Decanter Italy Tasting (London): Delicious fragrant nose, lightly elegant palate, stone fruit and a splash of florality. Could do with a touch more acidity but this is delicate and appealing.

Good floral nose with some gooseberry notes. Palate is a let down and fades very quickly to a non-existant finish.

Very much a bargain at £12 for a 20 year old wine. This is fully mature with well resolved tannin and veil of fruit over the tobacco and leather. There's some bacon fat in there too but ultimately this lacks the complexity that makes ageing worthwhile. Interesting to try though.

Decanter Italy Tasting (London): Ripe, rich red fruit supported by blackberry. Fair tannins with crunchy acidity and a sympathetic oak treatment balances the wine well. Young and needs time but is way overpriced at £36

The first thing that strikes you about this wine is it’s wonderful freshness. 2009 was a warm year in Austria and up to 60% whole bunch fermentation with stems ensures a superbly crisp crunch to the precise plum and blackcurrant fruit. Overnight, I was rewarded with a slightly softer edge to the wine with elegant lines, clear minerality and a rich depth to the fruit and light herbal notes, finishing with a sprinkling of spice and pepper. The more I tasted, the more complex this wine became, liquorice started to emerge as did cherries and thyme, concentration appeared to increase and new depths became evident. There’s plenty of structure in the form of rounded, minerally tannin and lively acidity, suggesting there’s still plenty more to give.

Decent wine that displays some elegance and complexity, cranberry, strawberry, leather, smoke, toasty oak and some tarry spice. It lacks intensity and is a touch on the light bodied side but it does have a fine finish. Tannins are ripe but light suggesting that there is probably no more than 3-5 years development left. Enjoyable now though.

ProWein 2014: Unmistakable SA Cabernet Sauvignon fruit nose and palate. Firm tannins, ripe fruit and oak still a tad intrusive. Needs more time but should settle down well.

Restrained, balanced blackcurrant with a touch of leaf. Light tannin and ready to drink. Light coffee toast on the finish. Polished wine, would be very difficult to spot as South African in a blind tasting.

Still vivid purple with classic leafy blackcurrant nose and a minty edge. Sweet fruit, ripe blackcurrant and vanilla, Plenty of grainy tannins and enough acidity to see some ageing. Still very primary.

Clear medium gold with a persistent mousse of fine bubbles.

Clean, pronounced autolytic nose showing considerable development. Buttered toast, crumbly biscuit and ripe strawberries.

Dry, high acid with a velvety mousse and medium alcohol. Pronounced toast, lees and autolysis on the palate with red fruits on the long finish.

This is an excellent Champagne that has pronounced, complex flavours both on the nose and palate. The mousse is silky smooth and all components are in harmony through to the long finish.

Tasted on Cathay Pacific first class.

Good example of a zero dosage rosé Champagne. Whilst the fruit feels firm due to the high acidity, there's none of the harshness I normally associate with zero dosage. Cranberry and strawberry with straw and a splash of citrus. Develops on the finish to leave a pleasantly creamy sensation.
