At this age, this still needs quite a lot of air - after a 3-4 hour decant, this was so incredibly smooth - such silky tannins and literally no residual heat (despite being a 15% wine), with notes of berry and fig. Still youthful but with the air it is so incredibly delicious - as a friend put it, this is "slap yo mama" wine.

The Blind Side - no, not football! (Chateau Simms): I am guessing the wine got at least 1-2 hours of slo-O before tasting, but honestly not sure about the bottle treatment/preparation before the tasting, i.e., it could be more.

This was part of a blind tasting that included the following wines:

1. 2010 Abreu Thorevilos
2. 2021 Scarecrow
3. 2015 Colgin Tychson Hill
4. 2019 Sassicaia
5. 2019 Domaine Trapet Chapelle-Chambertin
6. 2021 Bella Oaks La Genie
7. 2014 Caymus Special Selection
8. 2014 Vice Versa Magnificent 7

2014 VV Mag 7 - Yes, 94 is a very good score, but I admit I was disappointed on the reveal because I was expecting better! I believe this was the very first vintage of Mag 7.

I like this wine, and blind I wrote: "Very smooth wine with nice fruit and some tertiary character, but definitely leaning on the fruit side of the spectrum. Dark black, red and blue fruits with some forest floor, graphite, licorice and chocolate, with a hint of vanilla. This wine is in my wheelhouse." I gave it a 94 (and still give it a 94), but for the money and age, I expected perfection (or very close to it) and this wine did not deliver. It didn't seem like anything was wrong with the bottle, and 2014's, in general, are hitting their stride right now, so I am not sure why this didn't show better. Of course, I had not had the 2014 Mag 7 before, so maybe it just wasn't up to subsequent vintages. Like I said...a very good and very well made wine, but it didn't meet my other-worldly expectations of this wine!

Champers and Napa Cabs Blind - Fun Times! (Chateau Simms): I believe this wine received about a 2 hour Slo-O.

This was in a blind line up of some very prestigious 2019 Napa reds (and one 2016 thrown in), specifically:

2019 MacDonald
2019 Kinsman Eades La Voleuse Du Chagrin
2019 Kinsman Eades Anjea Sleeping Lady Vineyard
2019 Colgin Tychson Hill
2019 Realm Absurd
2019 Scarecrow
2019 Harlan
2019 Myriad Elysian
2019 La Pelle Res
2019 Magnificent 7
2019 Cliff Lede Songbook
2016 Colgin Tychson Hill

2019 Vice Versa Magnificent 7 - I can see why Brian (bsumoba) likes comparing the Realm Absurd to this wine. My first note on tasting this blind was that this wine was similar to wine 4 (Absurd). Elegant style, easy drinking and delicious! Glad I have a couple of these! 96+ to 97 and will still improve! But, so good now! Not quite up to par with the top 3, but like the Absurd, very close!

2021 Vice Versa Cabernet Sauvignon Mysterons

4/24/2024 - csimm wrote: 95 points

True to its name the Mysterons was fairly cat-and-mouse on the nose and the palate. It was truly a bit of a mystery with its dodgy flavor expression and somewhat indiscernible profile. For some reason I can’t recall now, I thought Cab Franc might be in play, but with most blinds, I figured my mind might be playing tricks on me. The fruit seemed somewhat more airy and floating than the other wines, but it wasn’t so light on its feet that it was sans impact. In fact, it was able to take ahold of its course and offer a direct channel of redder berry fruit with successful purpose, finishing with whisps of vanilla and spice. Time in bottle should add girth. Let this one sit in the back of the cellar for 5+ years.

