Refrigerated for a couple hours on the day the truck dropped it off, then opened and immediately served with fried chicken and boiled potatoes with cream gravy.
Appearance - brilliant, free of any dullness, murkiness, cloudiness or sediment. 2 points.
Color very pleasing light yellow color. 1 point.
Aroma and bouquet - medium-intensity nose of citrus (white grapefruit) and pineapple. Lesser notes of apricot and pear. Light and crisp smell. Very pleasing. 4 points.
Volatile acidity - no vinegary or unpleasant acidic smells of any sort. 1 point.
Total acidity - crisp, bright acidity enhances the essence of grapefruit and pineapple. Not in any way sharp or unpleasant, but the acid is clearly apparent. 1 point.
Sweetness - this wine is fully dry with no detectable sweetness. What residual sugar there is perfectly balances the acidity to make a well-balanced crisp white wine. 1 point.
Body/Texture - Feels nice in the mouth. Definitely not "thin", despite its 13.7% alcohol content, but neither is it viscous like a desert wine. 2 points.
Taste/Flavor - The same citrus, pineapple apricot and pear as in the nose. No "off" or distracting notes of any sort. No yeastiness or chemical notes. The flavor is appropriate to my understanding of the Albarino grape and is good to drink alone but definitely holds up to food 2 points.
Bitterness/Astringency - Of course, this is not a tannic wine. There is a very slight and appropriate bitterness that helps evoke the grapefruit. 2 points.
General quality - this is a damn fine white wine. Probably not a classic, but I'm glad I bought it and I'll be sorry when it's gone. 3 points.

19 points on the UC Davis 20-point scale. I'm going with a 91 on a 100-point scale.

I opened a bottle of this wine and immediately splashed it into a glass. The first thing I noticed was the inky, almost black color, followed by the dark fruit blast in my nose. The CellarTracker scores I had seen left me with low expectations for this wine, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I found it a rich, succulent cab that hit all the right notes of ripe dark fruit, spice, and chocolate, with hints of eucalyptus and anise. It is full-bodied and has good tannins resulting in a nice, long finish.
Appearance: It is too dark to be called brilliant, but is a beautiful, rich color that won't allow me to score it less than 2.
Color: Deep purple-red, so dark it looks black in dinner lighting - a solid 2.
Aroma and Bouquet: Intense dark fruit with spice, chocolate and hints of anise and eucalyptus - slight herbal notes, but no detectable green pepper; 3.5 points.
Volatile Acidity: None - 2.
Total Acidity: There is little acidity to this wine, and little is wanted - 1.5.
Sweetness/sugar: This wine is fully dry, but the fruitiness gives a sensation of a hint of sweet; very nice - 1.
Body: Full-bodied and luscious in the mouth, despite the 14.3% alcohol - 1.
Flavor: The flavor echoes the nose and is luscious and full; fruity in that California way that is lovely but leaves me wanting just a little more complexity - 1.5.
Astringency: The tannins are perhaps a little rough and I think another year in the bottle will tame it so that it suits the mainstream tastes a bit more, but I like it - 1.5.
General Quality: For me, this is a top notch wine, especially at this price point. I would gladly accept this at $45 in a restaurant and would pay $20 or $25 in a grocery store - 1.5.
That makes it 17.5 points on my U.C. Davis calculation. I give it 89 points on a 100-point scale (though I'm tempted to give it a 98 to counter the lame, unsupported 75 someone gave it).

I'm going to have to take issue with the 77 point score give this wine by markIn50266. While this is not a classic cabernet for the ages, it is a pretty good wine and an outstanding value at $9 per bottle.
I opened this bottle about 45 minutes before it was served and poured it straight out of the bottle. We had several friends over for burgers and this was the wine I opened. I didn't really give much thought to what I was drinking at the time - I was just enjoying the evening, the food and the company. Afterward, though, I thought, "that wine was pretty darn good with the burgers." It was a nice pairing that enhanced the entire experience. Now, I am sitting with a bottle in front of me (and NOT a frontal lobotomy) and thinking about what I am drinking. Here are my more detailed thoughts.
This wine is clear but not brilliant (1) and is a deep ruby color (2). It has a nice, full nose, redolent of red cherry, plums and blackberries, as well as spices and vanilla - the petit verdot and syrah really help round out the bouquet (4). There is no noticeable inappropriate volatile acidity (2) and the overall acidity is appropriate for the variety - round and full, with no sharpness (2). The wine is distinctly fruity in the modern California style, but not at all sweet (1). It is medium-full bodied and, at 13.6%, not overly alcoholic, giving it a good mouth feel (1). The flavor is consistent with the nose and quite fruity - a little too much so for my taste, but very nice with the burgers and appealing to less experienced tastes (1.5). This wine has a nice, round astringency but a relatively short finish (1.5). I think the overall quality is quite good buy not excellent (1.5). On a UC Davis 20 point scale, I would rate it 17.5. On a 100 point scale, I give it an 87.
Definitely worth the price, and then some!

