Old Hill Ranch
Sonoma Valley

Rich with history, Old Hill Ranch was established in 1852 when William McPherson Hill purchased the land from General Vallejo. As an orchardist and vineyardist (not to mention senator and vice-president of the State Board of Viticultural Commissioners), Hill grew the first peaches in Northern California and was one of the first to grow non-Mission vinifera grapes, including Zinfandel. Hill seemed quite interested in grapes. In fact, in 1873, the Russian River Flag reported that Hill was growing 53 different varieties!

Today, the ranch is owned by the Bucklin family and is lovingly and organically farmed by Will Bucklin. Many of William McPherson Hill’s vines still exist (they were replanted in the early 1880s due to phylloxera) and the vineyard remains quite mixed with over 20 other varieties complementing the Zinfandel. This is truly one of California’s great old-vine vineyards.

Revision 2: edited by AndrewSGHall on 5/27/2014 (view)
(Via Italian Wine Merchants) The Maremma was still sparse when Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti purchased their estate in 1984 and chose to plant Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, varietals that do well in Maremma soils rich in clay and silt. Those initial plantings (totaling 7.5 acres) became the source for the now revered Tua Rita Super Tuscans. Tua Rita found critical success early with their 1990s vintages of their flagship Bordeaux-style blend Giusto di Notri and their acclaimed Merlot Redigaffi, which in 1997 received a 100-point rating and made Tua Rita an international sensation. Tua Rita has remained true to its artisanal ideals and to its modest demeanor, most notably visible in the warm, grandmotherly persona of owner Rita Tua. Bearing the signature of Tua Rita’s famed consulting enologist, Stefano Chioccioli, the estate’s current comprehensive portfolio continues to electrify wine cognoscenti.

More than just the name of a winery, Rita Tua is herself a real person, a thick, heavy, dominant, strong woman. She’s both of the earth and from it, and like the earth, she is nurturing and she is comforting. She would be the person you'd want to help you lift a car to change a tire when you're missing a jack, bail hay before the rain sets in, stir a pot of pasta to feed an army, or simply give a hug that will put you back on your feet. Her strength and power are her dominant features. But her natural spirit that can soothe, comfort and heal is never far away.

Just as “Rita” does to her family, the wines from Tua Rita wrap you in a warm, strong embrace. It is, actually, their dominant feature. But as big and powerful as they may be, they also have a natural beauty that comforts you from the inside and gives you this feeling of invincibility and heat. The wines of 2008 in particular are rich in these characteristics—powerfully delicious, ripe with fruit, and robust, the ’08 releases of Tua Rita are delights to drink. The red and black fruit of all-Merlot Redigaffi hits you like a bolt of sunshine; the sensual Giustro di Notri exhibits structure and velvety tannins; the cassis-driven Perlato del Bosco shows unparalleled purity and finesse; and the Syrah is a seductive, dark stranger with plenty of muscle.

Designation

: Frugal Farmer
Revision 2: edited by anubis on 2/26/2010 (view)
From the back label (2008 vintage): Frugal Farmer - Barossa folklore claims the pioneers were so frugal that when they killed a pig on the farm for meat and smallgoods they used everything but the squeal.
Our Alicante Bouchet is made only from the free run juice, so the skins are not used. As the keepers of Barossa tradition this couldn't go on - so immediately after the juice is drained we crush Grenache and Mataro onto the Alicante skins and ferment them together. This blend makes a deep coloured full flavoured wine that is much lower in alcohol than other reds.
We both win - you'll enjoy a glass of fresh, distinctive, spicy red wine and I'll get the nod of approval from the old timers. Signed Robert O'Callaghan - Winemaker Proprietor

Indeed, the wines produced by Ravazzi in the collection "Collezione Privata Alberto Ravazzi" all have a specific additional designation ending with the letter "o". Examples are Iroso, Furioso, Borioso and Prezioso.
The font used for this specific designation on the bottle label makes the end letter "o" resemble a letter "a" ...
This wine is designated as "Iroso" and not "Irosa".

Here is what photographer Carol

picture: “Durnstein Abbey is in
Austria. I took this picture while doing
a River Cruise on the Danube River.
Durnstein is a quaint little town with
this beautiful Abbey. The Wachau
Valley, where Durnstein is located, is
noted not only for its fabulous wines,
but also for its apricots. You can buy
apricot schnapps, apricot liqueur, and
apricot-infused gin – even jars of
apricot liqueur-infused gummies. A
totally enchanting place to visit.”

K&L Description

Moshin Vineyards 2006 "Lot 4" Pinot Noir comes from a special section of Moshin's Russian River Valley vineyard featuring unique clonal selections. It's a seductive wine, with an elegant nose blooming with rose petal notes touched off by black cherry, strawberry and exotic Tahitian vanilla aromas. In the mouth the red berry fruit glides across your palate like Ginger Rogers, with just a kiss of spicy oak on the finish.

: Cuvée d'Amour
Revision 1: edited by BoyBacchus on 7/28/2009 (view)
Cuvee d'Amour (vitis Amurensis) is a winter-hardy grape native to the wilds of southern Siberia and northern China. Crossing of vitis Amurensis with numerous varieties of European wine grapes have yielded early-ripening vines that thrive in colder climates and produce a bold, dark colored, fragrant wine that is firm and flavorful on the palate yet displays a pleasantly piquant, crisp finish, reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux or Barolo. The oak-aged Cuvee d'Amour pairs well with beef, game and hearty pasta dishes.

Revision 2: edited by Brian1970 on 9/29/2010 (view)
[Winery notes]: Aldo Answers The Call. “Hello Aldo, this is Giovanni. I’m fine, thank you. Per favore, when you come by on Friday bring me some tomatoes, a pound of walnuts, two dozen eggs and a black chicken… Prego.” This was a typical phone order to the rural farmhouse on north Napa’s El Centro Avenue in the 1940’s and ‘50’s. In 1942, Aldo Biale and his mother Christina were left to run the family farm in Napa after Pietro Biale died in an industrial accident. To make a little extra money during those lean years, teenaged Aldo began making barrels of Zinfandel from which he would bottle wine for his family and friends in need of good table wine. Aldo’s home phone was on a party line where nosy neighbors could listen in on calls. To maintain privacy. he instituted the code name, “black chicken,” for his wine. This system of phone call orders for produce, eggs and “black chickens” lasted for decades and even Aldo’s immigrant bride, Clementina, wasn’t in on the code for years. Today, we bottle this special (and fully legal) Zinfandel from the Biale family and nearby vineyards in memory of the old days. If you live in Napa, there’s still free delivery.
