Fresh and tannic, this had damson and plum fruit larded with bacon fat. Warm and spicy it’s still quite tight and closed and may reward cellaring for a year or two to reveal its full potential. CHP 87pts

Aromatic and perfumed this actually tasted of grapes. Absolutely bone dry the mid-palate was a bit hollow and the finish a little aggressive and bitter. Dry Muscat is not a style of wine I’m that keen on so the mark awarded probably reflects that. CHP 85 pts

100% Negru de Drăgăşani from the Oltenia Hills, a region in the southwestern part of Romania. Fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks. 14,5% alcohol. Total production 10,400 bottles. Tasted blind.

Luminous, deep cherry-red color. The nose feels surprisingly pungent and smoky with somewhat aged yet reductive aromas of charred meat, some ripe dark berries, a little bit of perfumed floral character, light gamey tones and a hint of crushed peppercorns. Has a somewhat Syrah feel to it. The wine feels ripe and somewhat warm yet dry, quite robust and even a bit extracted on the palate with a medium-to-moderately full body and somewhat evolved flavors of peppery spice, some crunchy notes of crowberries and tart cranberries, a little bit of evolved smoky character, light meaty notes of roasted game, a hint of sour cherry bitterness and a brambly touch of raspberry. The wine is high in acidity with balanced, somewhat grippy medium tannins. The finish is long, dry and somewhat smoky with quite intense flavors of charred game, a little bit of sour cherry bitterness, light crunchy nuances of crowberries and fresh black raspberries, a hint of savory spice and a touch of crushed peppercorns.

A somewhat evolved and distinctively smoky Romanian red that might've developed some gamey Syrah-like nuances with bottle age. Several people were guessing whether this was a Syrah, whereas I was thinking of Mondeuse or Schioppettino. Although showing some age, the wine is still remarkably fruity and vibrant, suggesting that the wine could actually evolve even further from here - although its balanced structure doesn't really call for any additional aging. Once you get accustomed to the smoky and gamey notes and somewhat robust overall feel, this is actually quite enjoyable, even if the wine isn't a grand vin by any means. Nice.

100% Crâmpoşie Selecționată from the Oltenia Hills, a region in the southwestern part of Romania. 13% alcohol. Tasted blind.

Still surprisingly youthful, pale greenish color. Characterful, sweetish and even a bit odd nose with aromas of candied tropical fruits, some gaseous notes of butane, a little bit of ripe apricot, light floral notes, a smoky hint of toasted bread and a touch of savory spices. The wine feels bright, somewhat exotic and a bit linear on the palate with a medium body and dry yet moderately ripe flavors of apricots, some crunchy apple, a little bit of savory spices, light floral nuances and a toasty hint of smoke. The wine is moderately high in acidity. The finish is lively, quite fresh and rather acid-driven with medium-long flavors of fresh apple, some cantaloupe, a little bit of crunchy whitecurrant, light steely mineral notes and a hint of toasted bread.

A pleasant and enjoyable little white, but nothing particularly memorable going on here. The wine was much older than I anticipated - it actually felt quite youthful and at no point did I imagine it was already nine years old - but I guess those toasty and smoky tones might've actually resulted from extended bottle aging. However, the wine hadn't really turned into anything really interesting with bottle age, so I guess this was a quite simple white wine to begin with and it won't turn into something more interesting with additional aging. Priced somewhat according to its quality at 60 Lei (approx. 12€).

A grape I have never tasted before. Negru de Drăgăşani is a cross intended for high yields; but this proves it can make pleasant enough wine.

Imagine the ripest black cherries, so ripe that they border on jam or compote. Good oak here too, with vanilla and smoked wood notes throughout the wine. Medium body, medium acid, medium - tannin. Kind of zippy. Reminds me of Zinfandel.

PnP. Medium red, surprisingly youngish appearance. Generous aroma of red fruits, red currants, raspberry, some spicy stuff behind. Elegant palate, hA, l+T, m-B, again red fruits, cranberry in the finish. Drink now but it seems to be capable of further cellaring. Maybe more complexity will evolve.

