When the wine was opened - we were very impressed the was a very expressive nose with a lot of fruit - cherries, cranberries, red currant and some forrest floor - also a very expressive long aftertaste - but the wine faded out and we did not get the same palette and nose - we are getting medium tannins and acidity which is well integrated - but in the beginning this balance really impressed us - now we are sitting whit a more flat experience - we are ending up at 91 -but two hours ago we would have been clearly higher.

Oak very well integrated. Opened on the 23rd and slow-oxed for 24 hours. Drank first glasses on the 24th. Very tannic on the 24th, calmed down a bit in subsequent days. Very impressive wine, will only get better in the next 5 years.

Sangiovese study, Volume II (Chicago, IL): Kind of an odd duck in the lineups tonight. Shows dark fruit on the palate but a bit of a weird, dusty thing as well. I thought it might have been oak. Quite dense and impenetrable now especially with respect to the tannins; probably could have used a modest decant of an hour or two.

Still on the young side but the wine is round and and with silky edges ne felt polished , smooth and with an elegant side. Nice fruit, good use of oak here and albeit we have no real stance on Brunello modernist vs classicist methodologies this was objectively a very good wine and we felt with a few more years of cellaring will reach peak. A very solid 92 for now

Beautifully complex and long. A tart tannic finish blending nicely with the other complex flavors. With Jeannette and Michael celebrating Birthday and Mother’s Day. Sesti’s best is indeed.

Joel's Tuscan Lunch (The wilds of Kent): First time trying Phenomena and what a treat. This was opened by mistake so an extra-special pleasure.
Nose gives ripe red cherry, a distinct old church and incense note, and generally smells expensive (Thanks Oliver).
Another great Brunello doing that iron fist in the velvet glove balancing act. Surprisingly accessible now and immeadiately passed my "Wine Searcher" test with me buying a case online then and there.

Tuscan Lunch chez Joel (Kent countryside, UK): This was a bottle that opened in error and was not supposed to be on the flight plan! What a treat it was.... Initially slightly muted on the nose later revealing red fruits and super fine and silky tannins. Nicely balanced and whilst the oak is there it does not stick out. Lovely.

Joel's Tuscan Lunch (A farmhouse in leafy Kent): Opened sort of by accident, but I'm very glad that happened as it was excellent, and certainly not too young to appreciate. A really deep, refined cedary wine, pure and balanced, the whole covering the palate with layers of ripe but bright fruit. Some grip, but the tannins were so elegant.

One-hour decant with some sediment appearing during decant. Woodsy aromas during decant. After resting, wine was clear; very dark garnet in bowl lightening slightly to garnet and a thin amber rim and equally thin clear halo. Initial nose in the glass: freshly ground dark Kona coffee. After about 20 more minutes, the wine opened: raw honey, caramel, dark fruits, forest floor and a little spice. Coffee remained on the long finish. Over the next hour or so, the coffee reasserted itself in the palate but pleasantly so. This wine went well with prime steaks. Sad it was my only one.

Tertiary flavours (mainly leather) are developing and indicating that the drinking window is open. Still enough fruit and tannins left to develop further. This is a fantastic wine in the making. 95+

A little early (in its life, not in the day) to be trying this. In good shape now but could do with 2-4 more years rest But if you have a case, don’t be shy - it’s drinking well, just not yet as good as it will be.

Excellent Riserva Brunello. Plenty of air given - around fours hours. The fruit is prominent, really prominent with a hint of sweetness. Quite rich and powerful and bursting with flavour. For me, this is drinking really well now with the fruit so well displayed. The wine tastes mature even this early and I get the feeling it could turn if held too long. I have four more bottles to be drunk over the next four or so years I feel.

1988 and 1990 Brunello di Montalcino night (Lafiandra, Singapore): This was very, very good indeed, if just a touch on the modern side. The nose was really expressive, with fragrant notes of woody incense swirling around aromas of plums and blueberries, some dried violets, earth, a hint of bloody meat, and then little touches of herb and spice. Quite captivating. The palate though was where it really lifted off. Wow. There was a lovely liveliness, even transparency to this, with a really bright expression of dark cherries, red plums and fresh berries - all showing a good bit of power, yet always remaining lithe and sinewy, with a lovely sense of structure throughout. A real delight. It was lovely on the midpalate and into the finish too, with lots of those juicy dark berry fruit flavours, this time infused with wafts of spice and dried herb, and again a blush of powdery incense trailing away into a beautifully long, detailed finish. This was a tremendous wine - complex, delicious, and showing beautifully now. My only down point was perhaps the rather noticeable amount of wood on this, but otherwise, really, really nice.

Jolie teinte claire grenat évolué, bord orangé, le nez qui va avec, sous-bois, tertiaire, délicat cependant. Le fruit est passé, il n''en reste que des effluves discrètes, séchées, macérées ...
Le tactile de ce vin, avec ses tanins polis et soyeux a souhait, est la belle surprise de cette cuvée. Il est doux, élégant posé.
Ceux qui chercheraient plus d'énergie ou plus de force tannique resteront peut-être sur leur faim (à boire).

Library release, recorked at the winery sometime in the 2000s

The nose is quite tertiary - mushrooms, forest floor, dried tomato leaf. In fact, from the nose, this wine smells all of it's 43 years.

The palate speaks to a much younger wine. It is very fruit driven - black cherries dominate; but also some dried red currants and cranberries. There are tertiary mushroom notes too, and some vanilla and cedar, as expected from a reserva. Acid is still around, body is pretty good and the structure is very evident. Tannins are soft. Great pairing with hanger steaks. This will not benefit from further aging; but it interesting to drink now.
