2010 Domaine Allary Haut Brion

Pessac-Léognan Red Bordeaux Blend more

Brought this to high-end tasting, where it was served blind. It scored 95-97 around the table.

Very low quantities made, but damn is this a jammy, sexy, but at same time aristocratic wine !

Within it's drinking window now, but would benefit from more bottle time or some decanting.

Drink ( & enjoy ) or hold !

The story here goes that this wine used to go into Haut-Brion before the owners got it back from a long-term lease. That's what the label tries to play up, as it's technically "Domaine Allary Haut-Brion" but styled like "[domaine allary] HAUT-BRION!!!" No, this isn't quite Haut-Brion, but it's definitely a top-notch Pessac. Mesquite smoke aromas from the pop of the cork are classic Pessac ingredients and the wine has a satiny refinement that bespeaks high-end terroir. The fruit is all red-complexioned though, much lighter in tone than most top Pessacs. The heavy proportion of cabernet franc (which I would not have otherwise guessed from the flavors) may account for that. It started to show more woodiness with time in the decanter, not quite as distinct as it was off the bat. Impressive wine with promising materials just the same.

Never had this wine before, and this wasn't what I expected. Lots of berries and powerful fruit. noting restrained about it. Cab franc? Never got a sense of it...
Interesting experience, but not worth the $200 cost..

Decent spoof I suppose, but spoofy nonetheless. Extremely ripe blueberry fruit, verging on overripe, with a lot of vanilla and chocolate. Plenty of glossy extract with a lot of oak tannin, but it's not thick and heavy, there's good acidity so it's not too sweet, and the alcohol is under control. This is decent modern wine but besides the flavor profile being too ripe for my taste there isn't anything here to suggest Graves, let alone Haut Brion. It could come from anywhere. Horrible QPR, there are a million new world wines that accomplish the same thing at a fraction of the price.

Light in color, the sweet cherry, vanilla, licorice and smoke take little effort to find. On the palate, the wine is soft, medium bodied and already expressive, finishing with black raspberries and a bit of licorice.

60 min decant...inky violet color with fair amount of clarity...very fresh and layered nose of black fruits, mocha and wet earth with subtle floral notes...bold and voluminous on entry with charred ripe black fruits, mulled spices, and graphite all brought together with excellent structure...tannins are young and chewy but refined with well-balanced bright acidity and an extremely long finish...60% cabernet franc makes this a unique PL and a bit more fruit forward than recent left bank tastings but it all works... simply delicious...14% alcohol...given the storied history and purchase by Haut Brion last year, try to find some of this as it is a good value and will never be produced after 2011; imo, 2009 is the best vintage

Located in the Haut-Brion vineyard, this is very impressive. Has some great fruit with a lot of tar. Very big wine now and needs time. Potential for a higher score.

Allary Haut Brion, the new name for the property previously known as La Passion Haut Brion, produced a blend of 69% Cabernet Franc and 31% Cabernet Sauvignon that opens with smoke, herb and cherry notes, medium-body and a soft, red fruit-filled finish. 88-90 Pts

Using the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc in the Pessac Leognan appellation, 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, the wine offers smoke, earth, red and black fruit, spicy cassis, earth, and herbs. Medium bodied and soft in texture, this is a wine of finesse and elegance. From vines planted next to Chateau Haut Brion, very little wine is produced. On average, there is only 300 cases made per year. The wine is produced with the efforts of Stephane Derenoncourt. 89-91 Pts

08 Château La Passion Haut Brion is the first vintage in almost 30 years for this small property. 1979 was the last vintage. Only 2,000 bottles of this wine was produced in 2008 from 1.2 Ha. The unusual assemblage of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon will see 100% new oak. Stephane Derenoncourt is consulting with the property. The wine pops with a nose of flowers, smoke, cherry blossoms, minerals, and caramel. Here is an elegantly styled wine with a soft, round feel in the mouth. Everything is in balance. The wine finishes with blackberries, licorice, and spice that linger on the palate. 91-93 Pts

2009 La Passion Haut Brion will be labeled and sold under a new name, Allary, the last name of the 94 year old owner of the property. The 2008 was the first vintage in 30 years. The fruit has been a part of the second wine of Haut Brion, Bahans Haut Brion, for the past 3 decades. Produced from gravel, sand, and clay terroir, and planted with the highest proportion of cabernet franc in the Graves region, 60% cabernet franc and 40% cabernet sauvignon, this soft, elegantly styled wine offers smoke, black raspberry, herb, and spice aromas. Medium bodied and softly textured, it finishes with the flavor of smoky berries. The wine is produced with the cooperation of Stephane Derenoncourt. 89/91 Pts