Fresh young red wine. There is a good chance it can improve 1-2 points with further aging.

Three Borders Wine Group, Hampshire, UK. Tasted blind. Pale lemon colour. Nose is rich, fruity, sherbet lemon. Palate shows rich fruit, bitter, sherbet. This wine needs food. I'm not familiar with this grape and when tasted blind, it was reminiscent of chardonnay. Enjoyable.

Much more settled than last year’s tasting of the same vintage.

A good quality table wine that does not quite come close to the excitement of Tamaioasa Romanesca Sec white and was also bought from Wine Society.

Much to admire about Prince Stirbey offerings and this wine made exclusively from the Saperavi grape is no different in that regard.

Curious nose of coffee and cherry tart with a light dry balanced taste in the mouth. Not much of a finish.

This wine will never pull up any tree trunks (which wines do at this price point?) but it is still a very enjoyable quaffer.

Sour cherry, raspberry, lactic, funk, acid. Oak is mild, tannins are milder. It's a good wine and reasonably well balanced, but I can't see myself getting it again. It's a bit better with food than on its own, but it is still quite drinkable.

Pale ruby, with medium aromas of raspberry, black cherry, black plum, blackberry with hints of black pepper, leather & liquorice. Much more pronounced in the mouth with the same flavours as aromas plus a little tar. Dry, pretty high acidity, medium (+), firm but ripe tannins, medium (13%) alcohol, medium body, medium (+) intensity and a medium finish with a food friendly bitterness.
Nice enough and happy I tried it but doubt I’ll buy again and there are better wines around for the money.

V pale in the glass, nose of lemon, tangerine over a richer base (lanolin, not quite waxy), a touch of blossom, cold stone, mineral. On the palate v high acid (lemon, grapefruit), strong minerality, a touch of ginger. Very strong bitterness yet manages to be integrated? Palate v long and persistent. VGV.

PnP. Dark red with purple reflections, 6. Youthful aroma of dark berries and green leaves. Harmonious palate, high acidity, tannin, deep fruit. Drink now-2025 or maybe later? Really a mouthful. Like Barbera/Dolcetto on speed! Fine to drink now for it’s youthfulness but due to the acidity present could be a candidate for developing tertiary stuff?

🍇 100% Novac. 👀 Medium ruby with pinky purple rim. 👃 Cherries, raspberry jam, strawberry jelly cubes and spicy rose. 👅 Less fruity on the palate with some black cherry, but more dominated by old oak, tobacco, forest floor, rose petals, violets and menthol. Dark chocolate on the finish. Medium acidity, light tannin, medium alcohol. This is a really interesting medium bodied wine with plenty of complexity for drinking with or without food. It may keep for a few more years but I think it’s probably best drunk in the next year or so.

Very unusual wine and a tale of two halves. On the nose starts off very fragrant and sweet - baking spices and brown sugar, powdery violets. On a second sniff the floral characteristics come through with an underlying muscat/grapey freshness. On the plate - what a surprise! Bone dry! High acidity, grapefruit and lime, persistent throughout the long finish (easily 20sec+!), finishing with heat, ginger and nuts. Not unlike a white Rhône but somehow more exciting and let’s not forget the silly price tag of £10.50.. quite a find.

Very fragrant and very acidic. Hard to drink without stomach upset and too fragrant to avoid clashing with food, it's quite far out. I couldn't say it's a bad wine, but it's not very nice, at least right now.

Vitis Vetus = old vines - 50 years old
Only made from free run juice
aged 14 months in old oak on lees and then the rest of the time in bottle
Smells smoky and toasty a bit like a Hunter Semillon
Chewy acidity, grapefruit notes, and a strong smoky quality
Concentrated and long, textured
Superb wine, one that changed over the course of the day and became more and more complex
This is 11 euros ex cellar which is a bargain. Competes with the best of sancerre
