Tasting with Duncan Meyers of Arnot Roberts (Ordinaire): Sublime bouquet of charcoal and spice, bitter melon, cactus. An utterly moving and engagingly wild wine, deep with fruit and pepper and with the sorts of complexity that are naturally driven by a long season of slow, steady, fog-tempered ripening. Comes at you from multiple ends of multiple spectra.

Tasting with Duncan Meyers of Arnot Roberts (Ordinaire): Of the '09-'10-'11 Arnot-Roberts Fellom Ranch Cabs, this stands out for its touch of smoke on the bouquet and how it feels softer and ripe on the front but then firms up on the tail. A ripe and sweet wine against its stems. It's lusciously bitter like a dark chocolate truffle but also surprises with celery and other nuances and that surprising structure bringing up the rear. Best 2017-2021.

Tasting with Duncan Meyers of Arnot Roberts (Ordinaire): The 2010 is the most classic of the three ('09, '10, '11) and threads the needle with great balance but with less personality than the 2009.

The bouquet is immediately higher-toned and saltier than the 2009 but this is fresh, classic, and lively. Impeccably balanced and detailed, showing off the perfect vintage. Well-placed stems and whole clusters complement the spicy nose. More reliant on tannins for its structure than the '09. Still long in the finish, but that's where this lacks just a little something, devolving into light strawberries and alcohol; even a touch astringent. HOLD. Drink 2018-2025

Fellom Ranch is next to Montebello.

Tasting with Duncan Meyers of Arnot Roberts (Ordinaire): My favorite of a Fellom Ranch '09-'10-'11 vertical, this warm, dark, accessible, and just-perfectly-ripened wine introduces itself with a stunning bouquet of perfectly ripened berries and dark chocolate and then offers an unstoppable palate of deep, dark, persistent cabernet notes with inviting structure and plenty of backbone. Long, long sophisticated finish. Drink now through at least 2020.

No formal notes as this wine was served at a lunch party. Will say that it is a lovely rose and wonderful for summer drinking. Must buy more next year.

Dusty aroma with elusive mushroom and berry notes. Sharp bright fruit on the palate, almost a hint of spritz, a bit thin on the mid-palate, strong acidic finish. One-dimensional. 50 + 15 + 15 + 7. Going to give it a second night. [Second night was no better ... I'm puzzled by the other ratings for this bottle. Maybe I have a bad one.]

Sailing along nicely. Tannin still present and needs 2 hours to really open up. Looks like a huge Syrah but drinks much lighter. A bit of saline. Nice

Bright and lively. Zesty lemon with a mildly buttery tone to it. Well done on the acidity front--mouthwatering. Everything is in balance. If it were more complex it would deserve to be compared to a fine Chablis. Excellent.

Starts a little prickly, but 15 minutes of air and that is gone. It remains on the higher acid end of the spectrum, but the more air it gets the more the dark berry fruit, smoke, pepper and meaty elements emerge. I enjoyed this over the course of a few hours, but I want to cellar the rest for several years.

I'm definitely the outlier here, but this seems more like a Sauvignon Blanc than a Chardonnay. Citrus and tropical notes. Not really my style.

"Clary Ranch, how can I help you!"
"Hello! Can we get a few tons of syrah grapes?"
"Sorry, mister. All out of syrah. How about some nice, juicy olives?"
"Olives?"
"You bet. Finest olives this side of the Mediterranean."
"Thanks, but we were kind of looking to make some wine...."
"Wine, you say! Well, that's just perfect! These'll make the greatest olive wine you've ever tasted! I guarantee it!"
"Olive wine? Is there such a thing?"
"Sure! Why not? You gotcher grape wine, rice wine, dandelion wine, why not olive wine? Mister, when you've got olives as tasty and juicy as these, there's nothing you can't do with 'em!"
"I dunno.... Are you sure you're all out of syrah?"
"Son, I'll tell you what. I've got one last bowl of syrah grapes in the back. I was gonna have 'em myself for lunch, but if you wanna take three barrels of olives off my hands, I'll throw in them there grapes for free. And if that doesn't make the finest olive wine or syrah or whatever it is you wanna call it, then my name isn't Oliver McOliveson!"

Dead ringer for a marsannay. Bright red fruit. Raspberry strawberry. Crisp. Crunchy. Lots of acid. Feral almost. Decant. Excellent like just about every wine from these guys.

PS, I enjoyed this wine more the second night with its crisp green apple acidity and sea salt combo!

Served with charred shishito peppers w/sea salt and a lovely green salad. Great combination.

I like my californian wines like this. Not an overdone bomb, more on the "cool" side. With a lot of smoke & stone flavours alongside a hint of black olive this reminiscent me of a Northern Rhone Syrah. Medium length, nice structure.
