2011 Graci Etna Arcuria

Etna DOC Nerello Mascalese more

I've never had such a concentrated dose of blackberry on the nose and palate. Almost Boone Farm like..... Fortunately after an hour of air time the fruit subsided enough for it to actually taste like Vitis Vinifera. Medium+ body, acidity, tannins; long finish (with an interesting plum and licorice taste that lingers a long time). There are some baking spice, minerality, and floral notes, but the berries dominate still. I'd advise holding off on this for another couple years to let the fruit subside some. The wine clearly has the structure to age for several years.

This Nerello is an excellent example of when the grape is done well. I have now had several entries from Etna DOC, and I would say this and one other were head and shoulders above the rest. Of course, this was also the most expensive. So, no bargain, but top wine from the region. Attack has tart fruit that smooths out in mid-palate with hints of berries. Finish is long with no harshness.

Bella sorpresa. Bevuto al ristorante "I Malavoglia" (che consiglio) a Milano.
Naso timidissimo. In bocca elegante. Costruito per essere e non per stupire. 13 gradi e non sentirli. Classe, eleganza, terroir e mineralità.
Da comprare a trovarlo.

Graci Zoom tasting. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour with garnet edge. Legs.
Nose is clean, medum intensity, with aromas of tea leaf, earth, inner spice, red fruits, leather. Developing. Holding back at the moment.
On the palate, dry, very high acidity, medium+ alcohol, medium+ but maybe actually sneakily high chewy tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of spice, white pepper, licorice, ripe red cherries, ripe strawberry, leather, slight gaminess, earthy minerally undertones. Long finish.
Very good quality. Complex but just not ready to shine yet at the moment. Needs more age. Try again in few years' time.
95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio.

What a charming wine! Deep sweet red fruits, especially strawberries and some cherry. Vibrant, steely and crispy, this is so easy to drink and begs for another sip. I would drink this now or over the next year.

Very stylish bouquet here with mint and polished wood (no new oak though). The elegant tannins speak of good viticultural practice.

great food wine. light medium body, plenty of fruit. not a characteristic etna rosso wine, not as earthy as I'd expect. More pinot like without the heavy cherries and perfumes. Had at Esca and then in Spartanburg for Christmas

Very pale, pearlescent ruby. You smell the fresh, sweet red fruits but it has a little spice and a such a lot of vibrancy. On the palette the alcohol is very powerful, but with the right food - something spicy or something rich - the delicious fruit will work well.

I really like this wine, which improved with air. Initially a raspberry jam nose - by far the biggest nose of all the Etna wines - this is also much darker, and with much more ripeness. It's also very structured with tanins, acid and minerality. With air there were signs of complex minerals, mocha and chocolate. Super decadent. More like a top Amarone than modern Barolo, but much more sweetness and here the alcohol is less prominent. I loved it - and snapped up a case immediately. Will be great with heavy game dishes. I think this will improve significantly, and will drink mine 2020-2030. 94+pts.

Note: the silica soil here prevented phylloxera from reaching these Etna vines. Due to the nature vigour, the use of low yielding vines (120yrs old) is crucial. This site has more lava fields and minerality - perhaps maximising the ripeness

Etna Rosso shows a gorgeous garnet hue with brilliant ruby highlights. Elegant and integrated aromas of dark fruit, ash, tobacco and spice are present in equal measure. Well-managed tannins. A few more years in the bottle will soften up the wine.

Complex and long; ripe and sweaty. Leans on the daringly bitter. Pervasive and exciting. Structure and flavors to age.

Same day update: tannins begin to rage with a few hours' air. Hopefully a few years will resolve this with enough fruit left.

Tremendous. Poured immediately. Very food friendly and Pinot like. You can definitely detect the volcanic influenced terroir here, but ample fruit to balance. Smooth and delightful finish. If this wine is indicative of the region, hugely underrated.

Rich and ripe on the palate with mixed berries, excellent structure but still quite soft and velvety; rich extracted feel on the palate, a bit warm, cooked fruits and a black volcanic ashy impression in the finish. Really nice, maybe 91-92.

Tasted this wine at the online Graci wine tasting organised by Luigi's Wines: Zoom session with Alberto from Graci winery.

Made with 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio. Beautiful ruby red in colour. Perfumed aromatic nose with a velvety, complex texture. Great balance coupled with layers, peeling off a layer at a time, revealing depth, mystery and delicacy.

Similar comments as the 2018 Graci Etna Rosso, this wine needs more time in the cellar before reaching its potential. Give it a few more years, and this wine should sing and dance from your glass to your palate.

The 2017 Arcuria is an easy drinking Etna Rosso with round and sweet flavors of red cherries and strawberries and light accents of leather, cinnamon, and flint. The overall sensation is fruit forward and pleasurable, but nowhere near as profound as the 2015 Arcuria I tasted last month.

At the winery with Ricardo: Big red and black fruits, wild berries, pure, pure pure, rasp., blk, cherry--fruity but with really good minerality integrated; fine silky tannins, touch of anise. Very fine Etna Rosso. 100% NM, 1-4 mo. maceration.

PnP. A lot of strange blow off aromas that quieted down after about 10-15 minutes. Fairly thick legs, so higher alcohol. Resolved into a very nice wine. Quite a bit of fruit, medium to medium+ tannin. The finish was on the hot side. Drank with dinner of moderately spiced Cuban pork, Charleston golden rice and a tossed lettuce salad. Very nice with and after dinner.
