From 375ml. Opened at the request of a friend who asked me for an opinion on whether to open one of his last bottles now or hold. I'm not sure I have an answer as I'd say get enough to do both! Definitely the next coming of the 1994, this is starting to shed some of its baby fat and show itself. While still primary in many ways this is beginning to show its own character. While the 1994 changes to dry on the palate entry, this wine hits the front of the palate still sweet and then quickly changes to dry in the mouth. A fascinating wine that will be a pleasure to watch over the next 2 decades. 50+14+14+9+9=96

Dinner with Salil at home. The only thing wrong with this wine was it's placement in the lineup. After 2 dry Rieslings with meats and cheeses we had this before starting to cook dinner. Originally scheduled to have with the semi-spicy Indian dinner where it probably would have shown better. Dark Amber in color as it has been almost from the start showing the heavy botrytis influence ( I believe this has the most residual sugar of the 4 '94 VT Pinot Gris' by a large distance if I remember correctly ). Great apricot and mirabelle flavors mix with the horseradish typical flavor of botrytis and leads into a very long and lingering finish. 50+13+13+9+9=94

Meetup dinner group at Capital City Club, Raleigh, NC. Bottle #14C. Perfumed prunes, oranges and dripping with honey. While all previous bottles have had laser sharp acidity it was lacking in this bottle making the wine still a great drink but a little cloying. Very long finish but cloying nature lingered marring the finish. Clearly unlike all previous bottles so rating reserved.

The Magical 2005 Vintage at Domaine Zind Humbrecht (Turckheim, Alsace, France): The first of the 2005 SGNs tasted today and it is apparent immediately that this is a great vintage for SGN and that these wines are huge, but in proper proportion. It also becomes obvious that aging potential is measured not in years or even decades but in generations. Lots of botrytis influence here. Very honied and an oily texture. Surprisingly complex for something so young. Great freshness from the acidity washes all the sweetness away on the long finish. 50+14+14.5+9+9.5=97

New Year's Eve at Buku with Steve & Barb. Could there be a better wine to end the year with? From 375ml. Reddish-amber in color. Oranges and tangerines mix with some of the Jebsal inner mouthfeel. The wine hits the palate with a thickness that lasts a millisecond and then explodes into a endless dissolving of pure and rich fruit that would last all evening if you weren't so compelled to take another sip. This is truly the master at his finest. Perfect now and likely for the next 100 years. I'm too stunned by the greatness of this wine to come up with additional words. 50+15+15+10+10=100

AP #12-93. From 375ml. Dark gold to Amber in color, this wine was phenomenal. Loaded with aromas and flavors of quince, peach, oranges, caramel-coated green apples, tropical fruits and manuka honey. Clearly a dessert wine but plenty of acidity to wash it off the palate and leave an extremely long glow in the mouth that added a strong note of butterscotch. One of the finest dessert wines I've had and that says an lot given my penchant for sweet wines. Drinking on a perfect plateau right now but should easily drink very well for another 2-3 decades. 50+15+14+9.5+9.5=98

Opened for the 1st Seder. AP #19-77. My first time with AP#19 but just as great as the AP#14 has been. Great balance of components with sweetness being mild and held in check by higher acidity than one would normally expect of a '76. Beautiful green apple aromas. Medium bodied on the palate but delicate in the mouth at the same time. Long on the finish. A great start to the meal. 50+14+14+9.5+9.5 = 97

Tomato dinner at Acme, Carrboro, NC with Mom. AP #14-77. A very inviting amber in color upon pouring. So delicate and perfectly balanced in the mouth. A pointe today but should stay at this very high plateau for many years to come. Comes across as quite ripe but not overtly sweet at this point. Classic mix of sugar, acid, minerality and age done to perfection. This is really my kind of wine and was a beautiful match to the tomato inspired dishes. Greatness in a bottle! 50+14+14+9.5+9.5 = 97

