12/3/2021 - MRGeo Likes this wine: 91 pointsNot my favorite, but finished #1 out of 5 in blind tasting of CA & VA PVs. The color wasn't darkest, but wasn't lightest either - nice purple color, with some transparency. Not a big nose, but flavors of dark berries. This definitely had some big flavors, dark berries, bit of vanilla and hint of black pepper. Light tannins throughout. |

5/8/2020 - wineshaman wrote: 92 pointsWow, really impressed, so much fruit, currants, cassis, plum, cherry, just a touch of sweetness, amazing for the Douro region of Portugal nevertheless for a mid-Atlantic vineyard of the USA. On another note, cellared this non vintage VA Port since 2013. |

6/28/2019 - MRGeo Likes this wine: 88 pointsProbably heading patt peak, but still tasty. Dark yellow hue. Heavy nose of pineapple and apricots. Heavy mouthfeel, comes across sweet bright tropical fruit on front. Very crisp and almost dry finish with more citrus and green apple with hints of raisin and honey. |

9/8/2015 - Sijan Likes this wine: 88 pointsClassic Virginia Cab Franc. Surprisingly fresh fruit & primary notes after 9 years of aging. Quite high acid. A bit foxy, but that's common in Virginia reds. |

7/3/2015 - isaacjamesbaker wrote: 88 pointsVirginia Governor's Cup Case: Vibrant ruby color. Nose: cracked pepper, bay leaf, loamy soil and roasted coffee overtop of blackberries and fresh blueberries. Medium+ bodied, grippy tannic structure, medium to low acid. Really well built with blackberries, blueberries and black currants, mashed together with graphite, coffee, charcoal smoke and black pepper. Some toasted cedar and fallen leaves as well. Structured but gets silky quite quickly in the glass, showing off more nuanced earth and floral elements. Time to spare for the cellar. |

12/29/2014 - niloc36 Likes this wine: 90 pointsI don't usually disagree with the CT average rating on most wines but I must register a dissent here. I know VA wines pretty well, living just across the Potomac in Maryland, and thismismdefinitely one of the better reds. Color: deep dark red with nary a hint that it is seven years old. Virtually no browning. Bouquet: a slightly sweet aroma of stewed fruit that might put some off but that I find especially alluring. Although I might have anticipated a loosely-knit, completely unstructured wine from the bouquet, it is actually rather well put together palate-wise, with decent acidity and fine but not retiring tannins. The red fruit flavors are still rather primary, which makes me suspect that this wine will at least hold for several more years. The overall impression is of a rather well equilibrated wine that comes near, but nevertheless avoids, blowsiness. Nice, long finish. Ok, this isn't an elegant Bordeaux style a la Barboursville Octagon, but it shows that Virginia reds aren't all thin and nasty and can do a quasi-Napa imitation. |

1/24/2014 - wineshaman wrote: 90 pointsWhat do we have here, decanted 1hr, a Virginia facsimile of fine port, not a vintage port, but yet not a tawny port. Not too sweet, yet plenty of toffee, caramel, nutty, cherry, hints of brandy soaked walnuts. Impressive, for IMHO can age and improve for 5 to 10 years easily. |

4/2/2013 - davidga75 wrote: NRIf I judged a wine by its label, I would never have bought this bottle -the label is amateurish and unappealing. Luckily, this was a gift and so I gave it a chance. Right out of the gate, the nose was really nice, richer than I expected with smoky dark fruits and even a slightly meaty note. The palate is medium + bodied, with roasted and spicy fruit character and a pleasant, slightly bitter note. The structure is nicely integrated with a little bit of gritty structure on the finish but overall it's a well balanced, tasty wine that shows what VA is capable of achieving. Drink over the next year or so since its probably not getting any better. |

Ripe gushers candy on the nose, along with raspberry jam. The palate is like strawberries, sugar cane and pancake syrup. It's sweet, but somehow still fresh and quite pleasant. This wine showed more acid than most of the others. |

The fruit was pleasantly dominant and the wine had none of the vegatal earthiness associated with many VA Cab Francs. Went well with a simple chicken and quinoa dish. |
