2000 Domaine A Cabernet Sauvignon

Coal River more

12/20/2016 - ProfByron wrote: 90 points

I like herbaceous cabernet but this is pretty aggressive. It's not simple and green though, there is depth to it, and obvious ripe tannin on the finish.

Best left a few years more, even though it's already 16 years old.

13.5%ABV, sealed with cork.

2012 Adams Wein St. Laurent Kaliber 16

Rheinhessen more

7/1/2018 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 87 points

Very attractive smokey character on the nose.

Fresh acidity, that smokey character, a touch of green, tobacco, and a fruit character that I'm not familiar with. It's a pity it lacks concentration, even for the medium weight wine that it is, but given the price that's to be expected.

2018 Adelina Shiraz Mataro

Clare Valley Red Rhone Blend more

6/26/2022 - ProfByron wrote: 88 points

Beautiful label. Noticeably medium bodied for Clare. Youthful, grippy tannins but not at all a thick wine texturally

It’s a bit of a potpourri, ripe and green together. Mataro isn’t a grape I like, and it dominates I feel.

Possibly will improve as the fruit sweetness dies down. Though many will prefer it now.

2007 Alkoomi Shiraz Jarrah

Frankland River more

1/28/2024 - ProfByron Likes this wine: 89 points

Medium bodied, sweet fruit, good with green Thai curry.

I wonder how long this wine could last, it doesn’t have much tannin or texture, but the fruit sweetness suggests it could go awhile. But will it ever develop aged complexity. I have my doubts. It’s, if anything, becoming more simple.

Very good. Slight struck match on nose.

Aged, spicy, savoury shiraz. Complex, not simple blackberry.

Restrained oak and low alcohol. Sophisticated yet still hearty and satisfying. Great with burgers !

Intense cassis, boysenberry. Fruit dominant. Not sure why previous reviews were so negative. Perhaps this needed a bit of time to settle down.

Pretty nose. Well judged oak.

Slightly herbal, cab franc shows. A bit stringy.

The balance is nice. The stated intention is “old world red blend” and it’s potentially a good Bordeaux style. Left Bank, at least at the moment.

Long road ahead.

2013 Alpha Box & Dice Golden Mullet Fury

McLaren Vale White Blend more

12/31/2015 - ProfByron Does not like this wine: 81 points

Golden cloudy colour. Looks more like cider than wine.

Much of the acidity is volatile. There is a fair degree of oxidation. Needless to say some will find this wine confronting. Some will simply hate it. Others will find it interesting.

This (vintage) is an Semillon/Arneis/Viognier blend, although the varieties matter little, as this wine is all about winemaking (lots of skin contact), not varietal flavour or terroir. It's an interesting wine, at least at first, though not very enjoyable. In the end I find these sorts of wines boring because they gain nothing from cellaring, and there is nothing to learn about region, vineyard, vintage, it's all about the pretentious winemaking.

Drink now (or yesterday). 13% ABV

I agree with my previous note. Fresh yet there is a pleasant oiliness Very good wine.

The grape variety is Verdejo which has been likened to Sauvignon Blanc. I think that’s misleading.

Reinforcing my previous note this is 1st class Southern Rhone. The tannin is starting to ease, showcasing the concentrated fruit. Herbal, liquorice, touch of (Northern Rhone) geranium.

Very good. Great value.

Aromas of thyme and/or rosemary. Rather tannic, a bit closed as the 2018 was at this age but it blossomed after a year in bottle.

So I expect points to go higher. Superb value.

Hard to pick as a cabernet shiraz. Flinty aromas distract from the fruit, though they are attractive (and signal Sth Africa). The palate is quite lovely, well balanced, fresh but it has depth.

Drink over the next 5 years, maybe a fair deal longer?
