Fantastic! Our best guess is that it’s an early 2000s bottle. Very yeasty and buttery - almost like a freshly baked croissant! Elegant yet complex. Warmed up into a nice apple note, with a hint of apple skin. So so good!

Krug Lover Dinner with Olivier Krug (Daniel Dal Ban 1876 (Tafelspitz) Düsseldorf): not blind, Magnum
A perfect Grande Cuvee 1st and 2nd Generation from Magnum side by side. For me both are perfect champagnes. You get everything what you wish. Both with bubbles, both fresh and the most multi-layered champagnes you can imagine. But the finish is fresh, filigree and precise. Olivier Krug never had both bottles from Magnum side by side. For him the most faszinating bottles of the evening. 99-100

Showing its age like a silver fox — aging character is definitely noticeable but it wears it beautifully and still has vibrancy for miles. Honey color and nearly still. Almond and sherry and whispers of caramel on the nose and palate then sweet green apples then classic Krug character and then a finish for days with a tight acid line and minerals and cream. Fleeting hints of mushrooms suggest it’s worth drinking soon. Overall one of the most beautifully aged bottles of wine I’ve had — the age is adding interesting notes that are still in balance and loss of energy hasn’t set in. Excellent.

Update: still thinking about this bottle 6 weeks later so bumping from 98 to 100 points. The most beautifully aged wine I’ve ever had or could imagine — age characteristics adding to the whole story and detracting nothing. Wonderful.

A private dinner (Restaurant Zoldering, Amsterdam, NL): ID 215027, “received its cork spring 2015”, released 2018. An individual batch of 200 (!) bottles. Original disgorgement, aged in the cellars at Krug until release, recorked in 2015. Pale golden colour, youthful for age, gentle but perfectly lively mousse; the most amazing nose, fresh and incredibly complex, so layered and deep and fragrant, rich but pure and precise, white walnuts and spiced honey and citrus fruit and flowers, only a hint of mushroom - pointless to offer individual descriptors; the palate has the elegant, minerally core of the terroir and the bright and lively acidity of the vintage, wonderful seamless freshness at 32 years of age, very youthful, gentle bitters; crème patissière on the complete, very long and layered finish that keeps on going. An effortless masterpiece with decades ahead of it.

"Champagne BYOB #14, all tested blind. Last bottle in third flight of 6 Krug vintages. WOW ⭐️ ATTENTION!! This is something really extra. Imagine 14 wine geeks being served 6 Krug vintages not knowing what's in the glasses. People start whispering and talking, and they all talked about the same glass. Immense power, striking elegance, purity and finesse, delicate and find-tuned like a Mozart symphony. Got goosebumps thinking I'm in the presence of greatness. This was the perfect vintage/bottle/timing! 100p"

This is my tasting note #992 on Cellartracker and this is my first time I have given a wine 100 points.

I love Krug 1988 and I have had it many times from bottles but this time I tasted it from a magnum for the first time and it was mind-blowing. Krug Clos du Mesnil 1985 was my previous favourite champagne but I think this is even better. Krug perfume on the nose, acacia honey, packed with fruit and very balanced. Everything is there. A beautiful wine. It was exactly the same two hours after we opened it which bodes well for the future.

Popped and iced for 20 min. Served in Riedel Vinum Champagne stems at 49 F. Clear straw yellow color of deep intensity, A pronouced and fully developed nose of toasty vanillia , caramel, coffee, roast nut, yeasty bread, dried apricot, orange blossom, honey and delicate pear. The richness is balanced by a focused freshness, medium-high acid, pronouced flavors, creamy mousse, and a extremely long complex finish. Extraordinary -Perfection in a glass. Best Champagne I have ever tasted.

