Stone fruits, fresh, some creamy and toasty notes, medium body, simple but clean and completed structure, smooth texture, all good but a little light, which is no surprise on the 2017 vintage.

Flower Day - nose is red flowers, spice (white pepper?), dark plum, shoe polish and sweet pipe tobacco. On the palate it enters ripe and soft with flavours of ripe dark fruit (blue and black), soft leather and red flowers. There’s medium plus acidity, medium to full body and med ripe and soft tannins. There’s so much fruit the acidity is subsumed and not noticed unless you look for it. The finish is medium in length with the ripe fruit, spice and ripe tannin continuing.

Spotted this in a local store and thought to try it. It's pretty fresh and clean but lacks a little character. Not really reminiscent of the Rias Baixis style of albarino. Overall it's ok but a touch over priced for me.

Flower Day - translucent garnet core with a ruby edge. Nose of red flowers, wet clay, light savoury herbs and spice. On the palate it’s medium bodied with medium plus acidity and savoury flavours of herbs, cranberries, spice (white pepper) and sour cherries. The medium length finish is also savoury with the spice, red sour fruit and some minerality continuing. This is a very good food wine for roasted poultry, rich salmon (Spring/Coho/Sockeye - I would serve it slightly chilled in this pairing) and heavier Umami dishes (mushroom or squash based). Drink now or for the next 2-3 years as it’s under screw cap and won’t develop.

Leaf Day - Showing much more the traditional style of NZ SB today - more towards the gooseberry and herbs and less of the pink grapefruit flavour I usually associate this wine with. Still tasty.

Flower Day - Lemon coloured with green glints in the glass. The nose is full on tropical fruit - guava, passion fruit, star fruit with some herbal elements as well as gooseberry. On the palate the entry is rich and round with the star fruit and passion fruit first followed by gooseberry and pink grapefruit. Then comes the herbs followed by the guava and even a little banana. There’s lots of acidity to balance the huge fruit flavours making it a rich but balanced beauty. The finish is medium+ in length with gooseberry, pink grapefruit and starfruit being the main flavours. Well done! Not elegant but delicious!

Leaf Day - Pale garnet core to edge. Nose of smoke, red fruit (cherry with raspberry), savoury herbs and wet rock. On the palate the soft red fruit is noticed immediately, followed by the smooth texture (although there’s nice ripe tannins and medium plus acidity) and then the rest of the flavours of spice, herbs and crushed rock. I really enjoy the spice/herb mixture on exhale. There’s some warming alcohol on the finish and a hint of pleasant bitterness on the back palate. Very much a food wine for me at this stage of it’s evolution.

Bought Waitrose Wine Direct UK, £10.99, 2022.

This is a Te Awa winery, Hawke's Bay NZ, wine. Te Awa was bought by Villa Maria NZ in 2012. Gisborne fruit.

Loved this NZ Albarino. Very good light-bodied white wine punching well above it's RRPrice, lots of lively acid balances superb fruit. Drink up while the acid's fresh.

a 90-91/100 wine.

N....peach and other stone fruit, some red apple skin.

C....golden straw, looks advanced for a 1 yr old.

T.....nice confluence of fruit and acid, flavours of peach, ripe gooseberry, ripe greengages; leans towards the Foodie style; good early big bold flavours though they end a bit short/aren't properly sustained. Food?....screams 'Fish!'

VFM?.....feels worth around £15.00+ but costs £10.99, a bargain. Buying again.

Decanted 2h. On the lighter side of syrahs I've had. Plum, blackberry, black pepper, a massive amount of baking spices, fresh ginger.

If tasted blind - I'd never never say Syrah.

Oh this is a great little diamond in the rough!

PnP and immediately presented a nose thick of blueberry jam, black licorice, mint with an ever so slight trace of freshly cracked pepper.

On the palate the fruit was more of a blackberry-dominated flavour rather than matching the nose. It was sweet without being jammy. Grippy acidity, almost medium +, salted black licorice and mild, but balanced tannins. The mouthfeel is light and NOT like your Aussie shiraz in any way whatsoever - If blind I'd alllllmost want to say a heavier pinot blend.

On day 2 this completely won me over. Where there was previously jam there now was complexity, terroir, spice and herbs. Oh baby this really came into its own. Mouthfeel remained lighter and I really do liken this in a style of syrah like that of crozes (not originally my comparison but one I definitely agree with). Each sip offered a really interesting and delightful experience.

It's funny as I do find this complex but not a wine that needs to be really chewed on but given some time to breathe (2-3 hours decant perhaps) and this will really sing and be a lovely wine to enjoy.

92 points.
