Wow. My tasting chart was full to the brim with descriptors for this wine. The nose had creme de cassis, vanilla, herbes de provence, smoked meats and some ephemeral white flower (gardenia?). Massive but incredibly precise in the mouth: could literally pick out the Cab Sav, Cab Franc and Merlot. Franc comes first with green bell pepper and other funky woodsy elements, almost bark-like. Dominated then by creme de cassis, tobacco and caramel. Underneath broods anise, graphite, black pepper, and clove. Perfect chalky tannins graduate into a beautiful chocolate and vanilla finish that lasts. What a treat!

Massive berry nose. Canadian bacon, freshly crushed black pepper, clove and other holiday spice, burning autumnal leaves...finishes caramel and vanilla bean. Needed at least 45+ decanting time to get by that modern-ish oak, but brilliant when it blossomed.

Yes, the finish lasts like 60 seconds... Decanted for 6 hours (in bottle for 2 and carafe for 4). The darkest cab I've seen. Incredible nose: spice box, wet forest floor, creme de cassis, brioche, creme de menthe. In the mouth: Plum, cassis, milk chocolate, blueberry, blackberry jam, tobacco, cedar, cloves. This wine is borderline suffocating, with a spherical structure that balloons out into your whole mouth...and then continues to expand. If I was into this style, I would probably give this monster a 98. Completely over-the-top wine.

Drank perfectly. Sweet strawberry core is rounded by a very fresh, almost zesty tannic structure. Nice vegetal note, nothing overbearing--loamy more than manure. The finish is generous but feminine, fading off into florals, elderberry, lavender.

Drank at Camino in Oakland. Everyone loved this bottle. Quite savory--bloody, smoky, bacon--but with great freshness and a very pure blueberry component. The wine developed throughout the meal, with warmer spices emerging. Quite serious but very pleasant. Really wish I left some in the bottle and watched this develop over a few days. Just a stunning Syrah from Salinia.

The structure of this white was reminiscent of a young red Samur-Champigny. Awesome! Very bright up front with luscious peach and melon. Short mid-palate of pure granite moves into a pretty harsh "clamp down" that feel like a lingual baptism. The tongue emerges with a the lingering Pastis 51/Ricard coating. Was glorious with scallops.

This drank beautifully last night from 375ml. Closed nose at first, bit of blackberry. Opens after 90 minutes and continues developing over 4 hours. Nose of pure red fruit and wet earth. Soft entry and intense, luscious mid-palate. The weight is dense but compact. Very rich raspberries, black tea, dark chocolate and scorched rubber. The tannins are beautiful, guiding to a long spicy finish. Awesome!

Tasted at the vineyard and was taken aback by this wine's elegance and complexity. Deep nose of melon, honeysuckle and honey as well as wet stone. Beautifully layered and textured, with a fine balance of fruit and mineral. Some apple, honey and almond, then toasted bread, then the reemergence of the minerality. Not traditionally a Cali chardonnay guy, but this was good (if expensive: $60) nectar.

THE RED WHALE California Syrah Tasting (The Jackson Arms): Loved this wine. Very nice rose and white flower component floats above blueberry and green pepper. Very nice, refreshing body, light on its feet with vibrant acidity, with a richness that you register in your short term memory. That sounds ridiculous, but it's true. A great wine.

Dark and smoky, exotic black pepper and clove, mouth-watering leather component. All this streaks through a rich, almost jammy medley of red and blue fruit. Impressive balance. Surprisingly nimble given the size and lushness of this bottle. Awesome stuff.

A stunning wine suggested by the som at ZKG in Paris. Absolutely seductive nose, reminding me of a hypothetical blend between a Chablis and Rhone blend. Not sure of the varietals. Nose shows oak, papaya, peach and lemon. Medium-bodied, very pure mouthfeel, great minerality persists through a long, creamy finish. 93+

Delicious and young, still light and spirited. Lemon, petrol, orange flower nose. Light but plush mouth feel, good acidity and balace overall. Intriguing musty mushroom and earth governs transition from mid-palate to finish. Oxidized nuttiness develops with air and warmth. Very enjoyable.

Purple in color. Very expressive nose: dark berries, pine, black pepper, melon and licorice. Great full-bodied, creamy texture. Black cherry, creme de cassis, plum, black tea, anise. A precise, entirely seamless transition to the finish, which lasts 25+ seconds; bright fruit, almost apricot-like. Awesome, beautifully structured Pinot.

A light ruby purple color. Very sweet nose of currant jam, cinnamon, and provençal herbs. Pretty full in the mouth (for a Pinot) with a candy-like strawberry jam primary note offset by wonderful acidity and secondary flavors, including anise, wet earth and Granny Smith apple. The finish is fairly long and brings with it some straw and barnyard. One of my favorite American Pinots.

The Red Whale California Pinot Tasting (The Jackson Arms): My favorite wine of the tasting. Some found this nose a bit off-putting, but I loved it. Reminded me of a Loire Valley wine, with green pepper and fresh, crunchy tart berries. It tastes like a Cali wine, though, lovely fresh fruit accompanying the briary characteristics. Glad to see this kind of wine being made in these parts--and at $27. Bravo!

A perfect bottle of CdR. Rich and deep nose of cassis, pepper and clove hovers beneath a smoky ensemble of rubber, oak and manure. An absolutely seductive mouthfeel, with very sweet fruits wrapped in burnt bacon. A very focused and clean finish. This baby improved over several hours in the decanter. Bravo.