The very last bottle of this wine did not have the "off" notes I smelled and tasted in the previous bottle. It was fruity - mostly dark fruits, but also some pie cherry - and fairly tart, but with very mild tannins. Enjoyable enough for drinking while reading a book; not so great for a heavy meal.

This is one of my last bottles of this home-made kit wine (the first I actually made at my home). The color of this wine is very dark purple/red. It smells primarily fruity, but also has a little "off" smell that dissipates some with decanting. It tastes primarily of dark fruit - dark cherries, currants - and has some decent soft tannins, but also has a bit of an "off" flavor that lingers. It is not to the point I would call it flawed, but it is less than fully pleasing to the nose and tongue.

I was a bit leery of this H by Havens wine, especially as the winery is now defunct and this wine was bottled under the new management and has no history. I was more than pleasantly surprised.
The wine was bright and clear (1.5) and the color was a deep, dark, rich purple (2). On the nose, I get black currants, some black cherry and plum, a little tobacco and some blackberry, along with a bit of spice - a very nice bouquet (3). In the mouth, this is a fruit-forward California Cabernet, but a very nice one. The acid and sugar are well-balanced (2). The body is heavy and very pleasant (2). The flavor is very good, but a little too simple to get top marks - black fruit are predominate, but the tobacco and spice definitely come through (1.5). There is no undesirable bitterness or off flavor (1) and the tannins are soft and round, with a nice, long finish (1). Overall, this wine is very good, but not truly outstanding - a good, charming, versatile wine (3). My overall score (20 point scale) is 17. On a 100 point scale, I give it an 89 - just short of outstanding. It is ready to drink now and I think an appropriate drinking window is through 2012 - though it may hold up longer.

This is a wine I made from a Cellar Craft kit. It was bottled on January 19, 2009. While it is clearly not an exceptional wine, I have been very pleased with the quality of this wine for the cost. My total cost, including labels, corks, toppers, etc. (but without prorating the cost of equipment) was $3.69 per bottle.
It has a very nice dark red color, but the nose is not strong - what there is smells of dark fruit, tobacco and perhaps a little chocolate. It has enough tannins to be pleasant and a nice overall mouth feel. The flavors, like the nose, are not strong, but are of black cherries, black currants, chocolate and tobacco. Of the wines I have made, it is one of the best and I score it 82 points.

My brother-in-law, Bill, included this wine among a group of 8 Sonoma reds at a completely blind tasting by 9 family members. The other wines ranged in cost from $15 to $50 per bottle. This wine came in first over-all. I was quite proud. Having said that, in my own tasting at this event, I scored this wine the lowest. There were 3 regular wine-drinkers (including myself), and all scored this wine in the bottom half. Among the 6 who don't drink so much wine, 5 rated this wine number one. That is because it is a fruity, mild-mannered, non-aggressive wine. My comments, no knowing it was a wine I had made (or even that any of my wines were being tasted) was that this would be a wine to drink while reading a book, but it wouldn't hold up to food very well.

I tasted a bottle of this on 1/18/10 and found it quite bad. It had a distinctly "off" smell that was a little musty with a tang of some petroleum product. The taste was not as bad as the smell, but still distinctly "off" and unpleasant. I left it for a couple days, hoping the odor would dissipate, but it did not. I dumped that bottle out and tried another bottle that was identical. Unfortunately, it is clear that something went wrong with this batch of wine and I threw it all away.

This wine is not much like a good amarone, but it is pleasantly fruity in taste and very easy-drinking. It doesn't have the structure to hold up to much of a meal, but can be enjoyed by itself or with a light snack. I had hoped it would have better tannins than it has. While it is a drinkable wine, there is no reason to believe it will improve with age and I will revise the drinking window to indicate it should be consumed by 2011.

On pop-and-pour, this wine is sparkling clear and bright with a light garnet or raspberry color. It has a pleasant berry nose - raspberry, strawberry and cranberry - with a hint of pink grapefruit. On tasting, I get strawberry first, followed by raspberry and a hint of fig. It has enough acidity to be crisp and refreshing without being tart. It is fully dry, but with enough fruit to give a sweet sensation. The body is light and the texture is bright and fun. For a rosé, it has a pleasant finish with a bit of citrus rind coming through at the end. I find this wine to be a very pleasant easy-drinking wine and give it a rating of 88 out of 100.

