12/19/2015 - ewineguy wrote: 92 pointsDevin and I held an impromptu Christmas Veranda Time and were pleasantly surprised to have 35 people show up despite some surprise rain and week before the Big Day. We opened a total of six wines, three white, three red, trying to cover all the bases not knowing what pot luck side dishes would arrive. The main staple was a tomato based chicken orzo soup that was a hit. |

11/26/2013 - ewineguy wrote: 91 pointsWe had a gang here tonight and opened a lot of wine. We had it with steak (Kale and Quiche, really). In the glass it was thick and inky purple. We had an ope CdP at the same table and they were worlds apart. The tannins were soft, but present. I got the cherries from some of the other notes, and after reading it the butterscotch or even toffee element. There were no smoky or meaty elements you might associate with this wine. Regardless it was a hit and everyone enjoyed it. |

12/24/2015 - ewineguy wrote: 93 pointsAs part of our usual Christmas Eve tradition, we headed out for dinner. Thank you to the team and crew at Piccolino’s for being open and fixing up a great meal. I brought the Sangiovese as I was intending to have the Veal Oso Bucco. Instead my son in law, Ryan and I enjoyed it. He had the lamb Oso Bucco, but I gave into the Lobster Cannelloni in lobster bisque sauce. So how did that work? |

8/8/2015 - ewineguy wrote: 91 pointsI enjoyed this by myself as o was the only one drinking red. We had family over for some prime rib-eye. After a Belvanie 14 Caribbean Cask, went looking for something special. Pulled this from the rack and opened about 45 minutes before tasting. Deep dark purple, but not as viscous as I was expecting. Nose was great, but not over the top. Some florals and a hint of berries. Deeper and richer in the mouth. Mineral like graphite like texture at first. Softend to a pepper like feel and taste. I'd agree with Triplet below as it was smooth almost to the point of being under sophisticated. Great glass of wine. Enjoyed a glass with the steak and one after. Look forward to finishing the bottle and glad i have a few more on the Eastwall. |

2003 Gaja Langhe DarmagiLanghe DOC Cabernet Sauvignon more |
5/30/2008 - ewineguy wrote: 90 pointsGaija Gaja led us through this amazing technical tasting at the Post Hotel Wine Summit in Lake Louise Alberta Canada. The beautiful daughter of Angelo was captivating, entertaining, and educational as she walked us thought the family history, vineyard history, and personal knowledge of 9 spectacular bottles of wine. The 2003 Darmagi, was a pleasant way to wrap up and incredible technical tasting. It was a dark purple in the glass and just sticky enough to hold the sides well. That viciousness did not reside in the mouth as it was too jammy. This had many Bordeaux stylings with cassis, oak, fireplace smoke aromas. It seemed a bit harsh but that could be its youth. I actually enjoyed this and made a note to get one case. It was an amazing tasting and Gaija Gaja did a marvelous of job of keeping all in the palm of her hand. |

7/30/2010 - ewineguy wrote: 90 pointsThis great Zin, Cab, Syrah pour is always a hit. Its deep dark purple, not a big nose but explodes fruits and spices in the mouth. You get plums, cherries, but the fruits seem well balanced and full bodied not sweetie tarty. It has kind of a chewy quality to it. Went great with the Mexican Food we had. |

8/9/2018 - ewineguy Likes this wine: 90 pointsI try not to read the tasting notes before posting, but it has been a while since I posted. I was tasting this for my wife. It was a deep dark purple and was fruit forward. I got plums and meaty spices on the nose. It was a bit viscous but not sticky. It was acidic but not offensive. Smooth is what my wife called it. She mentioned cherries and candy (honey of butterscotch?). It was nice but not overly complex. |

12/25/2013 - ewineguy wrote: 93 pointsHaving a bodacious Prime dry aged standing rib roast called for a special bottle of wine. I chose the 2006 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia Valley Washington. Mounts St. Helens did this terroir a great favor on May 18, 1980 by spewing several inches of fine volcanic particulates in Walla Walla, Yakima, Coumbia River Valley drainage system. This ash along with a basic fertile valley is producing some over the top red wine to give Tuscany. Bordeaux, and Napa a run for their money. A dark but not opaque violet tinged pour had just enough viscosity to cling the glass, but we could not call it sticky. We definitely got the chocolate and berries (Black) that you read about in moost of the other reviews of this wine. Devin quickly called out pepper and spice, which I agreed with. Our tannins had mellowed right out of the bottle after quick run through the Vinturi (aka Barbie toilet). It was a rich bit smooth cab. I managed to save myself a half a glass which I will enjoy right after I finish my blog tonight. Merry Christmas Everyone. |

5/31/2008 - ewineguy wrote: 99 pointsThere were many amazing moments at the 2008 Post Hotel Wine Summit in Lake Louise Alberta Canada, but one of the highlights was a standing room only technical tasting of nine vintages from Chateau Mouton Rothschild. The charismatic and entertaining Adrien Laurent, North American Export Manager for Baroness Rothschild led us through this barrage of big Bordeaux and explained label by label nuances of the various artists who have graced the labels over the years. My first observation was how all nine glasses appeared the same dark inky purple beautiful color. The 1995 as a true work of art. I’d have to replicate everything I said about the 96 and then some. Here are my comments from the 96, |

