Perhaps the best bottle that I've ever had, this wine was racing right out of the bottle, even before being poured into the decanter. I poured a little into a glass while the rest was decanting and it was amazing to watch this wine get out, stretch it's legs and become a grown up. The nose was surprisingly intense and muscular with notes of dark cherry, ripe black fruits, wet tobacco, olives, mint, juniper, fresh earth, plum flesh, mushrooms and tar. The palate is still youthful and strong with notes of grilled vegetables, snow peas and leather, with dark fruit, loam, fig and cassis. The finish lasts for a minute-plus and I am wowed.

Stunning. Took a moment to open (in fact, when I first poured it into the decanter, it was so closed I thought it may have been flawed!) but after just 15 minutes the wine EXPLODED! The first sniff gave off gobs of soft, elegant, Merlot driven fruit notes of extra-ripe blueberry, blackberry compote, soft wood, chocolate truffles, freshly tilled topsoil, and sweet, wet cigar tobacco. Palate was juicy and opulent and copied much of the nose, though also had an extracted, juicy cherry note and still had plenty of tannin and acidity. Finished went for what felt like hours. May be nearing the peak but will probably hold there for many years. So good! I wish I had more bottles!

Wow. A big, dominant and powerful styled wine with lots of iron, graphite, earth, humus, rocks, minerals and tons of dark, brooding fruit. Currants, richness, meat and animal on the finish. The palate is velour like and very smooth, polished and rounded. A very big and very full bodied wine, it is a monumental showing and a candidate for wine of the vintage for me.

Outstanding. At once powerful and graceful, this wine shows a stunning nose of minerals, wet earth, prune, fig newton filling and macerated blackberries. The rich and full bodied palate has ripe and grippy tannins, more of that fig, prune and plum style, abundant sweet spice notes, minerals, iron and graphite. The finish seems to go on for minutes. A little lackluster on day two but that was more my fault than the wine's. A beaut. Drinking well now but you are in no rush to start popping corks. So glad to have a few more.

Outstanding. My favorite "large scale" Champagne? Notes of brioche, ginger, candied orange peel and white fruit jump right out of the glass which meets a palate with more of the ginger and candied orange peel note as well as apple, lemon and a wonderful finish. I currently have a bottle of this in my fridge and when I drink it, it will be replaced by another. Lovely wine and while it's drinking well now it probably has another five years ahead of it.

Decanted and consumed over the course of about three hours. The wine has a surprising red color turning to brick/burnt orange on the rim. Immediately after being decanted the nose showed stewed fruit, wet tobacco, cedar and black tea, which gained complexity and power over the course of the night. The palate is medium bodied (I expected more on the palate) with notes of old book, mushroom, forest floor, plum flesh, baked blueberry, black tea and very refined, almost papery tannins. Once paired with medium-rare flank steaks, the palate took on more heft and substance and a familiar balsamic vinegar note. The finish was medium, though very pleasant. This wine is at it's peak now, though will remain here for some time. Definitely a great bottle!

The best showing Grand Cru of the night for me. Very fleshy and upfront, its like a puppy- just happy to see you. Very earthy and showing raked leaves, decomposing humus and fresh earth. This wine is more heavy handed with the fruit than the spice but it is a big boy nonetheless and will need lots and lots of time to settle and show properly.

Kept upright for 24 hours before opening. Opened and decanted about 3 hours before and then double decanted. The wine exhibits a slight bricking to ochre rim but is entirely sound (and quite good!). Tastes like old Graves with flavors of dirt, rocks, dried tobacco, stale smoke, earth, pipe tar and a really funky game note that I love as well as plenty of black fruits. It was really fun to watch it open and evolve as right when I opened it I almost immediately turned to the backup bottle as I thought something was wrong but I was wrong! I thought the wine may be over the hill but tannins and acid are still there and it was a joy to drink. Drink now.

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/11/2011 - Reptibark wrote: 94 points

Classically styled and may be one of the better values that I've had in a long time, this wine presented a beautiful brickish hue and burnt ochre rim. The nose was a little closed at first but after 30 minutes in the decanter the nose showed lovely spice, sandalwood, dried herbs and a soft touch of craisin, but leans heavily on the herbal side. Palate was medium bodied and showed more fruit with tones of elegant red fruit and berries, though still showing non-fruit flavors of herbs, licorice and wood. The soft and rounded tannins allowed the wine to flow smoothly and everyone enjoyed it immensely.

NB- This wine was drunk on a very special night, so perhaps I'm giving it slightly more than it deserves...

Right out of the bottle, the wine was going 100MPH. Notes of sweet cinnamon, fleshy fruit, pitted and mashed plums and juice, herbs, anise and baked berries on the nose, while the palate is plush and still ripe, showing lots of that black fruit note, pie filling, sweet berries and spice. Stunning. Tannins are still there but sleek and polished, they act as a guide and sherpa instead of a boxers punch (which, some of these '85s can still have). After two hours in the decanter, the wine really blossomed with a cocoa note coming through and the minerals beginning to mesh. Acid is still sharp and the wine is fantastically perfumed. I want to simply sit here and smell it, but with each taste it seems to get better and better. If you find these available for even a pseudo-reasonable price, I'd jump.

I think people are too hard on '94 and I think they are really beginning to come around and show nicely. This wine came out of the bottle like a bull; no time needed for aeration. Poured into glasses immediately after being decanted and the wine showed tons of scorched soil, cigar box, dried tobacco, chanterelle mushroom, graphite and more. Palate was still full with tons of chocolate, rosemary, blackberry, and pitted fruit. Tannins were still grippy and the finish went on for well over a minute. I think this wine is under appreciated and shows very well. This was poured next to an '89 Angelus, and, sure, the Angelus won, but the Haut Brion held its own.