At first pass, this thing was balled up like, well… a ball. Quivering and compact, I sensed this might be M7 simply because of the sheer Oppenheimer-type encased fury-boom potential it possessed, but it was so linear and primary, I couldn’t necessarily peg it until it started to gnaw on some additional O2. And when it finally decided to awake from its dragon slumber, it gave off a death screech of a thousand Game of Thrones episodes and took flight to commence a scorched earth flavor surge of hyper chiseled black and dark red fruit. Spreading its wings further, the M7 straight isn’t playin’ around. This thing is serious business. Pure and dialed-in, the focus on this sniper is pretty unreal. Finishes direct and with absolute intent. It’s a hitman with a mission, so maybe best to dodge its bullets for the next few years. 2021 is proving to be a very distinctive and detailed vintage for some of these Vice Versa wines, most in particular, the M7. 97-99+ points.

If a Northern Rhone Cornas butcher met up with a Stags Leap socialite, you’d have the 2021 Vice Versa Stelzner. This thing is slathered in meat drippings, soil, char, burnt embers, and the black chasm of Dracula’s lost soul. Such a distinctive wine. It has the breadth and flavor characteristics of a serious, salami-shout-out Syrah and the more honed profile of a Cabernet Sauvignon. Finishes as it starts, with the fury of a Viking crunching down on a Hereford cow drumstick while riding a saber-toothed tiger from the swamps of Salekhard, Siberia. Winter’s coming…

4/24/2024 - csimm wrote: 96 points

I had to laugh because I have always considered Dr. Crane fruit-driven for my palate. The first word in my notes says, “fruity.” CT’r Cristal2000 thinks I make this stuff up just cuz I give him a hard time about the fruitiness of Crane. Well, I have to say this was the fruitiest of the bunch, or I suppose I should say, “fruit driven,” which sounds more sophisticated. And in truth, this wine presents as anything but a “simply fruity” wine. The Crane gains quite a bit of concentration and layering as it eats more air. Intermingling waves of black and red cherry, plum, purple [something?] type fruit, and cardamom rush the palate, upsurging with fruit and vanilla on the youthful finish. A fun picnic punch right now, but a wine that will undoubtedly gain more classic elements with 2-3+ years of bottle age, minimum. Try again in 2027.

Grab a bucket of these bicep boys and get on with yer bad self. A more captivating showing than the last great sample I had a year ago. Even better with 4+ years in bottle.

Great right now. I mean, it’s the friendly GIII, so how could it not be?! Concentration and balance are especially notable in 2021, with a refinement that really showcases a sophisticated side of uber yummy fruit that envelops and enlivens the palate. Chocolate covered cherries, with a spit of mineral notes keeps everything in check without getting too juicy. With air, it becomes more even keeled and higher riding, signaling a call for some additional bottle age. It won’t take long before this blossoms, but give it a couple-three years to form into a raving ball of fun-filled fantasticism.

Like a hybrid of Cousins and Beatrix, the Spinning Plates offers a similar profile to its two brothers (or, Cousins…?), with a concentration that is dialed-down but is more tannic and linear in its current state. The primary fruit gets redder with air, with flecks of alcohol and vanilla darting through the core. Like the GIII, the Spinning Plates offers up juicy fruit but shows its youth upfront at the moment. While I’m sure Spinning Plates is designed to impress early on, I do think a few years in bottle will amalgamate its flavors even better. Put this on the table with a 64oz. ribeye and consider yourself all set for some glorious meat sweats. ‘Merica!

Deeper than the day is long, this was a shot across the bow with a concentration cannon that blasted flavor and depth right to the mid-palate, diving even deeper and with more fortitude as it cascaded to the gushing finish. This is Oakville fruit on full display, with rich soil elements injected through the black fruit core. If you like To Kalon, this is quintessential TK all day long. This was one of my favorite showings of the entire Vice Versa 2021s this go-around, even slightly eclipsing the M7 at the moment, simply because the TK was much more flamboyant, chewy, and giving compared to the coiled up M7. Drink the TK now and tomorrow and the next day and the next day… Awesome performance. It’s big, rich, and concentrated, but perfectly composed. 98-100 points.

A pretty wine, with violets and juicy red/purple fruit popping on the palate. Here the nose is muted, but the affable flavors skip along the front end upon first sip, marking the path of a wine that is, though a bit young an juvenile at present, something to keep an eye on over the next few years. With some short term cellaring, I sense this will blossom beautifully. It’s a little primary compared to its 2021 Vice Versa siblings.

