2022 A. Rodda Chardonnay Baxendale

Whitlands more

1/28/2024 - richard.presser Likes this wine: 90 points

Nose of grapefruit and white flowers. Ditto palate, including the grapefruit acid. Some flintiness, hint of lees? Drinkable now as it breathes but I would love to see it in a decade. More reserved than his Beechworth or Yarra wines. Impeccably made.

Showed much better than the previous sample. Lovely richness on the nose and palate. Should develop very well.

A pleasant but undeveloped nose. Very little fruit expressed on the palate and quite high acid. I found it out of balance. Age will help but I think it will always be lean.

Complex, lifted, wonderfully structured Chard.
Palate fleshes this out with surprising power, richness and length. Will be spectacular with age. Shows the quality of 2021, the vineyard and Adrian.

Pale colour.
Fine, restrained, youthful, quite undeveloped.
Lemon/lime flavours. Lifted aromatics of Willowlake vineyard.
A baby. Well made but needs a chunk of time.

3/10/2022 - richard.presser Does not like this wine: 85 points

Overripe, bottle devt has given it a stewed plums aroma and flavour.
The oak on the palate is still very evident.
A hamfisted wine. Quite poor. About as good as it will get, which is a sad observation.

Similar to its brethren in this 2 x 3-pack - plummy fruit. On opening and vigorous decanting, showed very light fruit and was dominated by its acid, even with flavorsome lamb roast. After 10 hours, the fruit showed better and the wine was more balanced. Better in 3-4 years.

Fine floral nose with the tarry backdrop.
Sweet, round, perfumed palate. Acid and tannin are in good balance. Tannins are very fine. Approachable now but will develop.

2019 Altera Terra Corda Murrumbateman

Canberra District Shiraz Blend, Syrah more

4/12/2021 - richard.presser wrote: NR

The nose is dominated by Canberra area character i have never liked. I thought Doug Neil may transcend this but this wine suggests not. It's an austere "stewed red plums" character, which may arise from the summer heat and may be a soil factor. It dominates both the nose and palate. The palate lacks real fruit characters. I expected the pinot in the blend to make it approachable out of the gate. Not even close. Will it improve? I doubt it but I'll give it time.3 others to watch...

Like the Corda (drunk yesterday), it has the overripe stewed plums/tea tannin characters that I associate with the Canberra region (too many politicians nearby?). It took a punt on Doug Neal. I think he mad an error.
Nose is dominated by these characters. Ditto the palate. Very disappointed. Will it improve???

2016 Germano Angelo Barolo Riserva Bussia

Nebbiolo more

8/19/2022 - richard.presser Likes this wine: 93 points

Drank for lunch in Barolo.
Fine perfumed nose. Rose petals gets it.
Some richness, showing both tannin and acid but much more balanced and approachable than I expected, given it’s a 2016 Riserva. Yes, it will be much better in a decade but it displays the balance from young that all great wines do.
Caveat: I am a neophyte in the world of Barolo.
I suspect the great wines show more power than this. I appreciate being able to try it.

Wonderful flavour, length and even richness for such a lowly wine. Beautifully made. Drinking wonderfully now and for perhaps 3-4 years. No point in keeping it longer.

Beautifully fine on nose and palate. Shockingly good. From a François Frère barrel that was rejected from the main blend and left to itself, with no expectation. The ugly duckling turned into an unexpected swan.

Very slight deposit.
Vital medium red.
Spicy, fine, complex. Ripe red cherry.
Wonderful spicy savoury red cherry, slight iodine character that tightens it up. A wonderful balanced wine. Shows the quality of the vintage.
Can be aged but why bother?

More elegant than my experience of those from Sicily. Old vines that are cared for. Raspberry and red cherry fruited on the nose and an almost jube-like intensity of raspberry flavour. You don't expect it. Good length and overall structure. Drinkable now but with the structure to age.

Deep red. Clean black cherry aromas. Fine. Perfumed.
Ditto palate. Acid dictates the game. Not in an unbalanced way, but it absolutely shapes the wine, along with black cherries and a deceptive lightness on its feet. Clearly a variety that handles warmer climates with aplomb. Coming from Sicily, it’s no surprise. Its flavour structure suggests a much cooler clime. An easy food wine. A variety to explore.

A new experience for me. Adam Clay (winemaker) said its origins are in Georgia.
Many characteristics similar to Shiraz, though with more savoury complexity and elegance. Again, this is off mature vines. Good length and balance. Can be approached young but time will treat it well.

9/4/2023 - richard.presser Likes this wine: 93 points

VO vines off the home vineyard - a supplier to Penfolds from this esteemed Moppa location. And it shows in the wine. Powerful old vine Shiraz with the sparkle of 2021 and with elegance from picking on the earlier side. Perhaps his only wine that sees any new oak. More "authoritative" than Adam's other wines, which are all beautifully made. Needs a decade to begin to truly show itself.

15.6% alcohol!!! High even for Heathcote.
Clearly Heathcote, surprising acid (added?) for such a ripe, alcoholic wine. Was dropping tartaric acid ppt already.
Interesting to try, but too alcoholic, overblown yet acid...
Not one to buy