What a treat to be able to taste this next to the 2009 Rocche and have a glimpse into the '09s future. Tons of anise, licorice, gorgeous spice and delicate balance. The palate is recycled paper bag, dried cherries, bone marrow, dried strawberry, tobacco, fish oil and truffles. At first whiff I almost got an aged CdP thing, but that may have been because I just drank a ton of those. Really wonderful wine.

I was very, very skeptical of this bottle ahead of time. Not because of any physical worries but simply because I'd never had a CdP this old. Decanted from a magnum, this was a rockstar and held place with many other top gunners. Raisin, prune, Christmas cake, cinnamon and very ripe fruit ran rampant. Upon opening it was 100MPH out of the gate, slowed down a bit 20 minutes in and then opened right back up. A wonderful history lesson...

A very ebullient nose right out of the bottle, this wine was drunk after a crazy, long day with grilled cheese and was the perfect end. Didn't bother decanting as the wine is young and I used proper glassware for plenty of swirling, the nose if tart cherry, dried cranberry, on-the-vine raspberry and strawberry. Not as much non-fruit aromas as I expected but still a lot going on. Palate is lush and full figured with plenty of fruit and a finish that lingers for a good length. Very, very good!

Perhaps I'm biased as I've always loved this wine but I found this to be excellent. The wood plays a supporting role to the humus, wet leaves, moss and forrest flavors. Very wet earth-like and reminds me of what I think a tropical forrest would smell like.

The dark color is rich and inviting and leads to a palate of sweet, candied fruit, freshly picked raspberries, strawberry preserves as well as notes of chocolate covered berries and a certain, garge "funk". The palate is full bodied and rich and mirrors many of the fruit flavors in the nose, while also bringing flavors of minerals, plum fruit, brisket and that same "funk" that was on the nose. The wine is lovely, though does well with a good amount of air as evidenced by the fact that the wine was much better on day two- I decanted half the bottle on night one and left the other half in the bottle, under cork. On night two, the wine was far smoother and more polished, though still had a lot of the sweet fruit note that is characteristic of WA Syrah- no mistaking this for anything else. Very good wine and deserves the recognition it has been getting as of late.

The wine is beautiful with a nose of crushed flowers, camphor, tons of red and black fruits and wet leaves. The palate is medium to full bodied with a dark garnet color and flavors of minerals, iron, graphite, lush fruit and a sleek palate. Every time I re-try this wine I like it. Deserves time in a decanter.

We are fortunate, aren't we. Heady and sweet, with Christmas cake, dried nectarine, prune, sweet spices and glaze. So good and so enjoyable to casually sip with cheese and dried fruit. I only had the one bottle and haven't ever seen any others but would happily buy more.

I love this wine and truly think it is the best Cab Franc produced outside of the Loire (and is better than too many Loire producers as well). Sure, it's done in a different style but, on a qualitative level, this wine is phenomenal. The nose if ripe and lush, showing tons of black fruit notes and a sweet and plush style but also has non-fruit notes of graphite, pencil wood, thyme, green herbs and earth. The palate is luscious and silky but is also varietally correct (call it an oxymoron but it's true!) and shows that ironclad minerality I look for in Cab Franc, with notes of freshly picked blueberries, basil, mint and tons of pleasantries. A true gem, this may be one of the best American values in the marketplace.

I think this may have been my first '98 Barolo and the bar has been set high. Very typical Barolo notes of rose petal and lilac, but looking past that were pretty fruit flavors of candied cherry, raspberry, herbs and soil. The wine is certainly young still, but shows well, and I would think you'd comfortably get another 5-10 years out of it if you're interesting in waiting. Lovely tannins and the acid is still there as well. Can't remember how long it was open for, but it seemed to change in the glass with each swirl, so I imagine not very long. Lovely.

WOTN for me. It had a very raw feel to it, still racy, with notes of hard cheese, bacon, grilled meat, and, yes, it reminded me of breakfast. Tannins were still pronounced, yet remained very much in balance with fruit and acid. A treat.

I thought it was excellent but it definitely was one of the most divisive wines of the evening. Beautiful minerals, rocks, Maine sea salt, pomelo juice and an old Riesling like pencil eraser nose met a palate of honey, agave nectar, tropical fruit and peach. Divisive because a couple of people couldn't get over a cat pee quality (one I find in New Zealand SB but not at all here) and so found it off-putting. More for me! Drink before 2020.

This wine was the surprise of the night! A tawny center moved to a brickish rim, where the nose showed extracted fruit, plums, fruit compote, anise, sweet Indian spices, fennel, candied ginger and mint notes. The palate is dusty and medium bodied with flavors of sandalwood, very soft tannins, over-ripe raspberries and cocoa. The wine continued to flesh out and change as it stayed in the glass and it felt like every smell and sip were different from the previous one. The finish was graceful and medium-long in length with a very soft, fleshed out tannin feel. This wine shows no signs of slowing down and my only regret is that I don't have more.

Sure, the wine is young, but it is definitely trying. One of us had never had Mouton and I think this presented a fine introduction to the house. Was more floral than I thought it would be and showed tons of macerated herbs, pencil shavings and tobacco but still had enough ripe fruit to remind us that it's a baby. Plums, crushed blueberry, stone fruit and forrest floor came from the nose leading to a minerally palate that was full of ripe, gripping tannins, bright acidity and a medium length finish. Will be better in a few years, but not one to lay down for decades.