The Once In A Lifetime Dinner (Raleigh, NC): Purchased from Phillipe Foreau at the winery about 8 weeks ago. It is unclear if this wine, made by Phillipe's grandfather Antoine, was ever released or just kept at the winery for family and friends. This bottle had the original cork and an excellent fill level. Label was affixed to the bottle in front of me at purchase time. The pride Phillipe had when putting a label on a wine that his grandfather made, "the finest wine my family has ever produced" was a sight I will never forget. Few of us get to have a job where personal and family pride play such a significant role and I envy people like Phillipe for this. Opened as the first course of a long night we deemed the "Once In A Lifetime Dinner" this is surely the only time any of us will get to have this particular bottling. Paired with some amazing foie gras, my homemade rhubarb-honey compote and Dena's excellent rendition of a recipe that gives me great pride - my Dad's fabulous brioche that he perfected shortly before he passed away 3 years ago. The cork was extracted in 2 pieces by the house doctor and then the wine was immediately poured and served at cellar temp of 52F. Usually color on a wine is something to note but not of much interest. Here, that was not the case as the discussion around the table started with color as soon as the wine was poured. I decided it was the color of red amber, the kind I saw in the Polish city of Gdansk, with gold at the edges, but when swirled it also seemed to have the color of a fine caramel sauce. Wines like this one are tough to put into words as the combination of aromas and flavors is so complex. This wine was medium bodied and had a terrific acidity. There was still fruit sensations and a sweetness to the wine that was not in any way overbearing as time had clearly curtailed the sense of sweetness to a great degree. The vibrant acidity on the very long finish really cleared the wine off the palate but left a residual sensation for a very long time. I find myself grasping for further description when all I can come up with is supreme complexity, terrific balance and a wine to treasure every sip. A small amount was left in a glass by Brian and presented back to me 4 hours later to finish off. In that time the wine lost absolutely nothing and if anything the nose seemed even more open and complex. One of the finest wines ever made, I can easily see why Phillipe had such pride in his eyes when he handed me the bottle 2 months ago. The Goutte d'Or was only made in 2 vintages - this '47 and then again by Phillipe in '90. If the '90 is half as good as this wine it will be a special treat in the future. 50+14+15+10+10 = 99

Dinner at Sushi One. AP #10-89. Label says "Der Grosse Ring". Is this an auction bottling? Medium to dark gold colored in the glass this bottle gave the waitstaff quite an issue to open. Classic Prum WS Spatlese with green apples tossing in aromas, flavors and acidity mixed with excellent minerality. Light and delicate yet rich at the same time - very Prum like with mild sweetness. Based on this bottle the wine seems to be at peak but did the troublesome cork contribute to this? Hard to say how long this one will remain at it's currently wonderful drinking plateau. Dena says 5 years but I think 10 easy. Only downside was a relatively short finish. 50+13+13+7+8=91

Dinner at David's Dumpling & Noodle Bar. After a long hiatus ( for us ) from Chef David's great cooking we were able to revisit some new takes on the wonderful dishes he created at Duck & Dumpling as well as some brand new items that he personally recommended to us. A genuinely nice guy who hasn't let a long career of restaurant success go to his head. Medium gold in the glass, this was from 750ml as we had finished our 375s a while ago. The effusive nose almost attacks you upon opening. Loaded with roses, Autumn baking spices and of course the Rangen terroir signature. Full bodied to say the least but not over the top. Slightly sweet but not much - just enough. I strongly believe a Gewurz needs at least a little residual sugar as well as a high alcohol level to be of outstanding quality and this certainly met those expectations. Especially good match with the Green Papaya Lemongrass shrimp salad. At peak but going nowhere fast. 50+14+13+9+9=95

Triangle Wine Experience “Chave” Dinner (Fearrington House Inn Restaurant): Light pink in the glass, this wine clearly had low extraction and little going for it. A fruity nose, primarily of raspberries was followed by a very dry palate. The winemaker was present and seemed to be firmly in the dry at all costs camp. No complexity and almost no finish. Who had the brilliant idea to put this in the same flight as the Chave Blanc? 50+10+7+5+6 = 78

Triangle Wine Experience “Chave” Dinner (Fearrington House Inn Restaurant): Medium yellow in color and 100% Semillon left me and Fred surprised as it had a Rhone feel to it despite the grape makeup. Steve disagreed and felt it to have more in common with White Bordeaux. Some smoke and beeswax characteristics but also very bitter and woody making for an unenjoyable experience. To me it tasted very oxidized and just not to my liking at all. 50+8+6+5+6 = 75

Indian Food at Steve & Barb’s house: Light yellow in color, this wine showed a great balance of fresh, bright and vibrant fruit with a light bodied palate that tasted as if it had age to it but in no way oxidative. I wonder if this went through the classic White Rhone shutdown period where it tasted oxidated and if so it is amazing how it came out the other side. Lemon peel and beeswax were present and a long, but very light, finish closed things out. A great treat to start the evening. 50+13+13+9+9 = 94.

Full bodied, I found the wine a minor disappointment on the palate, but only in relation to the fantastic nose. A long finish closed out this most fascinating wine. 50+14+12+8+8 = 92.

This wine was a really good match with the Lamb Korma, and not quite as good on the last sips on it’s own where it showed a very sweet and Port/Amarone like tone to it ( no surprise as this was declassified Amarone ). Nice integration on the full bodied palate where it showed very glyceral with lots of dark berries. A medium to long finish added spicy notes to the mix along with a little sweetness, which became much more evident when the wine was on it’s own. 50+12+13+8.5+8.5 = 92
