In a very good place, but plenty of life left. The color is a little thin and browning, but after a little air this opens up and sizzles. Good through 2020?

Amazing juice for the buck; did you purchase yours at Garagiste?

Randomly inserted into a trade tasting. Solid Syrah from the Rhone Valley. Previous notes hold true.

Similar to the Colline but more dark fruit and slightly more tannin on the finish. This was a great discovery on our trip.

Retail $50. Gambero Rosso 3. 100% Sangiovese. Under cork. In order to receive my degree from Penn, I had to write a dissertation. At first, I wanted it to be the greatest dissertation of all time. Then, after many months, I wanted it to be *really good*. Add another year? I wanted it to be "good." Finally, with my funds depleted, my wife exasperated, my ego bruised, I settled on wanting it to be "good enough" (to pass). It was. As a result of the process, I was resigned to the fact that I was an "OK (but not great) writer." Fast-forward a decade or so and there are enough people out there who think my writing is "good enough" to send me gems such as this Brunello so that I might type a few words. While my experience with the region is not vast, I know enough to say that this wine, particularly after some time open, is stellar. Loaded with rose petals, black cherry, tea leaves, and mocha (among many other sensations) on the nose, this wine had no choice but to excite on the palate, and holy mother of god, did it. Rich, but not unctuous, tart, but not bracing, fruity, but no fruit bomb, this wine has all that one searches in an Italian red. And at six years out? It has spent slightly less time in the bottle than it took to get my dissertation approved. Bravissimo.

Drank 2 bottles at Amada AC $140 per bottle, 14.5% abv, big wine but a bit hollow in the mid range, good fruit, it has aged well, probably needed to open up bit more as we PNP’ed, drank with assorted tapas, paella and T-bone steak, had a bottle of Vina Ardanza 2016 after and the group liked the Ardanza a bit more, actually a good value on the wine list, I enjoyed the aging, would drink again.

Petite Sirah is often a little rough around the edges and generally deserves its reputation as a less-than-refined grape variety. However, Vincent Arroyo's Petite Sirahs are absolutely stunning. Still very young, this wine nevertheless drinks very well already (though it will benefit a lot from further cellaring), a wonderful, dark elixir with well-integrated tannins, a bit too much oak on the nose at first but this balances out after an hour. Very good value for money at around US$30. Arroyo's various single vineyard Petite Sirahs are even better and good value for what you get. I'd also recommend you vist the winery, a beautiful and unpretentious little place which provides a very welcome change from the usual over-commercialised wineries in Napa Valley.

14.8% alcohol. This wine was served to me in double-blind fashion at Vintage Wines, Ltd. It was serially tasted over three hours. The bottle was kindly brought by Ken Johnson. This wine shows the absolutely blackest, most opaque robe that I have ever seen. I immediately guessed this to be a Petite Sirah even before tasting it. It requires at least 90 minutes prior to making any judgment. The nose shows very intense aromas of crushed blackberries, vanilla and assorted spices. Full bodied on the palate, with low acidity, monstrous sweet tannins, well-integrated alcohol and flavors in line with the nose. The long finish is silky smooth. Drink now-12/10.

Corked. I have heard disappointing rumors that most bottles from this vintage are flawed. First of four definitely corked, and undrinkable.

5/1/2011 8:10:00 AM - Hhmmmm..... I recently opened a 2005 VA PS. Initially there was a strong band-aid nose (brett) that can be confused with with "corked"; perhaps that was what you detected? The brett nose blew off with a 5 hour decant- the bottle was beautiful. My guess is every bottle shares this trait- most don't consider it a flaw.

It needs another 2 to 3 years of age before opening; even then it will require a decant. The '02 had the brett issue as well; it's drinking great now.

For 20 years old, this one tasted a little 'hot', which I was expecting. Dark purple in the glass, dark plums and blackberries on the nose and palate. Some earth and a little vanilla, too, but overall, a little disappointing.