5/1/2010 - ewineguy wrote: 88 pointsI alone enjoyed this at home. Devin was having a white Burg and I opened this. It was simple to say the least. It was offensive in any way just very simple. The color seemed proper, dark inky purple. It was not full bodied almost dilluted. There was no "cling" factor at all. The nose was very subdued, but got earth, mud, potting soil smells. In the mouth it had a gritty merlot feel to it leather, smoke, and dirt came to mind. I enjoyed it with a nice hamburger with a slice of smoked gouda across the top. It will give me something to sip on the rest of the week. |

10/20/2007 - ewineguy wrote: 90 pointsYeah. After starting the night out with a great Chassagne Montrachet, and a great stuffed chicken, I needed something big and red. Cuurant came through and maybe some blackberry. Some, including Parker mention a plum and or sweet vein to this, but I did not get it. It seemed drier and bigger than other zins I enjoy, (Grgich Hills and Chateau Montolena). Just a real good wind down the evening glass of Zin. If I was hanging with someone, it would have been a great ride along with a good Dominiacan. |

4/20/2010 - ewineguy wrote: 91 pointsThis was a hit. It was dark puplr in the glass, it looked rich and sticky though the glasses we served it in did not do it justice. It was smokey and oaky but a nice tannin balance. Berry and currants came across. People were mentioning licorice and earthy. No one said it was over the top. To Simi's credit, even neophytes enjoyed this big red. Bravo. Glad I have 6 left. A great vlaue. |

2/20/2014 - ewineguy wrote: 92 pointsWe enjoyed this at Angelimi Oesterai in Beverly Hills CA. While it was not as dark as I expected, the lighter Ruby color presented itself well. Definitely not thick and chewy, but barolos are not supposed to be. Right away I got spices and minerals without an acidic tang. This was a fun one just to sip and analyse. In the mouth I got smked meat flavors, a touch of leather, and a hint of chocolate. I would and did give a 92. I will be looking for some for the cellar. |

5/6/2009 - ewineguy wrote: 90 pointsA group of this enjoyed this at Hannah' in RSM, CA. David, the owner was supposed to join us but could not so he set us up with 2 of these beauties. Inky purple, chewy, just the right amount of Oak and cedar, smoked meats came to mind, casis and all around lushness. Great drink. We finished both and tone it down a notch to the 05 Cask by Rubicon, a soft landing. |

She picked up on some earthy dirt and leather, and while I got some of that I found it softer and berryish. The taste was lush and full. I got pepper and dark berries and some minerals but in a real nice way. This is drinking nice now but should set up well. |

I was anxious to get it home and enjoy it with a turkey melt. Devin and I enjoyed the simplicity of it. It was not as dark as other had reported but a deep violet in color. Some florals hit the nose first and it coasted nice in the mouth. It was not complex. Some berries that I cxould not name. The power of suggestion madr them raspberries. It kind a tingled on the tongue which was nice sensation. While I look forward to getting this in the wine room, these will not last long. Good stuff. |

2/12/2019 - ewineguy Likes this wine: 90 pointsWe had moved about 70 bottles from the Draper house to the new wine room in Heber. This bottle was actually a test to see how some of the wines held up to not "Perfect", storage. Beyond it''s Ideal drinking window, I was not expecting much. It was very good. It had lost a bit of its umph from earlier tastings but it mellowness was not offensive. The florals had died a way but the smoky meaty vanillaish licorice essence came through only a bit more mellow. I think that was my last one. |

7/17/2010 - ewineguy wrote: 91 pointsMario and Joann came over for a nice meal of bone in rib eye. We kept this to pour with the meal. Dark dark inky purple. Coffee-espresso, currants, and spices came to mind on the nose. Then a few flowers but nothing over the top. In the mouth a big splash of spices, earthiness, smoky meats, and a hint of licorice. I did not get the licorice but was eventually talked into it. It had a chewy feel to it which I liked. These Walla Walla/Yakima cabs are spectacular. This pour had a strong resemblance to the mathews at a much higher price. Good stuff |

12/24/2009 - ewineguy wrote: 92 pointsI opened this in my continuing quest to learn more about Yakima Valley Washington Cabs. We were having a Christmas Eve Taco party with our friend Brian and Elizabeth. I was anxious to try this again as I had a bottle this summer and it was good. It was a dark plum color but lightened up around the rim. On the nose I got berries (sorry can’t nail them), cloves, and a hint of vanilla. Really pleasant. This was thick and chewy in the mouth. More fruits and spices. It went great with the tacos, though I could think of a few Zins I had that could have matched better. It went well with some cheese and grapes afterwards. |

4/20/2010 - ewineguy wrote: 89 pointsAgain, not very popular at the party. I did not do a good job of selling the special attributes of the Temp grape. This was a dark real dark purple glass of wine, almost inky black. It was very earthy, more sos than other Haza's I have tasted. The nose was loaded. I got berry, meaty, exotic florals. As it opened, it was still a little stiff. There was a lot going on and I could not gove this pour justice. I have 10 left and really took forward to enjoying it on its own. |

10/4/2008 - ewineguy wrote: 90 pointsThis was opened at our anual Oktoberfest party. We always had a problem finding a decent german red so this year I quit trying. I read about this wine and picked up two cases from Amazing Grapes who gave it a great vote of confidence. I tried it right out of the bottle with rental stemware. The color was gorgeous, inky purple and dark. It had a mild floral nose to it that had me concerned about standing up the worcst were serviing up that night. On the tongue, it had a real nice spcy little kick to without a lot of acidity. There was also some pepper and smokey feel to it. It was the hit of the party depsite some nice zins and a couple of great reislings. Eighteen bottles made it down that hatches. For the money, one of the best wine buys I've mad in a while. |

Just this side of chewy. |
