5/4/2023 - Denny the Drinker Does not like this wine: 55 pointsI am going to keep this one short. On the nose, petrol and cracked slate. Maybe a bit of cat urine (not joking!). On the palate... I get why someone else here said it was close to vinegar, as mine was as well. Overly oxidized. Undrinkable by the two of us trying to share the bottle. For the amount of money these bottles are going for, Horton Vineyards should be ashamed of themselves, and pulling these off the shelves. |

1/10/2023 - lwec703 Does not like this wine: NRWe wanted to give this Virginia viognier a try because we love condrieu and have heard of Horton’s good reputation with this wine. My first impression was a strong and unpleasant off odor. I understand some viogniers can suffer from this, but I haven’t experienced it this powerfully in the condrieus I’ve drunk in the past. Initially very tight on the palate, and metallic on the mid palate. After about 30 minutes in the glass the wine was much softer but never developed the lovely floral notes I look forward to from viognier. We unfortunately didn’t finish the bottle. |

4/9/2022 - christianminer Likes this wine: 88 pointsI really dislike Viognier as a varietal, but something about this Horton I really like. This is bottle is one of Horton’s special wine, not just one of their 50 wines, but one that stands out. The winemaker really put some effort into this creation and it shows. It is very aromatic and has tangerine notes and flavors. Would buy it again. |

3/11/2002 - timewithwine wrote: NRMonday, March 11, 2002 The last of this wine. A nose of blackberry, tar and tea initially. Later, those are complimented with cherry and black olives. Cocoa is always hinting in the background. A deep purple color in the center, but shading to garnet and eventually a slight pink at the very edge. A film of sediment on the bottle’s shoulder. Blackberry, brambles, tea (very typical of Montdomaine wines - young or old) and cocoa. Some slight raisin, for yes, this wine is showing some signs of fading. The Cab. Sauv. seems apparent on the attack, but is quickly rounded out by the Cab. Franc and Malbec. Somewhat short midpalate. Very long finish, but slightly green finish. Horton was way ahead of even himself with this wine. One of my all time favorite Va. wines. With marinaded london broil flank steak, sauteed mushrooms and wild rice. |

At first I was concerned that this might not have made it, but after opening and giving it a little time it hung together and offered a complex floral nose. On the palate, it was little light with bramble fruits and spice. Smoke, leather and earth followed. A very good showing from a one of Dennis Horton’s efforts and one of the earlier bottling by Horton Vineyards. Unfortunately, this wine co-op (I think that was the type of entity or perhaps it was a joint venture) is now defunct and has been for several years. All served with (apps of ) chevre in Old Bay seasoning, crab in puff pastries, (salad of) apples and smoked trout with creamy horseradish dressing over mixed greens, (entrees of) fresh Va. turkey wet-smoked in herbs, oil, aromatic melange and shiraz as well as cured Va. country ham finished with a baked glaze of apple cider, brown sugar and spices, complimented with spicy mustard with (sides of) garlic beans, savory sweet potatoes gratin with sage sausage, hot pepper hominy, fresh cornbread and biscuits and (dessert of) chocolate bread pudding with bourbon caramel sauce. Tinsleys, Smilys, Fowlers, Whitsells, Sheets, Wilkersons, K. Frank. |

6/25/2006 - timewithwine wrote: NRFriday, March 01, 2002 Deep purple-black in color with a deep bouquet to match. Smoke, sweet fruit (plums and something else) and spice on the nose. Maybe a little garrigue. An initial attack of sweet plums. The smokey, spiciness of the bouquet continues on the palate followed by a gaminess. Nice length of finish. Medium bodied. Oh, what the hell, it had a pretty label also ... Norton grapes and vines painted by C. L. Fleischman in 1867, or so the back label says. With smoked sausage and sauteed peppers and onions (leftovers). Nice pairing. |

11/25/2001 - timewithwine wrote: NRSunday, November 25, 2001 A thin red for Nebbiolo, not opaque, but ruby colored. Some bricking near the edge. Dark cherries and tar on the nose. Very acidic. What few tannins were there were rough and not integrated. Flavors of tar, buckskin, loads of cherry. The cherry flavor is pleasant, but without much longevity. Medium weight; without heft in the mouthfeel. With roast beef and mushrooms. |

While the attack delivers a good concentration of apple and pear fruit, it quickly morphs into butter, toast and vanilla. While this delivers the appearance of balance between the fruit, acid and alcohol, the RS in it is noticeable on the palate and particularly the next morning. Ugh. A half bottle of wine should not a headache leave. 13.2% alc. Recommended with reservations. With [ ] Thursday evening and then used for deglazing the next evening with the Colonel. |

I’d expect butterscotch to kick in soon as well. Nevertheless, this is balanced between the fruit, acid and alcohol. While the oak is a bit big, it’s not overdone. 13.2% alc. 5/30/2008 - timewithwine wrote: NRThe smell of apricot and apricot jam, honey, honeysuckle and orange blossom. Either this is from some intense Viognier fruit or someone threw a load of sugar at the fermentor. The apricot is rather intense on the palate. It becomes more apparent that it’s a dried apricot - the fruit is fading - and that they employed RS for pumping up the wine. The date shown in Cellar! is made up. Actually, as I write this on August 23, 2008, I have no idea when I had this earlier this year, but just remember that I did. Obviously, it was a date worth forgetting. Recommended with Reservation. |
