2009 Château Léoville Barton

St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend more

1/8/2024 - Donjcorleone Likes this wine: 95 points

Expressive aromas of crème de cassis, forest floor, tobacco and #2 lead pencil lead to a rich, round, balanced dose of palate staining sweet blackberry flavors with a lingering eucalyptus edge.

So I’ve been staring at this unopened, original wood case of 2005 Leoville Barton for the better part of the last 15 years and against my better judgement, I pulled a bottle tonight. After a two hour double decant, there were faint dark fruited and tobacco aromas hiding behind a wall of impenetrable toasty oak and the palate was just more of the same story. Bury this one for another decade (or two); rating reserved.

Soaring aromas of black cherry, leather and pepper that lead to a silky, fresh blackberry, tobacco leaf and mineral driven palate that is both long and savory.

Holy acid Batman. The funny thing about this wine is that it tastes, not too surprisingly, exactly like you'd expect an aligote made by PYCM to taste like. It has a fairly rich texture, there is a slight touch of the pycm oak signature (though all used barrels for this one) as well as some reduction. And then it's a BLAST of lemon and acid. Really delicious but at this point in its life it begs for food (pasta with clams worked perfectly).

Was sorely in need of a good 2 hour decant and then this became wonderfully fragrant with candied black raspberry, cedar and earthy tobacco scents that led to a soft, layered, earthy red fruited licorice expression that was in perfect balance and kept getting better and more expansive with the more air it got. 94+

10/28/2018 - La Cave d'Argent Likes this wine: 92 points

Sampled from a bottle coded L131234 (disgorged June 2017), this non-vintage sparkler showed impressively well. Straw-colored and with a very brisk tiny bead, it delivers an intensely aromatic package of peaches, citrus, cardamom, bread dough and coriander. Medium-bodied, crisply acidic and layered in the middle, it goes on to close with a vibrant, lengthy finish. This outstanding Champagne should be at its best over the next three years. Drink now-2021.

I have enjoyed other vintages of this wine but the 2010 was a huge disappointment. No fruit on the first day and no improvement on the second. My wife disliked it also.

Opened and drank over a 4 hour period. This starts off with a nose of dark fruit, damp earth, leather and rose which lead way to a mouthful of tart cherry and chocolate on the flavor profile along with an herbal and black pepper laced finish. A very enjoyable wine that is beginning to drink wonderfully.

1/1/2014 - Donjcorleone Likes this wine: 94 points

Bottle #1 from a case purchase from the Wine Library @ $29.99 per. An intoxicating nose of black cherry, dark chocolate, tar and vanilla lead to much of the same on the full bodied dark fruit concentrated palate which glide on through to the silky smooth finish. An excellent Toro for sure.

1/4/2014 7:26:00 PM - I would say that for a top notch Toro like San Roman that it will easily be strong for a good 10 years after vintage and will probably hold for another 10-15 years, though more nuanced. It really becomes more of a question as to whether you prefer the forward power of youth or the more nuanced complexity of age, as to what might constitute peak/decline for any specific drinker. For example, if you like powerful primary fruit, 15 years might be in decline, while if you like more nuance 5 years might be too young and 15 just hitting stride. I hope that helps you out somewhat in your decision making process of when to pull the cork.