This is a broad stroke of a wine, and perhaps even beefier than previous vintages. I sense this will chillax a bit with a couple years in bottle. It’s pure and incredibly focused for such a shouldery specimen. Hold for a couple of years.

Drink now and over the next few years, though it has the spine and drive to last even longer.

Oh, man, this is big in every sense of the word. Big tannins, big oak, big (and surprise, surprise, black) fruit, with lots of cassis all jockeying around, not quite balanced, let alone integrated, 6 hours of aeration be damned, but interesting and promising as hell. Bit of a different textural experience here, with lots of glycerine and creaminess making this slide down in a “I’d never hurt you (excepting the purchase price)” kind of way. Even with this rating, it would be at most a borderline buy for me, with my $ more likely to go to Mysterons or LPV, but man do I like to be in the room when one of these is open. Hold for 5+, I’d expect, for the best drinking experience, but your reaction, like your mileage, may vary. 97-98

The darkness of Mysterons continues, with lots of black cherries, cassis and black raspberries providing a beam of acidity in addition to the tannic backbone which has been prominent throughout. Classic LPV notes of dark soil and rocky minerality along with a whiff of dark florals add further interest. Just went back to look at my notes for the ‘19, and they’re remarkably similar, with the additional 3 years (consumed 2 years later, 1 year earlier vintage) providing just a bit more openness. Like the Mysterons and the Mag 7, I’d be more a holder than a drinker of this at this point, but if you go the other way, aerate the dickens out of it. 97+

The tasting moves on to wines even more appealing to me. I’ve had this wine a couple of times—once brought by great CT friend cyclist, another at the prior tasting at Wheeler Farms, when I bought a couple of bottles—and I’ve found this captivating. It’s dark, dark, dark, with deep, dark black fruit, black earth, dark chocolate, hints of anise and tobacco to lighten, relatively, things up giving more of a Gothic than modern feel. Both cyclist and VV, both with this and the earlier ‘19, have done good jobs in getting this formidable beauty to open, yet I’m looking forward to popping my bottles open in the deep (and what else, dark) future to see how they age and work with food. 96-97

Can I confess that I haven’t had a ton of BTKs (at least compared to LPVs and G IIIs) without getting kicked off CT? This moves up the food chain in very definite way for me from the G III, with more complexity, structure, delineation and power, with some savory and floral notes adding interest. This strikes me as quite modern, almost in a Doc Crane sort of way, and while it may yet have more to give—in fact, I’d expect it would—is a less interesting wine to me than, for example, Alex’s wine from the generally same area. Obviously I’m in the minority, but I do prefer not only the LPV but Mysterons, although it is, of course, just one man’s opinion, on one day. 95-96+

A step up the complexity and structure level from the Spinning Plates, this continues the dark fruit and secondary notes (dark chocolate, earth, rocky minerality) profile but with more structure. A bit oaky, which I noticed here more than the other SVDs, and less delineated. Perhaps will get to a place relatively more interesting to me with time, but at the moment, trailing its brethren by a bit. I’d hold for now. 94+

First wine of the tasting, very graciously hosted by Samantha, and like the others, to my understanding, aerated for 6 hours before our visit. Typical luscious VV dark notes of cherries, cassis (seemed very noticeable after BO, where that wasn’t present), black currants, dark chocolate, some spice. A bit more oak than I’d choose and a bit less structure. Very enjoyable, but as a general “second wine” skeptic, I think you can find more interesting wines at the price point, so I wouldn’t be a buyer. Good now with the air, suspect its best drinking will be in the next 5-8 years. 93+

Eyes Wide Shut - Day 1 (A quiet place): Nose: Ripe on the nose, with dark fruit but more put together. There's also a bit of chocolatey earth.

Palate: Good ripeness with a bit of drying oak. A glowing joy of ripeness, like the kind of joy you see from someone that is living in the moment. This showed nice integration, especially with the fruit and earth.