Massive prunes, immense nose, possibly the finest scent i have ever experienced.
Overall the 88 is my favourite but the scent alone is worth the £

I purchased and stored Krugs on release from 1976 to 1996. Had many older vintages of Krug - my favorite being perhaps the 1964 in the mid 80's. My sense is that this is the best of all of them. Impeccably well stored, never since release seen a temperature above 53 degrees. On the table with a Peter Michael 07 Chardonnay, a Peter Michael cabernet blend, and a Drouhin 90 Griottes Chambertin, this was the richest of all of them. Remarkable balance and length with chardonnay in the lead notwithstanding the blend. A touch of nuttiness and citrus. A real show stopper. If you can't give 100 points to the best bottle of Krug you've ever had, having had many, what can you give it to? First wine on Cellar Tracker I've ever ranked above 96 I believe. That said, I believe that the 96 just might edge out the 88 in time.

The question to ask if you ever have the chance to drink a really well stored bottle of the Krug 88 in the next several years is - what champagne have I ever had that I would rank above this?

Dopo tanti anni di "corteggiamento", dopo aver aspettato sempre l'occasione buona che mai si presentava, ieri sera una bottiglia di vino era piena di emozioni.
NON mi ricordavo il tempo di provare quella sensazione, in cui ti rendi conto che un bicchiere di vino può trasmetterti con estrema facilità, è bastato vedere mio padre che dopo tanti anni di pazienza, con un movimento leggero stappa questa bottiglia e se ne versa un goccio nel bicchiere.... quel bicchiere che fino a prima brillava come una preziosa gemma, poi è diventato un calice dorato luminosissimo.
L'attesa nel vedere la sua espressione e poi la tensione sparisce lasciando un sorriso orgoglioso sul suo viso.....
Finalmente anche il mio bicchiere si trasforma in oro colato, penso di avere in mano uno dei gioielli che più ambivo, non per la sua rarità ma per la sua storia, è un gioiello che profuma di festa di paese con quelle note di mandorle e nocciole tostate assieme a quel miele e zucchero caramellato e crosta di pane appena sfornato, più sta nel bicchiere e più si impreziosisce con profumi di mare, mango, ananas che mi portano alla mente il ricordo dei caraibi per poi tornare da noi con pesche gialle, pera e banana "fritta" nel burro appoggiate su un letto di crema pasticciera e "finalmente" chiude con un profumo leggero di cognac, un tripudio di sensazioni , la voglia di assaggiarlo è ormai al limite e finalmente dopo l'assaggio il gioiello dorato che era nel bicchiere si trasforma in un sigillo impresso nel mio cuore.
Bocca intensa, trasuda tutte le viscere minerali che stanno nel sottosuolo, la bollicina è cremosa e vellutata mai scontrosa, l'acidità è tanta e fa salivare talmente tanto che l'impressione iniziale è che manchi di corpo ma poi ritorna in maniera preponderante tutta la frutta fresca, secca e tostata che richiama le sensazioni al naso chiudendo con una vena leggermente ossidata, bocca magnifica per eleganza e per persistenza aromatica .

Grazie a mio padre Eugenio che ha custodito questo prezioso gioiello per berlo con me.
L'emozione di ieri sera si chiamava Krug 1988.

I'm reluctant to award 100 points to any wine, but if there's a better champagne out there. I want to know it. I'll never have enough of this wine. Rich golden color, nutty and creamy with perfect balance and acidity. Benchmark wine for me and always an multi-sensory experience.

Bob brought this masterpiece to our dinner at 32 East, when it blew away the wonderful vintages of Chateau Margaux we also shared. The Krug was in a perfect middle age of drinkability. Deep in color and flavor with an active mousse and no hint of a tertiary stage. Lots of the signature Krug caramel which did not overpower the intense toast and citrus core of flavor. In retrospect, what is perhaps surprising is that although it was obviously a "serious" and powerful champagne, I felt could drink endless glasses, so fresh was it. Terrific mouth feel, Endless finish. Endless pleasure.

Exactly what vintage Krug should be, especially given the vintage. Enjoyed over the birthday weekend in Dallas. Did not pair with anything but don't think anything would've been worthy of this bottle.

Lots of bubbles, nutty, brioche, and a fair hint of acid left in this 33 year old gem. Tertiary notes are starting to show but don't steal the show.
