2/12/2012 - il_diavolo wrote: 88 pointsDark purple in colour. Nose of rich velvety fruits and oak. On palate currant, violet, chocolate and vanilla. Yes its modern and creamy but no surprise and not bad at all - i rated this as tasted and not considered that the 1997 at age 11 had shed a lot of baby fat and was a more interesting drink - so perhaps there is a future for this one too. |

4/27/2010 - il_diavolo wrote: 89 pointshard to fault the quality at this price range. already the nose implies the fruit is serious - on the palate, blackberry with a hint of chocolate and obvious oak (the latter just the right side of bearable) - tannins are quite smooth. surprisingly long too. |

10/6/2011 - il_diavolo wrote: 88 pointsgoodish wine but a slight step down from the seventy six bottling of the same vintage. both the nose and the palate give away a touch too much alcohol (13.5% looks a lo-ball estimate to me) with dark fruit like blackcurrant, raspberry and plum. the fruit is quite intense though with nice persistence. the colour is impenetrable purple. |

2/2/2020 - il_diavolo wrote: 89 pointsFrom 375ml, not my favourite expression of Syrah grape but quite true to form for a Barossa Shiraz and can see why others like it more - for me the warmth and ripeness comes through and affects the wine a bit - aromas of blackberry, plum, chocolate and figs. A satisfying drink in the style overall. |

11/18/2012 - il_diavolo wrote: 93 pointshaving tasted this a few times years ago, this is the first time that I didnt think that RP's rating of 96 (which btw was really RP and not JM) was a panacea. The colour is intense purple. The nose is really classy - sweet dark fruit making you think of plums and blackberries with a very slight hint of oak - a super nose. On the palate there is no way this is overdone (try Two Hands, Greenock Creek or Hentley Farm if you think this is big) with dark fruits, spices and tobacco. Medium/long finish. This will last but personally I would drink fairly soon (1-2 years) as in my experience Aussie shiraz ages in unpredictable manner. This is good now, why wait. |

8/3/2015 - il_diavolo wrote: 89 pointsThe smell is lush velvety black fruit. On palate I get plum, smoke, chocolate. A bit too jammy perhaps? I think at age 8 this has not aged flawlessly and it is starting to feel like it is a bit tired. The fruit is still there but a bit cooked. I see 95pts from critics and I conclude I just don't get Aussie Shiraz |

4/3/2012 - il_diavolo wrote: 91 pointsHaving a few left I thought "no way" in reading the recent notes suggested this has advanced rapidly. But the fact is that the flamboyance and exuberance has gone and to be honest what is left is good but not a mid-90s RP wine and one that was high up in WS Top 100. Nose is blackberry and vanilla. Palate is blackberry but the fruit has a slight rasiny and liqueur edge to it, still a little chewy. Some people may prefer this to the initial over the top jammyness but for me this now lacks a little something with the years in the bottle. Not a wine I will seek again for cellaring but still reasonable QPR. |

2/15/2014 - il_diavolo wrote: 88 pointsIn my humble view this is a poster child of everything that went wrong with Australian shiraz in the last 10 years. Deep purple colour with an intense and remarkable blackberry nose - i liked the nose. Unfortunately it goes downhill from here as the wine, which is very plummy, is patently over ripe and the alcohol makes it unbalanced. This was picked too late - as per the Robert Parker manual. |

Palate wise I get prunes, blackberry and toasted oak, mixed with a certain sweetness. Nice smooth finish. Overall this is a fine wine to last like this at age 11 in a hot vintage - I do believe the vintage heat has left a slight impact in terms of the sweetness and prune flavour but if you appreciate the australian shiraz style you won't be disappointed. |
