2018 Realm Cellars The Bard

Napa Valley Red Bordeaux Blend more

Gorgeous. Upon opening, oaky vanilla sweetness was a little overwhelming, but a 3 hour decant revealed blueberry jam and ripe blackberries along with dried tobacco, leather, and earthy spices. Palate is dense and vibrant, juicy black cherries with cocoa powder, tobacco, and light menthol notes along with a cedary finish. Lovely silky texture. When I want a big Napa wine, this is it. It’s dense and powerful, but balanced. It shines after a decant and I think it might need 2+ years to come together, even though it’s excellent now.

I would consider this an improvement over the 2017. It’s already more coherent and better textured.

10/21/2020 4:22:00 PM - With a wine of this quality, I'm always more than a little excited to take one for the team and give it a test run (even though my stock of it isn't huge)!

Unless you really want to have a bottle, I'd let this one rest. It's truly a great vintage and I'm excited to see what it's like once it settles down. The Round Pond seems to me to have a similar profile, but maybe more floral IMHO (a really good comparison, I think). If you only have one of the Round Ponds and the spirit hits you to have one to the two, I'd take the Bard. Either way, this will knock your socks off if you give it the time. I just couldn't resist sacrificing one of my bottles; it's so much fun to see where a wine like this might be going.

10/21/2020 4:49:00 PM - Wow! Nice to hear the inside scoop on those, thanks! I will probably do the same in the coming months, but these 18's are stellar

10/21/2020 5:08:00 PM - @MJP, it's the best in the limited window I've been drinking them, but would say it's best to wait. I haven't had a bad experience with '18 yet, but could understand winemakers' differing impulses post-2017. Will be interesting to see if the same is true for the '20s and beyond

10/21/2020 5:24:00 PM - Ooh! That's going on my list, thanks (once I can find it...). Haven't been blown away by R-M's 18's (have never had anything from MW), but I read your note and it sounds like an interesting wine

Simply gorgeous. It's a dense, powerful wine with lush dark cherry on the nose and the palate. The nose has light rose and cedar notes. The cedar was more prominent before a 3 hr decant. The velvety core of fruit and tannin on the palate is bolstered by bright mint, well-placed acidity, dusty rock, and baking spice. Delicious now, but try to wait a while because this will only get better.

7/24/2020 8:32:00 AM - Thank you! I appreciated your note as well. The comment on the "mountain coolness" of Montecillo is spot on and is even more perceptible in contrast to other wines from a vintage as hot as 2017.

Cranberry, dark floral notes, and a faint mineral character. Palate is fruity with crisp acidity, with cranberries, raspberries and more floral notes. Fruit is still dominant to me. Quite tasty and a very versatile wine with food

A ripe, but balanced, wine with cherries and slate on the nose and fresh ripe blueberries and cherries on the palate set off by more crushed rock, vibrant acidity, and a delicate cocoa finish. Chalky tannins. Body is indeed on the lighter side of cab. Really a fine value for a solid California cab.

5/12/2020 7:34:00 PM - I think 2022 is kind of pessimistic. It doesn't quite have the structure for the long haul since it seems to be built for enjoyment now, but I think it could certainly go another 5 plus years.
