We tried the 2004 and did not find it to be nearly as good as the 2003. The 2005 was recently released so hopefully that one will stand up to the 03. We'll see. |

6/3/2006 - Rob MacKay wrote: 90 pointsBig fruits up front with some slight spice and licorice notes. Rounded out well with cedar tones on the finish. The 18 percent petite sirah in the blend definitely adds some depth to both the very dark color and the spice flavors. |

5/6/2006 - Rob MacKay wrote: 84 pointsDefinitely not as good as the 2003 Three Valleys but still decent. Medium to full bodied with some cherries and spice but you can feel the alcohol even though it is only 14.1 percent, which is not high for a zin based wine. While we usually tried to keep a couple of bottles of the 03 on hand, we will not do the same with the 04. |

10/4/2008 - Rob MacKay wrote: 89 pointsMy wife and I are not big Zinfandel fans but when it comes to Ridge, we always make an exception. These guys know how to make Zinfandel and in my opinion, they are probably one of the top 2 or 3 Zinfandel producers in California, if not the world. They do a wide range of Zinfandel blends ranging from low to relatively high priced and the Lytton Springs bottling is just a little north of the middle in the price range. Great juice here with lots of fruit and depth with just a touch of a blackberry jam flavor. This is an excellent bbq wine that a lot of people will enjoy. |

7/5/2008 - Rob MacKay wrote: 84 pointsIf you are looking for a big jammy zinfandel, this is for you. I think you could dip your morning toast in this wine and be happy with the results. For me, this crazy jamminess is just a little bit over the top but I know that some people do like it so this wine might be right up their alley and the price of around $17-18 probably doesn't hurt much either. I wouldn't buy it for myself but since a friend brought it over to a party, I had to give it a try. For what it is and for what it costs, it's not too bad. |

8/23/2006 - Rob MacKay wrote: 81 pointsJoseph Swan does a fantastic pinot which we always look forward to so we decided to try their Zin. Right out of the bottle the nose gave the impression of a fruit bomb. Somewhat promising for a Zin if it can balance the alcohol on the palate. However, the alcohol gives the impression of a shot of jack daniels. To me it seemed way out of balance and nowhere near as good as Zins I have had from Ridge, Rosenblum and others. |

12/20/2006 - Rob MacKay wrote: 87 pointsBig nose of dark red fruits and jammy strawberry and raspberry flavors. This wine contains a massive amount of alcohol. The label show 15.7 but I would think that it is closer to 16.5. The big flavors mask this high alcohol level very well and you'll be giddy and smiling before you know it. |

12/10/2010 - Rob MacKay wrote: 87 pointsA little surprising for a Zinfandel based on what I would normally expect. Starting with the color; I expected a rich impenetrable deep red violet color and instead, the color resembles a Pinot Noir with it's light red transparency. On the nose there isn't even a hint of VA as noted by the prior CT tasting note. Instead, there's some nice red and purple berry scents mixed with a touch of spice but the alcohol also tickles the nostrils a bit. (15.8% abv). This does start out a little thin on the palate but with some aeration, it starts to gain weight but never quite reached the depth or richness I was hoping for. Finishes with some oak nuances and a touch of heat on the back end but not as much as I would have expected given the alcohol level of the wine itself. Overall, it was different then expected but still pretty good if you give it a little air. |

The nose isn't giving up much outside of a little bit of heat and a slight raisin note but the flavor is where this wine really shines. This is a big, bold, jammy, zinfandel but very smooth and delicious. |

11/19/2009 - Rob MacKay wrote: 90 pointsI normally avoid Zin like the plague due to its over the top ripe jammy fruit and high alcohol characteristics that you so often see but I hear such good things about the Turley Zinfandels that I decided to give their base bottling a try. I must say that I am certainly very impressed. Lots of blackberry fruit on the nose and a tease of the 15.9% alcohol as well. On the palate there is a nice balance of ripe, but not overly jammy, fruit and a nice firm feel to the tannins on the finish. I am surprised that the alcohol doesn't come through on the palate the way it does on the nose. Tasty and ready to drink now, this wine renews my interest in the varietal in a way I wasn't really expecting. |

2/24/2007 - Rob MacKay wrote: 88 pointsA massively huge wine with a boquet of jammy dark fruits on both the nose and palate. Somehow the nearly 17% alcohol is masked quite well by the jammy flavors and smooth texture so everything is in balance pretty well. While still a very good zin, this one is nowhere near as good as the 2003. |
