3/26/2024 - gordoyflaca Likes this wine: 96 pointsThis wine is awesome. Super complex. Zingy! Round! Minerals! Hay! Beeswax! Quince! Petrol! Hyacinth! A butterscotch cookie fell into the Ocean! Naranja agria peel! Hazelnut! Best $16 I ever spent. Should have bought a case and had one every other year. This could go another 10. |

4/12/2023 - grapenomad wrote: 92 pointsMacvin is made with no fermentation process. The juice and must of Savagnin grapes are reduced in half by boiling, and the resulting liquid is then fortified with brandy. Once the "wine" reaches 16% alcohol by volume it is placed in oak casks to age for six years. Grappa-like nose, but doesn't overwhelm the finer nuances of the wine. Distinct, rich, fresh and complex. A standout in its category. |

4/12/2023 - grapenomad wrote: 92 pointsNutty and salty on the nose, with some spiced cider, green olive and oyster notes. Electric acid, tart green apple and pear, but there’s also these interesting richer notes of orange marmalade and preserved lemon. A chalky and mineral presence as well. Drunk this by itself, but I can just imagine it ripping through a chicken roast. Oh my days! |

4/12/2023 - grapenomad wrote: 92 pointsIntroducing this grape and style to your friends could be absolutely fascinating. Immediately upon opening, there's a strong truffly nose, which fades with time, but proceeds to open up to green apple, oyster shell, dill pickles. Bizarre, but so fucking tasty. Acidity highlights the fruit and the savoury notes really give you food for thought. Maybe this doesn't sound like a rave review, but you just have to drink this. |

After told it was not apple, I knew it was cold climate. In the 2 years since I have had it last it has matured a bit, showing more autolytic notes (cider like) and less like an English Sparkler. Still get some. |

6/6/2022 - lake.vino Likes this wine: 94 pointsI think this winemaker uses a rather reductive winemaking style (which is, admittedly, a bit of a contradiction with a flor yeast approach such as this bottle uses) - but what else explains the initial burnt tire notes that show up in youthful bottlings? Deep golden hue. Nose saltwater, white peach, butterscotch, toffee, Still hints of that burnt tire reduction. Palate incisively, cuttingly acidic, substantive mineral extract, and again that mix of gunflint and nutty oxidation. Pear, smoke hints. I keep coming back for more - this is unquestionably a challenging wine - and beautiful in its way - likely close to what the winemaker intended. |

6/2/2022 - lake.vino wrote: NRI'm not scoring this because I'm truly unsure what to make of the bottle. Namely, I am not entirely clear if what we're drinking is what the winemake intended. There are things to commend this bottle - and some issues at hand. Nose is a mix of burnt rubber reduction, walnut husk, toasted bread, and under it all, a nice peach/apricot and perhaps stewed apple note. I still am not sure if it's reduced, oxidized, or somehow, both. The low sulfur suggests it shouldn't be suffering too much reduction - but the burnt tire is unmistakeable. The palate is similarly situated - with a fennel , vegetal note too. It's got a long mineral finish, great acid. It actually works better with food than on its own. |

11/26/2021 - UpfromtheCellar wrote: 88 pointsWow this stuff is such an acquired taste! After what appeared to be a VISABLE cloud of sulfuric gases blew off upon opening, it settled down into amazing lemon shrillness (is that even a word?) with a touch of almond lurking around on the back and sides of your palate. Sadly, the sulfur never entirely left the nose...... |
