6/3/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 91 pointsBAM! Wine feels like it has 40% alcohol (and I can't be that far off!). A huge and monumental wine, this is one of the cult CA Syrahs a la SQN, that are just massive blockbusters of wine. Certainly fun to drink (as long as you don't want anything else for the rest of the evening) this wine shows bramble, briar fruit, compote, strawberry, blackberry, pepper and a very rich palate. Did I say it is massive? Wine had been open for something like 36 hours and was still racing. A bull in a china-shop, it is very good but hard to know what to do with. |

12/11/2011 - Reptibark wrote: 90 pointsNose showed pretty and aromatic notes of stewed fruit, clove, dried prunes, dried currants and dates, which led to a palate that had surprising alive acidity and mirrored much of the nose along with a sweetness, mocha tone and chocolate covered blueberries (you know, those kind of saccharine ones you buy in the airport) with fading, papery tannins. Needs to be drunk soon, but is a nice time-capsule to Washington's past and presented for a fun experience. |

1989 Château AngélusSt. Émilion Grand Cru Red Bordeaux Blend more |
12/11/2011 - Reptibark wrote: 96 pointsStunning. Took a moment to open (in fact, when I first poured it into the decanter, it was so closed I thought it may have been flawed!) but after just 15 minutes the wine EXPLODED! The first sniff gave off gobs of soft, elegant, Merlot driven fruit notes of extra-ripe blueberry, blackberry compote, soft wood, chocolate truffles, freshly tilled topsoil, and sweet, wet cigar tobacco. Palate was juicy and opulent and copied much of the nose, though also had an extracted, juicy cherry note and still had plenty of tannin and acidity. Finished went for what felt like hours. May be nearing the peak but will probably hold there for many years. So good! I wish I had more bottles! |

2009 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru CailleretsPinot Noir more |
5/27/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 92 pointsThe wine is a baby, but already shows great bones. Sweet and subtle spice notes (clove, corriander) and gobs of ripe fruit come right out of the bottle and the fruit coaxes the palate for a round of supple palate. Plum, macerated blackberries, white pepper and a that spice note round out the palate. A shame to drink so young as I think a couple more years of sleep will greatly improve the bottle. Not my favorite of the 1er Cru Volnays from d'Angerville (that would be either Fremiets or Champan) but a great wine. |

2008 Antinori SolaiaToscana IGT SuperTuscan Blend more |
6/17/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 90 pointsYoung, so young! This was my first experience with Solaia, but this admitted rookie was underwhelmed. Big, ripe, showy and juicy, with tons of blueberry, blackberry, black currant and a very full, very silky and round body. It's very good wine, but I'll take three bottles of Guado al Tasso over one Solaia any day. |

12/11/2012 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 89 pointsJuicy and hedonistic, with obvious currant, black cherry and plum juice notes. A touch simple, with lots of primary fruit, little going on in the mid-palate and a big, full throttle finish, but an enjoyable enough wine. Might not pay my hard-earned money for it but if someone brought it along I wouldn't turn my nose up either. Someone told me that this is made by the KJ people (?) if so, who knew they could do it? |

12/9/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 92 pointsServed this blind to a friend who soon after tasting guessed that it was a Portuguese red, a pretty fair assumption in my opinion as it showed extracted fruit, soft tannins and very round, plush fruit. Tons of delicate blue and black fruits, wood and more. Lovely and while I would recommend drinking it sooner rather than later, it's a wonderful treat now. 1 person found this helpful, do you? 1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-PapeRed Rhone Blend more |
1/6/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 pointsShowing tons of black and red licorice, plum juice and full extraction, this felt like it was made in a more progressive style- though can't say I have a ton of experience with '99 CdPs. The palate is sweet with tons of ripe fruit, clove, cumin, cooked berries and brown sugar. A couple people thought it was WOTN. Even though the tannins were still present, they were beginning to soften and I would think about drinking with a couple of years. |

12/17/2011 - Reptibark wrote: 93 pointsA very ebullient nose right out of the bottle, this wine was drunk after a crazy, long day with grilled cheese and was the perfect end. Didn't bother decanting as the wine is young and I used proper glassware for plenty of swirling, the nose if tart cherry, dried cranberry, on-the-vine raspberry and strawberry. Not as much non-fruit aromas as I expected but still a lot going on. Palate is lush and full figured with plenty of fruit and a finish that lingers for a good length. Very, very good! |

2007 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private ReserveNapa Valley more |
12/11/2011 - Reptibark wrote: 89 pointsNot as big a fan of this as many were, I thought it was a typical Napa Cab and showed somewhat one dimensional notes of black fruit and tannins with a big, hulking frame and a quick finish. Admittedly, the sweet fruit and expensive oak flavors were nice tidbits and I can acknowledge that this is an expensive wine, it just didn't rattle my bells. May show like this for a couple of years, though I'm not convinced that it will improve with much time in the cellar. I've had better for less. |

12/11/2011 - Reptibark wrote: 91 pointsI must admit, despite not wanting to like this, it's actually pretty good and I think is way better than the '07 Georges de Latour. Unlike many big, Californian Cabs, I found this one to have nice integration between the obvious oak tones and the soft, pleasant notes of black and red fruits and tannins. Many wines made in this style feel unbalanced to me; not this one. The nose is clean with those plum, currant, blackberry and blueberry notes I look for and the palate is rich, opulent, ripe and juicy, with macerated stone fruits, mint, minerals and a long, caressing finish. Nice job. 3 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

