Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

A difficult to pin down nose, with some black fruit, earth, and vanilla. The Cab Franc character came through on the palate, with plum, more earth, and faint spice, and a flinty overtone on the finish. Had I not known it was a California wine, I would have mistaken it for Burgundy.

Nose: smells of those cheap chocolate covered cherries and just a little mushroom. Palate: Nicely balanced. Black cherry. Great mouth-feel with a good long finish

Fifteen year old cab franc purchased about a month ago directly from the winery. Originally decanted for sediment, but quickly realized there was still some youth in it. Let it decant for 30 minutes before drinking the first glass. Medium garnet in color. Very floral nose with hints of dark cherries and minerality. This wine was in a great place with a nice balance of secondary characteristics and fruit - cherry cola, peppery spice, cocoa, leather, and tobacco. The tannins had melted into the wine leaving a very smooth, velvety finish.

Dark red and black berry fruit, laden with spice (Asian spices?) and licorice with a peppery edge. Fuller bodied and fairly tannic, this should evolve nicely for 5-7 years and is drinking well now.

Pnp'd into a decanter....first glass a bit tight, closed, tannic....89-90.

3 hours in and this has evolved. Bright red Franc fruit, lots of cherry, a touch of herbal essence on the nose and palate and a hint of oak/cedar. Still slightly tannic with drying properties but not too much out of balance. I'm thinking if there was more left to sit for a few more hours, that might calm down, too? A nice little wine at a very fair price. 93 at the finish.

Eat, drink, and be merry! Lovely and velvety. Perfect with a triple-cream Brie and some salty ham. Notes of currants, jammy-blackberry, smooth oak, and followed by vanilla on the back end. Chewable!

Still a little fruit forward. Great with a rib eye after decanting for 2 hours. Could sit another year or two before opening.

Deep dark blackish purple in appearance with a lush but fresh nose of rich dark blue and black fruits with a very sophisticated but careful use of oak. The palate is on the fuller end of medium-bodied, very well structured, expansive with a some residual silky tannins as expected given its young age, a touch of alcohol peeking through which isn’t too bad considering its 15.5% ABV indicated on the label. The flavor components include dark fruits such as cassis, black plum, diluted Chinese ink, mild oak with a touch of menthol and vanilla cream before giving way to a very fresh and light layer of rich earthy complexity highlighted by a delicious chalky minerality towards a moderately long finish. I really like the fresh fruity lift in this young wine. Overall, this is a really beautiful young Cabernet Sauvignon that is sure to improve with more time in a bottle. Paired nicely with a delightful country French fare for a memorable lunch experience in Yountville, Napa Valley.

Second bottle of this, much better than the first. At the pnp, significant bricking noted but classic cab nose and flavor profile....a hint of terriyaki and toffee notes on the nose and the palate. The fruit is still strong and deep and dense...best at 1-2 hours open, it falls apart a bit at hour 4 and its good points fade some. This is a very nice wine, but as noted with my two bottles 6 months apart, they are very different. This is transitioning toward its end point. I'd drink them if you have them. Not sure where this one goes as it ages.....better? Or worse?

Seemed at its best right after the pnp......seemed to go through a funky stage at 2 hours with really syrupy extracted fruit and high alcohol content then at about 4-5 hours open calmed down a bit and came together in more balance. When the fruit is good, it's really good. I feel that this wine could be even better than it's showing right now.....like maybe it COULD be a 93-94.....By late in the evening I had a nagging headache from the alcohol....or maybe it was from watching the Eagles tank against the Redskins? It's a toss up.......maybe I COULD be the next Randall Cunningham for the Eagles?

Ballentine's Fig Tree Vineyard is close to Hundred Acre's Kayli Morgan Vineyard in the northern region of the St. Helena AVA. Ballentine is all estate fruit and owns several vineyards with a lot of acres throughout Napa Valley.

7 years after bottling, the wine is clearly in its drinking window but it still has quite some time to go. 2+ hour decant and it needed it. It was okay when PnP'ed, but after the decant, it was a different and much better wine.

Saturated purple coloring with strong legs, a nice smell, and just the right amount of acidity. Red and black fruit; primarily blackberry and plum with vanilla undertones mid-palate. All of the signature St. Helena mineral components were on the back end and finish. Very smooth and really solid.

Intense nose of cherries and spice. Palate is slightly unbalanced - hints of raisins, black currant, plums and oak, but too much sugar.
Finish is quite hollow and one dimensional - again, sugar dominates this wine.
