2016 Vietti Barolo Castiglione

Nebbiolo more

5/12/2019 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 94 points

The nose on the 2016 Castiglione is stunningly dark and alluring, as it draws me closer to the glass. Here I'm finding notes of crushed strawberry, with wild herbs, orange-spiced tea, smoke, licorice, and hints of white pepper. Its silky textures flood the senses with a mix of ripe red and blue fruits along with sweet herb tones, which are complimented by zesty acids and saturating minerality. Yet through it all, fine tannins slowly mount with each sip, leading to a structured finale, as mineral-infused sweet cherry resonates amidst hints of tobacco and cedary spice.

The 2016 Castiglione is a total rock star, and amazing at this price point.

No detailed notes other than to say this this is drinking beautifully. If you're sitting on a number of bottles, make sure to check in on the 2014 now to witness a moment of early maturity that is breathtaking. It's rich with dark red fruits, plums, leather and dusty rose. The tannins are present yet sweet and rounded all under an air of balsam herbs. Really fantastic stuff and with years of development in-store for us all.

The nose was youthfully poised but also quite primary, showing mineral-infused sweet spice, with notes of tobacco, wild herbs and bright cherry. On the palate, I found velvety textures contrasted by vibrant acids, carrying densely packed red berry fruit, wrapped in a complex web of minerals and spice, with fine tannin mounting with each sip. The finish was long and structured, even as vibrant acids made the mouth water, with tart cherries, saline-minerals and sweet herbs resonating throughout.

2016 Bedrock Wine Co. The Bedrock Heritage

Sonoma Valley Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

10/12/2017 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 94 points

The nose was wonderfully fresh and vivid with crushed stone dust and spice giving way to pomegranate, bright cherry, exotic florals, savory herbs and hints of animal musk. On the palate, I found a zesty, spicy expression offset by silky textures as tart mineral-laced cherry and blackberry saturated the senses, back by hints of violet candies and black licorice. The finish was incredibly long and intense with black fruits, crushed violets and hints of tannin clinging to the palate. There are so many layers in the 2016 Heritage that it’s exciting to think what a few years in the cellar might do, yet I’m finding it hard to resist already.

Another stunning performance from the '14 Produttori Barbaresco, showing beautifully right now but with many years of enjoyment ahead. The nose showed a mix of dusty sweet cherry and cranberry with cedar spice box, dried florals, fresh rosemary and mint. On the palate, I found soft, juicy textures, giving way to ripe strawberry, minerals, and sweet inner florals, in a wonderfully lifted and feminine expression mixing perfectly ripe, zesty fruit and a tart twang of savory herbs. The finish was long, resonating on tart cherry with a coating of fine tannin.

I remember the first time that I tasted the 2014 Barbaresco normale, and how much it impressed me then. I’m happy to say that this bottle showed that lightning can strike twice. The 2014 Barbaresco showed a classic bouquet of dried roses with ripe strawberry, dusty minerals, hints of cinnamon and crushed mint. On the palate, I found initially soft textures with pure, ripe strawberry, which were quickly firmed up by a mix of fine tannin and brisk acidity. However, with all of the structural components in this glass, the experience remained quite enjoyable with inner floral tones, saline-minerality and persistent fresh red fruit. The finish was long, structured and lingering on dried strawberry, minerals and savory herbs. Yum!

2015 Château Malartic-Lagravière

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

12/15/2021 - Eric Guido wrote: NR

Is it possible that the ship on this label is subconsciously bringing an initial burst of silty minerals and crushed wet stone to mind? Nonetheless, I love it! The 2015 Malartic Lagraviere is a pure joy tonight, with its decidedly wild red berry profile complemented by notes of tobacco and dusty dried flowers. This is graceful and lifted yet with a core of unruly acids mixed with intense tart fruits and hints of sour citrus that create an adolescently tense, almost sultry, yet fully satisfying impression. Fine tannins frame the finish, puckering the cheeks, yet there's enough residual energy here to balance. This is Bordeaux for lovers of nightlife that lasts till morning.

The ‘15 Rauzan-Segla, to me, was the wine of the tasting. The nose was dark, animal, mineral, and intense, as crushed blackberry and raspberry tones gave way to infectious spice, minerals and dark earth. On the palate, I found rich, silky textures offset by a balanced acid and tannin mix, as dark fruits and inner florals tones saturated the senses. The finish was long with lasting minerality and fine tannin. The first thing I did following the tasting was to check where I could buy some for my own cellar.

The nose was dark and earthy, showing haunting dusty florals, dried cherries, crushed mint leaf, and smoky minerality. On the palate, I found soft textures, giving way to ripe black cherry backed by zesty acids with saline minerals and slow mounting tannins. The finish was long and structured as tannins tugged at the senses, resonating on dried red fruits with tongue curling acidity. It’s amazing to think that this is a wine from a riper vintage, it shows wonderful balance, being easy to enjoy now but also capable of aging in the cellar for an easy decade or two.

