Elgin Syrah Blend, Syrah more

Tweet up for Elgin Syrah/Shiraz (Chalk and Cork Cape Town): (Tasted Blind): Bright purple hue in the glass, youthful. The nose likewise exudes those youthful notes with a delightful mix of vibrant redcurrant, blackcurrant and blackberry edged by some fragrant summer flowers, all dancing as one.
A juicy entry, the wine is packed with intense fruit, and as it unfolds, it reveals lavender cream, mineral and fleshy black cherrys. In fact, the texture is like chewing on a cherry skin. Full-bodied, with ripe juicy berries the lively acidity cuts through the richness leading to grippy tannins that give excellent structure and extend for some while in the mouth. Made in a more restrained style, the finish is a bit sploshy, but the mineral edge reins in the exuberance.

Tweet up for Elgin Wines: SBlanc, SBS, Chardonnay & Pinot Noir (Elgin, South Africa): (Tasted Blind):
A light green hue indicates a youthful wine.
A sweet hint of pear drops complements the distinct aromas of green fruits with grass and fresh herbs. A crisp, clean palate that is dry and reasonably intensely flavoured with a marked acidity coursing along its way, although sometimes a little tart.
Linearly structured, this is a simple, nicely balanced wine but it didn't stand out.

Christmas Tweet Up for Elgin Wines (2015) (Elgin, South Africa): (Tasted Blind): Pale lemon colour with aromas of guava, cut grass, tarragon, ripe lemons, and a touch of sherbet. The palate mirrors the nose, featuring spiky acidity and fleshy fruit. However, the acidity feels somewhat disjointed and bites on the back palate, resulting in an edgy and aggressive mouthfeel. Closes rather green and a little 1-D. Doesn’t feel integrated.

Wines of Elgin Shiraz/Syrah Tasting (Cape Town Law offices): (Tasted Blind): Deep black-red to the rim. Lifted aromas of red fruits with some notes of tinned cherry and hot pancakes! There was a reductive edge giving unusual and distracting flavours of dishcloth, fly spray, and talcum powder that widened to geranium, car oil, crushed ant, and a pungent acidic smell reminiscent of a millipede or stinkblaar. Not much depth, we were later told it was a tank sample and clearly was at sea.

Mid yellow; Plenty of vanilla ice cream/vanilla pod on the nose with yellow cling peach, nectarine and oatmeal.
The alate follows the nose with lots of direct vanilla-orientated flavours, fairly obvious Chardonnay but nicely racked back with plenty of lively acidity to give it lift and freshness. Fairly intense wine, down the line Chardonnay, not that multi-dimensional but some secondary elenents of oak spice and oatmeal. Works well.

Dilute, simple, good acidity, some crude wine making, works as a simple food wine.
