2009 Kirkland Signature Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Countymore |
11/17/2011 - dayoff53 Likes this wine: 89 pointsI opened a bottle of this wine and immediately splashed it into a glass. The first thing I noticed was the inky, almost black color, followed by the dark fruit blast in my nose. The CellarTracker scores I had seen left me with low expectations for this wine, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I found it a rich, succulent cab that hit all the right notes of ripe dark fruit, spice, and chocolate, with hints of eucalyptus and anise. It is full-bodied and has good tannins resulting in a nice, long finish. |

5/13/2011 - dayoff53 Likes this wine: 87 pointsI'm going to have to take issue with the 77 point score give this wine by markIn50266. While this is not a classic cabernet for the ages, it is a pretty good wine and an outstanding value at $9 per bottle. |

2006 Days Delight Cabernet Sauvignon Woodbridge Lodi Ranch 11more |
2/10/2010 - dayoff53 wrote: 79 pointsThe very last bottle of this wine did not have the "off" notes I smelled and tasted in the previous bottle. It was fruity - mostly dark fruits, but also some pie cherry - and fairly tart, but with very mild tannins. Enjoyable enough for drinking while reading a book; not so great for a heavy meal. |

12/29/2009 - dayoff53 wrote: 76 pointsThis is one of my last bottles of this home-made kit wine (the first I actually made at my home). The color of this wine is very dark purple/red. It smells primarily fruity, but also has a little "off" smell that dissipates some with decanting. It tastes primarily of dark fruit - dark cherries, currants - and has some decent soft tannins, but also has a bit of an "off" flavor that lingers. It is not to the point I would call it flawed, but it is less than fully pleasing to the nose and tongue. |

2/14/2010 - dayoff53 wrote: 82 pointsThis is a wine I made from a Cellar Craft kit. It was bottled on January 19, 2009. While it is clearly not an exceptional wine, I have been very pleased with the quality of this wine for the cost. My total cost, including labels, corks, toppers, etc. (but without prorating the cost of equipment) was $3.69 per bottle. |

2007 Brothers-In-Law Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma Valleymore |
12/25/2009 - dayoff53 wrote: 80 pointsMy brother-in-law, Bill, included this wine among a group of 8 Sonoma reds at a completely blind tasting by 9 family members. The other wines ranged in cost from $15 to $50 per bottle. This wine came in first over-all. I was quite proud. Having said that, in my own tasting at this event, I scored this wine the lowest. There were 3 regular wine-drinkers (including myself), and all scored this wine in the bottom half. Among the 6 who don't drink so much wine, 5 rated this wine number one. That is because it is a fruity, mild-mannered, non-aggressive wine. My comments, no knowing it was a wine I had made (or even that any of my wines were being tasted) was that this would be a wine to drink while reading a book, but it wouldn't hold up to food very well. |

The taste was not as bad as the smell, but still distinctly "off" and unpleasant. I left it for a couple days, hoping the odor would dissipate, but it did not. I dumped that bottle out and tried another bottle that was identical. Unfortunately, it is clear that something went wrong with this batch of wine and I threw it all away. |

2007 Days Delight Amarone della Valpolicella Italian AmaroneCorvina Blend, Corvina more |
1/22/2010 - dayoff53 wrote: 79 pointsThis wine is not much like a good amarone, but it is pleasantly fruity in taste and very easy-drinking. It doesn't have the structure to hold up to much of a meal, but can be enjoyed by itself or with a light snack. I had hoped it would have better tannins than it has. While it is a drinkable wine, there is no reason to believe it will improve with age and I will revise the drinking window to indicate it should be consumed by 2011. |

2007 Doña Paula Malbec Rosé Los CardosLujan de Cuyo more |
3/18/2010 - dayoff53 Likes this wine: 88 pointsOn pop-and-pour, this wine is sparkling clear and bright with a light garnet or raspberry color. It has a pleasant berry nose - raspberry, strawberry and cranberry - with a hint of pink grapefruit. On tasting, I get strawberry first, followed by raspberry and a hint of fig. It has enough acidity to be crisp and refreshing without being tart. It is fully dry, but with enough fruit to give a sweet sensation. The body is light and the texture is bright and fun. For a rosé, it has a pleasant finish with a bit of citrus rind coming through at the end. I find this wine to be a very pleasant easy-drinking wine and give it a rating of 88 out of 100. |

12/14/2009 - dayoff53 wrote: 86 pointsVery dark color. Nose of black cherries. On the palate, lots of black fruit - cherry, plums; perhaps a little leather and a bit of cigar tobacco. Moderate tannins, a little oaky. Well-balanced and enjoyable. Well worth the $11.65 I paid (with tax) seven months ago. |