10/18/2017 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 96 points

The 2010 Flaccianello della Pieve is absolutely gorgeous with a nose with dark red berries, spice box, dried herbs, balsamic tones and black earth. It nearly coats the glass with dark red, verging on purple viscosity. This is undeniably elegant, silky and refined, yet vibrant too, as youthfully lean red berry fruit is offset by brisk acidity and fine tannin. The finish is persistent and structured as the fruit leans more to the black spectrum, joined by hints of savory herbs and minerals. This is one for the ages.

11/13/2015 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 96 points

Talk about potential. Through a series of events I was given the opportunity to taste this bottle three times throughout the day, and each taste was better than the one before. At 10am, it was all about intensity and densely packed fruit laced with minerals and finishing on tannin. At 1pm, it began to open, gaining flesh and nuance as spice, leather, earth and balsamic tones joined the mix. At 5pm it was a study in elegance. Still youthful in its tannin, but so giving all the same. Gorgeous floral tones and dark red fruits gave way to cedar and minerals. This is a wine for the ages.

2013 Comm. G.B. Burlotto Barolo Monvigliero

2/3/2018 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 95 points

La Festa del Barolo Master Class Tasting (Del Posto): The nose showed the classic Burlotto Monvigliero bouquet with black olive tapenade, roses, violets, crushed cherry and minerals. On the palate, I found soft textures with pure strawberry fruits, inner florals and life-giving acidity. The finish was medium-long with lingering cherry, minerals and olive-tinged inner florals.

This wine receiving 100 points from one of the major critics is the worst thing that could have ever happened to it. In my opinion, it's a very unique wine that will only be appreciated by those who love it for being an outlier, a singular expression unlike most others. Years from now people will taste this 100-point wine and scratch their heads over it, while those who would have appreciated it, have been shut out by the massive increase in price. It's very sad.

7/23/2019 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 96 points

The nose showed sweet exotic spices mixed with wild herbs, hints of pepper and graphite, as notes of crushed blackberry and blueberry skins developed in the glass. On the palate, I found silky, polished textures, offset by a mix of tart black fruits and contrasting sweet spice, while blue florals, sweet herbs and a hint of medicinal black cherry washed across the senses. It’s tannins remained nearly unperceivable until the long, dark finish, as they were enveloped by waves of dark fruit and soften through brisk acidity, which kept the experience vibrant and fresh, as hints of savory herbs, spices and a hint of ripe orange slowly faded. I find myself raising my score on the 2016 Quilceda Creek Cabernet.

The nose showed a mix of dark red fruits and minerals offset by hints of vanilla, cocoa and clove. On the palate, it displayed silky textures with impeccable balance, showing red and black berries, spice and fine grain tannin that provided perfect grip. The finish was wonderfully long with a mix of red currant, spice, sweet herbs, and palate-coating tannin. A hint of blackberry bitterness lingered. The 2013 Signature was stunning today, but it should be even better in five years’ time.

The 2017 Sonoma Hillsides presented a fresh and exotic bouquet, showing spicy dried florals, cinnamon, sweet lifting minerality, ripe strawberry, blackberry, ginger and orange zest. On the palate, I found soft-silky textures with a mix of ripe red and black fruits, as purple florals resonated throughout, along with zesty minerals and a slight twang of citrusy acidity. The finish was long with a coating of dry-extract like red fruits and floral tones seeming to cling to the senses, emanating exotic spices and hints of blueberry. This is so easy to love and should provide a lot of pleasure over the near-term. However, It’s hard to say how it will mature over time.

On the palate, I found silky textures, offset by savory, spiced cherry sauce, and nervous acidity, as savory herbs, with salty minerals developed and hints of tannin slowly mounted, yet the 2000 remained fresh throughout. Here I found mineral-infused black cherry, dried sweet spices, crushed roses, and florals on the nose. On the palate, soft textures were quickly firmed up by stern acidity, which both dried out yet also seemed to add energy, with gripping tannin. The finish was long and structured, with tannins saturating the senses, contrasting brisk acids, tart berries and spice.

2015 Alberto Loi Cannonau di Sardegna Sa Mola

more

1/28/2020 - Eric Guido Likes this wine: 91 points

The nose showed intense depths of both savory and sweet, but also a primal, rustic edge, as a constantly changing mix of crushed raspberry turned to cherry, then Indian spice, cinnamon, cedar dust, moist earth, and tobacco. The longer it spent in the glass, the more it seemed to reveal, as a litany of sweet and savory herbs, and even spiced apple, joined the mix. On the palate, I expected more weight, yet instead found soft, fleshy textures lifted by brisk acids, as ripe strawberries washed across the senses, leaving steely minerality and hints of green stems. The finish was medium in length, taut, as its acids continued to play with the senses, with resonating notes of hard red candies and sweet herbs. Frankly, you could spend the better part of an hour simply taking in the bouquet of the Sa Mola, even if the performance on the palate is more about instant gratification.
