12/25/2010 - JasonG Likes this wine: 93 pointsFirst off, you must decant this for three hours. Any less, and it will dominate with a funky, almost moldy forest floor, covering any fruit that's there. (we actually had to open another wine while this was waiting to have with dinner) After decanting, it becomes an even, velvety mouthfeel wine, with super dark fruit, gentle tannins and mild oak. You can really taste the Red Mountain cherry oil (Ceil du Cheval and Klipsun) and remarkably, you can even taste the Walla Walla (some Spring Valley in '00 and '99 reserves). This is a great wine for WA wine lovers, shows off every characteristic you'd want and hope for. You just have to be patient when you open this. I expect this will hold for another 5 years, but I would open and decant it now, otherwise you risk losing the fruit to not enough acid in this vintage. Stellar. There are better wines being made today, but at the time, this shows Ben was way ahead of the boutique wine industry. |

9/24/2011 - GlenviewGSW wrote: 91 pointsAgree with previous posters that a good decant is needed to blow off the initial sharpness of the nose and taste. Once decanted wine displays nice flavor profile and clean finish. Still has quite a bit of acifdity which may allow the wine to continue to age but may also lead to it becoming unbalanced. Don't think it will improve with more age |

Great nose of toasted wood, cherry and that lovely Red Mountain earthiness. On the palate it was lively, striking a good balance between the fruit, tannin and acidity. Cherry, blackberry and a touch of oak. |

11/30/2014 - KenK Likes this wine: 90 pointsDark tense aromas of black toast, new lather, and black cherries. Nice hit of dark sour candy cherries quickly subsides and likes good medium bodied textured flavors with good spices before fallong away. In nice place, but think its time to drink up. |

Initial nose of deep dark red fruit but that quickly faded into a big brawny closed, tannic and tight wine. Six hours later, I see no sign of any change. I suggest holding this for several more years (2009?). Right now, it’s just not a terribly enjoyable bottle to drink. |

I was surprise to find out that the project was inserting a fluorescing gene from a jellyfish into a bacterium. When I expressed admiration at his ability he dismissed it with the comment that this was the kind of project that some high schools teach their students. A quick check of the Internet showed he was correct. Gosh, if a guy in rural Central Texas is doing gene splicing in his workshop how long is it going to be before individuals with far more skill are inserting flavor genes into grapes. It cannot be too much harder to pull a flavor gene or multiple flavor genes from other fruits and put them into grapes. Will I care or will I applaud the more nuanced flavors in the wine. I don’t know; but I am sure I am going to have to make that decision before too long. |

7/10/2005 - CP wrote: 90 pointsThis is a 70% Cab Franc and 30% Cab Sauvignon blend. The Cab Franc earthiness really comes through but is balanced nicely by the brightly fruited CS. Complex but approachable today, will benefit from some growing up time. A very different wine from its 2002 big brother, but another winner from Ben Smith. |

2/17/2006 - CP wrote: 90 pointsDecanted for about two hours. Very purple with a hint of red, quite cloudy, fairly dense. Nice aroma of really dark cherry, hint of chocolate, leather, tobacco. More of the same on the palate, little more dominated by the leather note, just a little cling on texture and tannin, and a huge dark fruit finish. Drinks well now, probably good for another couple years. |

2/28/2009 - last chance wrote: 91 pointsTasted blind from magnum. The nose had aromas of currants, cherries, tobacco and earth. The palate had ripe red fruit flavors, with spices and a dusty earth note. Still fairly tannic, but had a good mouthfeel that progressed nicely through a fairly long, mouthwatering finish. This is drinking well on it's own, but it would also be a very nice food wine. This is the second time that I've had the 03 Coda, and I think that it's my favorite wine from Cadence. It certainly is more approchable than the Cadence Taptiel at this point. I didn't even come close to guessing such a high percentage of Cab Franc in this wine. |
