Such a fun orange. Big long taste that just keeps going. Not much on the nose. But massive flavour. Slight tongue coating that you get with orange, but mostly just big bold juicy.
I get orange savy and chard vibes for sure.

Cloudy, orange, chamomile, orange peel, struck match. Very nice and floral. Lemon orange juice. Chalky texture, black tea. A little nondescript?

Drank at Enoteca L’Antdoto in Trastevere, Rome. A charming natural wine bar, which made for a marvelous evening. An orange Greco Di Tufo, that just blew my mind. It was so aromatic, not at all what I expected. It had a heft to it, due to the skin contact. Recommended by the staff and appealing to me, as I have a connection to Campania, home of my grandparents. I just loved it. It is imported in the States by Louis Dressner, so I will be tracking it down in earnest. I also will be on a mission to try more wines by this producer.

Notes of candied fruit, citrus and stone fruit. Minerality and salinity as well. Subtle oxidative funk. Medium body and medium-high acid. Has a lot of complexity showing the benefits of age but not straying into the realm of fortified wine.

If this wine were a person: she would be a mildly delulu, aspiring model, currently known for posting thirst-trap photos and videos on whatever social-media app du jour. She just returned from this year's Burning Man mudpocalypse and hasn't showered in a week, but at least she cleaned up for dinner by rinsing off in the rain. She's still wearing a bikini, ski goggles, and knee-high fluffy boots... Visually, the wine is cloudy from fine sediment, but the bottle is loaded with chunks at the bottom, like a kombucha or like the bottom half of the woman's boots, caked with playa mud. The nose is showing: slightly funky, yeasty, bready, and mineral notes with a touch of body odor wrapped around a citrus core. The palate partially reflects the nose, but predominantly displays the fruit of that citrus core, with a hint of unsweetened peach. The refreshing mouthfeel is surprisingly crisp, there's ample acidity, and only the faintest hint of tannic structure. Big finish that extends with the yeasty, citrus, and unsweet peach notes. *Cantina Giardino was founded in 2003 by a group of friends focusing on making natural wines. They pull fruit for all their wines from about 7 hectares in the area, and own about 2.5 of those hectares. *Their Falanghina Fra wine is an orange, skin-contact wine from 100% Falanghina grapes with an average age of 30 years and aged in large, chestnut casks for 12 months.

My initial impressions on Night 1...not pleasant, with a strong sulfurous smell and taste that did not dissipate. Thin, green pepper vegetal, overly sour and acidic. I get that it's a natural wine, but it doesn't seem representative of my impression of what a good Aglianco can be. I'll give it another try tonight. At this point, not a re-buy for me.

Night 2: Suphurous and vegetal elements dissipated significantly in the 24 hours. Still very astringent but more interesting with mouth-puckering tannins. Kind of like drinking balsamic vinegar. Revising my rating upwards from 75 to 80. Still not a likely re-buy for me.

Bought at a local Italian tile shop nearby without any prior knolwedge about the wine.

Very serious wine. Full bodied, black fruit, high acidity, harsh tanins. Drinking Mushroom blood. Most comparable to a Mourvèdre I drank recently. Give this 2 hours of air or another 5-10 years in the bottle

Scores never tell the story of a wine and wines like this are particularly hard to assign a number to. I purchased this on a whim, knowing next to nothing about it except that it regularly retails for $50+ USD, was on close-out for $30, and is a Campania Aglianico, which is a nice place to explore.

With the first sniff and sip the wine announced itself as a "natural wine". It didn't scream it, but it wasn't a whisper either. It starts with very high tones, varnish, tart plum and tart blueberry. There are a lot of flavors mingling and it's hard to identify them. Strawberry jam? Singled orange peel? Tart cherry. Everything cool toned including the prune and yet there is something like the presence of scrub in a sunbaked arid environment. After drinking this I did some research and did not find much, but it was raised in amphora. No surprise at all!

I wish I'd have had this over 4-5 hours instead of closer to two.

Very Good++, I really did like it and it went well with our meal (modestly spicy sausage, ~roasted tomato, mushrooms, cannellini beans) and I think this would work great with ribs on the grill. Nice acid cut here, but not bracing.

An interesting wine I'm glad I tried.

Bet you've never had a wine served from this. The Fiasco bottle has been associated with Chianti since the 13th century, but today is tied to a certain amount of controversy, especially in the US. Some have argued that the bottle is impractical and difficult to pour from (in a restaurant, probably), and that the straw covering can hide defects in the wine. Others have pointed out that the bottle is often used as a marketing gimmick, and that the quality of the wine inside the bottle is not always high (pretty much this).

What's amusing is that Cantina Giardino fills these bottles with not red, but orange wine made from Coda di Volpe (a grape grown primarily in Campania and Puglia). Drank with hot pot, which was a top call. Hazy, pale orange in the glass. Scents of tangerine juice, bergamot, juniper, clove. Bright, fresh flavours. Juicy, light, with powdery texture. Excellent length and succulence. Some elegance to it, but mostly a glou-glou style. Fine boned, very refreshing, unreal smashibility. Would be cool to see these make a legendary comeback.

After an hour decant, it has a nose of stewed plums, candied cherries, black pepper, tar, and very light floral notes. It has large pepper, plum, and game notes with smaller notes of cigars and bacon. High tannins, high acidity, good legs, very dry, with a hue of burgundy moving to brick around the rim.

Rustic bouquet with boiled cabbage, soy and also on the palate in fact quite unpleasant. I brought a leftover home, so tomorrow there will be an update, because I want to taste this wine again tomorrow to see if the wine is really that bad. (All tasters almost immediately emptied their glasses in the spittoon.) No score for today.

And when one eats local olives, the salt blasts all the fink and you've got amazingly pure Aglianico fruit.

Drank out magnum with friends, no formal notes. Modest skin contact influence, nicely appointed bright acid and flavors of grapefruit, melon, pear, and roasted almond. Very enjoyable, the magnum went down quickly amongst us four. Can probably hold on a new few years in this format. I imagine 750s are starting to show some negative effects of age.

Day 3 - Mondavi Bordeaux glass.
Skin contact falangina. Incredibly artistic label. Looks unfiltered. A hazy and cloudy, pale apricot in the glass.
Served cold, fresh crisp apple skins and apricot on the nose.
Sharp and angular in the mouth, there’s a cider-esque quality to this wine, with hints of apple skins, and tart Granny Smith apples, but then dried apricots come flying across the palate, and the tannic finish reads of a metallic nickel laden structure.
I’m getting the sense that this wine might flesh out and give a more generous experience in the future.
Drink now for a tight and crisp, lip smacking experience or hold at least a year for added weight and complexity.

Tasted blind. Hazy salmon in the glass. Very fruity on the nose with notes of cherry, raspberry, strawberry. The acid is quite high on this, while the alcohol remains moderate. I was steering towards Burgenland because this reminded me so much of Claus Preisinger and his Blaufränkisch/Zweigelt editions. Nice wine with food, but it needs to be decanted and served on a warmer temperature rather than bone-chilled.

PNP into Riedel Red wine glass (“Root” day): Bright garnet with slightly bricking rim.

Deep and elegant nose of ripe black plums and cherry, that has an “almond” like unique and concentrated note, with signature olive notes from this grape without any reduction and VA.

Superbly high acidity and seaweed-like minerality, with deep and complex, juicy black fruit flavors to support. Very restrained and again signature black peppery spices on the finish.

Simply the great example of this variety and region. 94 points easy.

With time after about 1 hour: more soy-like complex fermented notes that adds to the complexity.