Let it rest in the cellar for a few hours on the day it was delivered, then couldn't resist popping the cork on one. I tasted it with a nice macaroni and cheese - rather sharp cheddar.
Clarity/appearance: the wine is bright and clear with no hint of haziness. 1.5.
Color: a beautiful dark garnet with a hint of purple. 1
Aroma/bouquet: the aroma is somewhat fruity, with a distinct smell of black cherries and, dare I say it?, grape as well as a little plum. There is a spiciness that reminds me of allspice and mace. I may be influenced by the wine.woot blog, but chocolate and tea also come through. Very nice. 3
Total acidity: this wine is nicely balanced, with the acidity setting off the fruitiness very well. 2
Sweetness: this wine is appropriately dry, though the fruitiness lends and impression of a hint of sweet. Overall, very appropriate for a nice Merlot. 1
Body/texture: this is a full-bodied red table wine and is appropriate to the varietal. 2
Taste/flavor: very nice. The cherries and plums come through, but so do dark spices and chocolate. A full, round, satisfying taste. 2
Bitterness: there is no inappropriate bitterness or other off flavors. 1
Finish/astringency: this wine has a moderately long finish with substantial tannic astringency that is, again, appropriate for a good merlot. 1
General quality: a fine, charming merlot that drinks well by itself and stands up well to strong-flavored food. Not the best I've had, but one I would not hesitate to recommend. 3
Total score: 17.5/20 on UC Davis scare. 90/100. Excellent wine.

Using the GrapeStories Tasting Note Assistant, I got the following:
The wine looks Garnet colored.
The legs are Slow.
It smells like Plum, Cherry, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Tea, Chocolate, and Black currant (cassis).
It tastes like Black currant (cassis), Plum, Cherry, Black Pepper, Nutmeg, Tea, Tobacco, and Chocolate.
The body is Medium/Full.
The wine is textured Round.
The wine finishes Medium.

This wine seemed "closed" to me - both the bouquet and the taste were initially muted and the tannins, while not overly strong, were definitely tight. It opened up over time and was quite a lot nicer an hour or so after decanting. At that point, it had a distinct nose of dark fruit - black cherry and plum - with distinct mineral notes and a bit of smokiness. The taste echoed the bouquet and it had a pleasant mouth feel. I would presently rate this about an 86, but think it will improve over the next few years. I'll leave it in the cellar for at least a year before I open another bottle.

I received a case of this from K&L today and was having a group of friends over for "movie night", so decided to pop the cork on a new bottle. I aerated it and decanted it into a nice decanter about 1 1/2 hours before serving. It had a rich red color and a pleasant, if not particularly strong, nose after decanting. The taste was pretty much as I remembered it from my last (Woot) bottle, though my perception was that it was a little more complex with nicely developed tannins. I still think this is a pretty decent wine and I still think it will improve with a couple more years of age. My score (86) remains the same.

I opened this for casual consumption while sitting at the computer and watching TV. These are my first impressions on pop-and-pour.
The wine was bright and clear in the glass and had a beautiful deep, rich color (2). I found the nose also very rich - primarily dark fruit, but some spiciness and earthiness that made it more interesting. This may be the second Montepulciano d'Abruzzo I have ever tasted, and the first I have tasted critically, so I'm not sure what I SHOULD be noting, but what I smell, I like (4). The acidity was nice - sufficient to hold up to a meal; not at all too tart (2). While fruity, the wine was definitely dry - no inappropriate sweetness (1). The body was medium to full and very pleasant in the mouth (2). I got fruitiness, but also something darker and earthy in the taste - an interesting complexity (2), plus a bit of nice kirsch bitterness - nothing overwhelming (1). There were pleasant, soft tannins and a moderately long finish (1). On the whole, I found this wine surprisingly good. I rate the overall quality 3.5, giving it an 18.5 on the UC Davis 20-point scale. I give it a 91 on a 100-point scale, which is significantly better than I anticipated.

This bottle had been in my cellar for about three years and I had not tasted it since I have begun developing my wine palate. I took it to a friend's retirement party, where it was very well received - it disappeared a lot faster than the extra dry sparkly I also took. This was sweeter than I remembered it - and that is certainly due to my greater experience with dry wines in the years since I last tried it. Nonetheless, I found the Asti very tasty - citrus and peach on the tongue with a very pleasant tingle. Not a particularly complex wine - certainly not pretentious - but a good, fun wine for parties, and at a great price.

The nose was heavenly - deep, rich and intriguing. The color was deep and dark, tending toward brick at the edge. It was medium-bodied, but with a very full flavor - spicy and earthy up front, with a lingering finish that turned more fruity at the end. Five of us drank it (and a few other bottles of wine over a 3-hour lunch) and universally found it outstanding. We gave a small glass to the waiter and wine steward, who were also suitably impressed. Absolutely delightful!

It was perhaps slightly sweet for a good Pinot (.5). The body was very nice and it pleasantly coated the mouth (2). The flavors of raspberry and canning cherry were predominant and appropriate to the variety, but somewhat subdued (1.5). There was no perceptible bitterness (1). Tannins were smooth and soft, but somewhat low (.5). Overall, I found this to be an acceptable Pinot Noir, but nothing special (2). I score it a total 0f 15 points on the UC Davis scale. Not much of a nose - what there was was vaguely red berries and dust. The flavors were not intense, nor the finish long. It is not a bad wine, just not a particularly good wine and certainly not a memorable one.
