2021 Ridge Geyserville

Alexander Valley Zinfandel Blend, Zinfandel more

1/5/2024 - CheviotCellar Likes this wine: 93 points

Opened cork but left wine in bottle for 3 hours in the cellar before trying. Contrasted with the 2019 Marietta blend also from Geyserville.

The ridge is 75% obscure, vivid red and pink and much less dense looking than the Marietta. Nose has leather, mint, fig, stone. More texture and weight than I expected from the color. Palate has baked berry pie, vanilla oak. Higher acid and tannin, a round texture in the mouth. Finish is long with black pepper.

More of a Bordeaux profile than a California Zin. Aging potential for sure but I thought this awesome right now and great value. Will try to get more.

Blend of 76% Zinfandel, 16% Carignan, 6% Petite Syrah, 2% Alicante Bouschet.

This was very 'ok'. Showed a strong sense of 'Zin' but it just didn't say much else. Dense and structured. Not really closed. Just there. Stayed that way probably at least an hour. A decent wine but clearly you expect something better here. Maybe a decant would have helped. Mysterious.

Nice California zinfandel from Turley here. It is rich, concentrated, and lots of flavor. Not too complex - but can zinfandel be complex?? I have yet to find one that is. I personally do not think this merits its price, it is over priced, and for the money spent it under delivers. Also, too much alcohol on the palate (15.5%), it is overpowering. Once you taste the wine, you get the large gush of fruit up front and then an overwhelming wave of alcohol that just dominates the palate.

A monster wine that is too young to drink and too much to handle. Searing tannins, heavy spice and alcohol comes through. Give it 10 years and it will be beautiful but still loaded with personality.

ZAP TRADE TASTING, nose of red and black fruit, allspice, and ink, same on the palate, big body, well blended as its seamless, very tasty, this wine ages very well and improves as it ages, long finish.

Fading. Suggest decanting first for 30 minutes keeping decanter in the fridge. Still very nice but past it prime.

Slow out of the gate, this Sonoma County red recovers after a good vinturi and
a few hours of air. Weaves together an interesting tapestry of robust flavors
featuring black tea, bay leaf and olive with a tobacco framed edge. Layers of
tastes reflecting fresh brewed coffee and black licorice glide effortlessly across
the palate. Tannins are fine grain, maintaining finesse and style. A vibrant,
pinpoint delivered finish graced by black raspberry and dark chocolate,
accented with a touch of oak. Amazingly still fresh for a basic Alexander
Valley Merlot. Drink now.

This wine was lost in my cellar before a friend told me about cellar tracker. Sadly, it was waaay past prime. Very slight scent of plums along with an earthy musty smell....wasn't the cork. Color was toward brownish tint. Little flavor of fruit....maybe a little plum. Smooth finish. We drank it but I was longing for a better wine.

I think the time to drink this was about a year ago. But who am I to waste a drinkable bottle of wine? The bottle was good, but the whole time I was wishing I was drinking something else. Nothing special. Brown edges and just barely a hint of fruit left.

strange development on this one - had bought a case on release and enjoyed it over the years - expected this one to be the best, but found it had lost the best of its fruit flavors but failed to take on the favorable characteristics you expect from a well aged wine - harsher tannins than expected in the mid and finish

I found this in the cellar and since Jake and I are batching it while my wife is on travel, we decided to try it with grilled rib eyes. It has definitely mellowed, but that is not a bad thing, and I think it still has life in it for a few more years. Still spicy with lots of plum and chocolate flavors with a touch of nutmeg and a touch of oak. Not a long finish, but the tannins have definitely softened a lot. We enjoyed it.

Who would think a grocery store Merlot could be so long lived amd still worth drinking after all this time? Nice berry and cherry fruit, moderately interesting midpalate with drying and slightly rough tannins. I give it kudos for being well made and able to withstand the test of time.