1997 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private ReserveNapa Valley more |
6/3/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 89 pointsShowing it's age, this wine may have been a touch past peak, but the guy who brought it paid $20 a bottle, so who cares?! The nose immediately hit me as Ben & Jerry's Oatmeal Raisin ice cream (which was hard to shake to find more) though there are notes of cedar wood, dark fruit and herbs. Bottle may have been a touch oxidized as the cooked fruit notes were present but all in all it was drinking very well. |

1986 Bertani Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Superiore AmaroneCorvina Blend, Corvina more |
6/3/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 92 pointsIt seemed to me that most people liked the '73 better (though it could be one of those instances where everyone automatically likes the older wine better) but I thought this was more unique and interesting. While the fruit was certainly there with signature notes of prune, fig and cherry, it was the non-fruit notes that really caught my eye; notes of thyme, wet herbs, dill, mint, djarum cigarettes, truffles, mushroom and wet leaves. The palate is medium bodied and much of the tannin has dissolved so, while the wine does seem to lack a touch of structure, it is still holding strong, though I would drink now. |

1973 Bertani Recioto della Valpolicella Classico Superiore AmaroneCorvina Blend, Corvina more |
6/3/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 92 pointsPleasantly surprised at this (though, seeing as it was my first experience with a '73 Amarone, I don't know how fair that is) but the wine was certainly sound, if not showing it's age. The nose had notes of raisin, clove smoke, sweet dried prune and dried cherries, while the medium bodied palate showed pleasant sweetness, soft tannins, more of that dried prune as well as fig, baked plums and a soft mint note. Tasted in a lineup of some impressive wines, it was not my WOTN but definitely a cool bottle. Drink now. |

2003 Jean-Claude Boisset Clos VougeotClos Vougeot Grand Cru Pinot Noir more |
2/3/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 pointsLovely. Elegant. Delicate. Opens up immediately with black fruit- plums, currants, blackberry and fig. Has non-fruit flavors of anise, black Twizzler and funky barn. Very tannic but certainly showing well today. Had it at a restaurant and wish I had some in the cellar. |

11/22/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 88 pointsGood, not great CA Syrah. Admittedly, the wasn't blind and I have a slight bias against Randall, but the wine showed a touch of earthy, game, round dark fruit, a touch of bacon-like cooked meat and mild tannins. A fine wine for Tuesday. |

2011 Bosquet des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles VignesRed Rhone Blend more |
2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 pointsThis wine reminds me of Chinese food, with the sweet/spicy notes of duck fat, grease, fresh and dried herbs and a long finish. It is full bodied and deep, with lots of character. I've never had Chante le Merle before but I am now looking forward to trying other vintages. |

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 pointsVery round and very ripe with plenty of upfront fruit and a dark, full bodied mid-palate (my guess is because of the Mouvedre). Plenty of heat and red pepper on the tip of the tongue and following into the finish, this is a spicy style CdP. |

2/19/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 90 pointsI thought this was excellent CdR and possesses great value for me. Very lovely wine with fresh lavender, soft fruit and an easy demeanor about it. The finish is long and the mouthfeel is round and caressing. |

11/22/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 88 pointsThe wasn't half bad! I'm typing this from my notes long after taking them (like, weeks) but I remember being pretty surprised by the quality of this wine. A bit simple but showed pleasant cherry, clove and basic kitchen spices along with medium tannins that coated the palate. Perfectly good, if not great, Burgundy. |

1999 Bressan Cru PignolVenezia Giulia IGT Pignolo more |
12/11/2012 - Reptibark wrote: 92 pointsGot to say; I don't have a lot of experience with Pignol (only had it twice, both times by Bressan). That being said, I would definitely like to know more about it. The nose is loaded with white pepper, ripening cherries, dried herbs and star anise. Palate is medium bodied with lots of fruit that opens as the wine stretches its legs. I think this has a good amount of life left in it as well, as tannins and acid still taste youthful and vibrant. |

1/8/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 92 pointsFantastically interesting wine. I've had the Bressan wines on numerous occasions and always find them to be a treat to drink. A very heavily spiced wine, with dried garden spices, black pepper, bitter citrus peel, menthol and a touch of light fruit. Medium bodied and gorgeous, this is the only Schioppetino that I've had (excepting past vintages of this wine) though I would be very interested in trying other producers. |

2/17/2013 - Reptibark Likes this wine: 91 pointsVery good Amarone though the 17 percent alcohol is quite noticeable both on the nose and on the palate. Hot spices, roasted lamb, heat, char and very dark fruit notes. A young wine, this is much, much better on day two (won't have any left but bet it would be even better on day three...) I'll be watching this one... |

2009 Cantine DEI Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Villa MartienaSangiovese more |
2/3/2013 - Reptibark Does not like this wine: 85 pointsI don't see any QPR here. Generic tasting Vino Nobile with slight flavors of sandalwood, earth, burnt soil, and hot rocks. You have to dig for the cherry and raspberry flavors and the tannins and mild with a short finish. |
