On tasting it, this wine had a hint of cork taint but was still tasting okay. You only noticed the wines shortcomings on the short finish palate wise and at a nice wine dinner was a mild disappointment given the winemaker and pedigree. Have one last bottle of Egelhoff that I will look to try to enjoy soon. Hope the other one faired better than this bottle. |

A couple of hours after opening, the nose on this wine is still pretty tight with faint notes of a soy sauce-like savory profile mixed with dark fruits. However, the characteristics on the palate tells a different story with cassis, currant, bramble berries, and plums. The acid is well-integrated, lifting the fruits, and there's still a little grip from the tannins so this wine could easily cellar for at least another 5 years. The lengthy finish leaves the fruit characteristics tingling in your mouth. I see a lot of potential in this wine so if you're planning to open your bottle, decant it for about a hour prior to serving. |

Wow ... the nose explodes with layers upon layers of black and dark red fruits (think plums, blackberries, black cherries, etc.) that's beautifully balanced with five-spice, black peppercorns, and roasted herbs. These profiles are in harmony on the palate with a rounded mouthfeel, supported by well-integrated acidty. The finish leaves your palate with bright fruit tones and a little spice that lingers after you swallow your sip. I've had Egelhoff wines in the past, but never had one with this kind of bottle age, and I've always loved the way the texture of his wines feel on the palate. This wine is drinking great now, but can easily cellar up to another decade (and possibly more). If you're eager to open your bottle soon, give it a quick decant and you won't be disappointed. |

The finish was long thanks to a spine of acid. I figured old-school California Cabernet Sauvignon but I wasn’t sure how old. I was quite impressed when this was revealed considering the age and my inexperience with this producer. Bravo! Tannins have integrated at this point. While this bottle could easily drink well past 2025, I would open and enjoy now, it’s worth it. |