1/12/2010 - dayoff53 wrote: 86 pointsThis wine seemed "closed" to me - both the bouquet and the taste were initially muted and the tannins, while not overly strong, were definitely tight. It opened up over time and was quite a lot nicer an hour or so after decanting. At that point, it had a distinct nose of dark fruit - black cherry and plum - with distinct mineral notes and a bit of smokiness. The taste echoed the bouquet and it had a pleasant mouth feel. I would presently rate this about an 86, but think it will improve over the next few years. I'll leave it in the cellar for at least a year before I open another bottle. |

I aerated it and decanted it into a nice decanter about 1 1/2 hours before serving. It had a rich red color and a pleasant, if not particularly strong, nose after decanting. The taste was pretty much as I remembered it from my last (Woot) bottle, though my perception was that it was a little more complex with nicely developed tannins. I still think this is a pretty decent wine and I still think it will improve with a couple more years of age. My score (86) remains the same. |

NV Martini Asti SpumanteMoscato Blanco, Muscat more |
3/13/2010 - dayoff53 Likes this wine: 85 pointsThis bottle had been in my cellar for about three years and I had not tasted it since I have begun developing my wine palate. I took it to a friend's retirement party, where it was very well received - it disappeared a lot faster than the extra dry sparkly I also took. This was sweeter than I remembered it - and that is certainly due to my greater experience with dry wines in the years since I last tried it. Nonetheless, I found the Asti very tasty - citrus and peach on the tongue with a very pleasant tingle. Not a particularly complex wine - certainly not pretentious - but a good, fun wine for parties, and at a great price. |

12/18/2009 - dayoff53 wrote: 94 pointsA friend brought this to our annual Christmas dinner at a nice local Italian Ristorante. We had no idea what we had until we had the waiter open it and decant it for us. The nose was heavenly - deep, rich and intriguing. The color was deep and dark, tending toward brick at the edge. It was medium-bodied, but with a very full flavor - spicy and earthy up front, with a lingering finish that turned more fruity at the end. Five of us drank it (and a few other bottles of wine over a 3-hour lunch) and universally found it outstanding. We gave a small glass to the waiter and wine steward, who were also suitably impressed. Absolutely delightful! |

12/25/2009 - dayoff53 wrote: 90 pointsPaid $42 for this at a very nice restaurant in Boise at Christmas dinner. I had it with roast loin of lamb with spinach, polenta and red wine reduction. My daughter had it with roast duck. The color was a light ruby red and it was sparkling clear. It was fruity and light on the nose and palate - went very well with both meals. A very nice wine - but, Lord! I hate to pay restaurant prices for wine. I would gladly pay $20 or thereabouts to have a couple bottles in my cellar. |

2/18/2010 - dayoff53 wrote: 80 pointsThis wine was poured immediately after opening. It was bright and clear (1.5) and had a nice ruby color appropriate for the variety (). There was quite a distinctive nose with notable leather and hints of mushroom, along with the expected raspberry and cherry smells (3). The acid balance was good (2) but there was a hint more sweetness than I would find ideal (.5). The body and mouth feel were good (2). The flavor was good, but a bit more fruity than I would prefer, though this makes it a very easy-drinking wine (1.5). There is no discernible bitterness (1) but the tannins could be firmer (.5). This wine has overall taste characteristics appropriate for a Pinot Noir (2). I score it 15 on the UC Davis scale, 80 points on a 100-point scale. (Note: edited and score reduced slightly after second glass.) |

1/8/2010 - dayoff53 wrote: 78 pointsOn January 7, 2010, this wine was pleasant and easy-drinking, if not particularly remarkable. The wine was clear, though not sparkling (1.5), and a deep color for a Pinot (2). The bouquet was somewhat simple, but fruity - I noted raspberry and cherry notes - and very slightly yeasty (2.5). The acidity was nice for casual drinking, but perhaps slightly low (1.5). It was perhaps slightly sweet for a good Pinot (.5). The body was very nice and it pleasantly coated the mouth (2). The flavors of raspberry and canning cherry were predominant and appropriate to the variety, but somewhat subdued (1.5). There was no perceptible bitterness (1). Tannins were smooth and soft, but somewhat low (.5). Overall, I found this to be an acceptable Pinot Noir, but nothing special (2). I score it a total 0f 15 points on the UC Davis scale. Call it 78 on the Robert Parker scale. This is a substantially higher score than I gave it last spring when comparing it to the Kent Rasmussen Carneros Estate Pinot Noir, but I think the present score is fair. Either the wine has improved or I have changed my opinion... |

12/20/2009 - dayoff53 wrote: 78 pointsNothing particularly interesting about this wine. Served this at a birthday party dinner along with a 2006 Kent Rasmussen Pinot Noir and at 2006 Stephen Vincent Pinot Noir. This one didn't hold a candle to the others. At the end of the evening, both the other bottles were empty and 2/3 of this one was left over. Not much of a nose - what there was was vaguely red berries and dust. The flavors were not intense, nor the finish long. It is not a bad wine, just not a particularly good wine and certainly not a memorable one. |
