  • 2012 Sine Qua Non Grenache Stein

Serieus lange, romige afdronk. Algemeen / potentieel: 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 16 + Algemeen / potentieel: 8 = 90/100

Colour: Bright ruby red with a somewhat wider edge. Aroma / bouquet: The first impression: soft sweet red fruit, strawberry compote. gingerbread, refined wood. Slightly limited complexity for SQN. Taste / Aftertaste: Wonderfully seductive SQN, as usual. Mouth-filling and concentrated, thick and juicy, but also slightly less complexity in the mouth than I now expect from SQN. Seriously long, creamy finish. General / potential: 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Aftertaste: 16 + General / potential: 8 = 90/100

  • 2013 Sine Qua Non ...And An Eight Track

Colour: Light velvety orange-pink, strikingly dark for rosé, strikingly light for red wine. Aroma / bouquet: Soft, seductive and pleasant bouquet. Atypical for rosé, very typical for an SQN rosé based on 85% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre and 5% Syrah. A bouquet of wild strawberries, sweet gingerbread and even some cinnamon. Taste / Aftertaste: Also in the mouth this is hardly a rosé in almost anything and an SQN rosé in everything. Soft acidity, thick-juicy, concentrated and mouth-filling. Retronasal impressions of strawberry compote, licorice and gingerbread. Seriously alcoholic (15.4%), but given the power of this wine not disturbing for me. General / potential: According to many, well past its expiration date, I think it will still be EXCELLENTLY drinkable for a few years and above all 'enjoyable' '. 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 12 + Taste / Aftertaste: 16 + General / potential: 9 = 92/100

  • 2011 Château Latour Grand Vin

Kleur: Diep robijnrood. 50 + Kleur: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Smaak / Afdronk: 15 + Algemeen / potentieel: 10 = 91/100

Colour: Deep ruby red. Aroma / bouquet: Even after decanting, this greatness remains in a kind of hibernation. Pleasant, semi-closed bouquet with subtle tertiary notes. Taste / Aftertaste: Still seriously vital and youthful in the mouth. Pleasant acidity, mouth-filling and concentrated, but at this stage still with a mainly dormant complexity. Refined tannins. But still too youthful at this stage, especially in relation to the somewhat tertiary nose. General / potential: Potentially a greatest wine. But DEFINITELY not at this point. Decanting helps, but patience helps EVEN more! 50 + Colour: 5 + Aroma / bouquet: 11 + Taste / Aftertaste: 15 + General / potential: 10 = 91/100

5/10/2021 6:38:00 AM - Thank you for the response! Curiously, I generally do not like the "typical Cali Style wines" with more ripeness, extraction and higher alcohol (or such from the "old world" either as has become the case all too often in CdP and some Bordeaux properties for example). My style preference is for bright acidity and just ripe grapes that generate wines in the 12,5%-14% range rather than 14,5-16% monsters. Shall I say more "feminine" wines rather than "masculine" ones? With regard to Burgundy being helped by climate change, I have heard several winemakers in France suggest so, including Jean-Nicolas Méo of Méo-Camuzet (and Nicolas-Jay in Oregon). It isn't the good years that it has helped, rather the bad years, in that there are fewer under-ripe vintages. i.e the vintages are more consistent. I have noticed this in the last decade or so. I think they do worry that in the future they may have trouble keeping the balance of ripeness and acidity, but so far they have been able to pick earlier and still make classic wines in the warmer vintages. On another subject... I have a branch of our family in Northern Holland...my last name is Poiesz... and I hope to visit when the pandemic has run its course. If so I would be honored to share a bottle of wine with you. Should you find the opportunity in the future to visit the NYC area, I am a short car ride away in New Jersey and would offer the same to you here. Cheers!
