it shows a rush of new world fruit and smoothness over the palate. Two hours in and the French backbone is evident. Plenty of bright fruit remains in the glass and enough tannin and structure to cellar for another ten years. Drink now thru 2035.

I am a bit perplexed by this wine. Yes, it’s big and plush and lovely to drink.... however, the fullness and ripe fruit cause me to hesitate and wonder if this will truly age and show the gravitas and secondary character of older vintages... I want to love this wine as I have greatly enjoyed the 1996, 2001 and 2005. I do hope others with more experience will add comments and their perspective.

I am not ranking this wine at this time.

Ben popped this and I urged a decant. Frankly this remains a muted wine in a dumb phase. Plenty of substance, yet an unyieldingly wine at this time. Park em for the next 5-7 years.

Roundly disappointing. Drunk over two nights... while it shows fine tannin and some red fruit, there is a real lack of power. Now there is nothing wrong with finesse, but I have to question the value here... will I see myself drinking this in 2030 and rejoicing that I only paid $110? I don’t see that occurring.... there are other wines from the vintage that will develop and show more in the years ahead.

A bit more caramel in color. Paired with sautéed calves liver. This is a winning wine and grand pairing. Just enough acid to cut the richness of the liver, not too sweet either. A finish that remains clean— not cloying. No need to hurry, but in a great spot if you have them.

A solid effort from a vintage that is not overly celebrated. Buy this at the $31 tag and drink over the next Five years. Cedar, Asian spice and grip greet you, whilst a bit of clove knocks back the finish. Don’t hold past 2025.

What an intriguing wine. Ver soft and delicate with a good length on the mid palate. I would suggest this as pure elegance in the glass.

How will this age? I see this more as a mid term wine to be enjoyed from 2024-2035.

A very pretty wine with nice color in the glass. Alcohol level seems a bit elevated on the nose and dries the mid palate. A bit tart on the back end; wishing for a softer rounder finish.

I get the hype, it’s a great bottle of wine. Really plush with a velvet entry. A nose like a box of partagas from my grandfathers office... so smooth and easy. A fine grained close wraps it up and gives you the push for a mid to high 90’s score. At this point, I’d say 93/94. It’s really infanticide at this point. It’s not disjointed, however the secondary notes aren’t there. Give it 5-7 and I think it will be a stunner.

It’s good…. Not sure I would say amazing and at $120 one can do better…. I would buy pichon baron or the leoville wines instead as they can be found for a range close to this.

Brought to dinner at Copine…. I like French Syrah and realize this has become a successful varietal in Washington state…. This producer is highly regarded and the rocks district is the apex of Syrah grapes. However, I continue to find Washington wines are a struggle for me.

A strong nose of asphalt and tar, medium across the palate. I just expected a more voluptuous and dynamic wine, but was left flat.

Lots of cool menthol greated my nose and tongue. Twisted with cedar and some graphite and the vestiges of fruit from a diluted vintage. This is not a wine that will benefit from further cellaring and would be a bottle to drink near term.

This is a seriously interesting wine. Really suave, full bodied and rich. The nose and mid palate scream Cali in he first 30 minutes. Is this Dominus or Screaming Eagle? No, it calms down a notch and shows more finesse after the first hour. While really easy to drink now, park them and enjoy in ten.

As good as advertised. Solid with an inky purple color that exudes depth. I decanted an hour and this was really a good start. Over the next two hours
, the wine flourished. Room for another point as it fills out in the decades ahead.