I can't score this fairly. This showed a ripeness that reminded me of the Caymus this was had next to. That is not to say this is as sweet, but the fcking sweetness from the Caymus carried over, coating the palate a bit too much. I tried using some water but it didn't quite help (maybe sparkling would've done the job). One take away from this bottle though, is that it did not have that manipulated taste/texture, and to my relief, it was obvious why it didn't after the reveal.

Very fortunate to experience all 2021 Vice Versa wines blind along with CSIMM1161. The bottles had been open for about 5 hours and all the wines continued to get better with air. I managed to guess half of these correctly, but it’s quite a lift to distinguish them all. This vintage is more serious than 2019, with elevated tension, freshness, and overall complexity. These are not pop and pour, so if drinking in the next 10 years, I suggest a lot of decant time.

1. 2021 Platt Chardonnay: As usual, this wine spans the gap between old and new world styles. Lots of lemon driven character, it’s lively without being linear showing strikingly pure fruit and tons of freshness. 96

2. 2021 Platt Pinot: Very big and serious in this vintage with almost cab-like power. This is not a pinot for the faint of heart and will need some bottle time to come into its own. The more air it received, the more integrated it became, and by the finish its endless depth of flavor was complemented by more nuance and approachability. While it will not be mistaken for a Burgundy, it’s new world charm, focused power, and acidity to keep it crisp make for an excellent offering. 95

3. 2021 Beatrix: Nose is a bit muted with herbal and tobacco notes. Palate is firm displaying red cherries, tilled soil, and mineral driven flavors. Fresh and tight with a medium length finish, this will need some time to come into its own but should round into fine form. The vineyard quality is obvious throughout. 95

4. 2021 To Kalon: My favorite from the start. The power and elegance of this wine is dramatic and only gets more pronounced with time. Epically firm and concentrated, it displays unreal purity, freshness, and length. The class of the vineyard is on display here with its towering presence even amongst other great sites. 100

5. 2021 Cousins: This was more giving than the tightly wound To Kalon offerings. Gorgeous soaring aromatics give way to a generous palate of cherry fruit mixed with tobacco and earth driven flavors. Super well layered with regal tannins this is rich and very long. A wine you can get at a bit earlier than most of the other wines. 97

6. 2021 Spinning Plates: Yep, they snuck this one into the blind as well. Good thing I didn’t pick it as my favorite! As you might expect, this rides a little higher and is slightly rougher around the edges than most of the SVDs, but otherwise there isn’t a large drop-off in quality. It’s dark, fresh, well layered and showing significant tannic backbone at present. The 19 edition has more polish, but this displays more power and potential. 94

7. 2021 GIII: This presented more seriously than I expected from the GIII vineyard. Displays dark cherries, moss, integrated oak, hints of vanilla and a relatively austere mid-palate and finish. A very powerful wine with loads of potential. 96

8. 2021 LPV: This wine was showing the best of the group during the tasting. Everyone had it in their top 2-3 wines. I have a love/hate relationship with LPV, since it will be soaring and beautiful like it was during this tasting, and then shut down for a couple years. Just tremendous fruit intensity, with suave tight knit tannins, an endless core of chocolate and dank earth character with a massive, lingering finish. Can’t go wrong here. 98

9. 2021 Crane: Gorgeous fruit character with wonderful polish and incredible tannin management. This didn’t show the typical purple fruit with violets that comes with Crane, but had the sophistication, suave texture, and overall class to where I wasn’t super surprised it turned out to be Crane. More muted than LPV at this stage, we all know this will round into a near perfect wine. 98

10. 2021 Stelzner: Talk about different! The profile of this wine was about 180 degrees from all the others. We debated back and forth on whether it was Stelzner or Cousins. I ultimately picked Cousins based on half the grapes coming from Paso, but I was wrong! Meat drippings, char, burnt embers that are grainy and savory describe it. The fruit is black and very expessive, but you might think you are drinking a Syrah if you’re not paying attention. Lots of complexity and character, this wine was fun! 96

11. 2021 M7: Oh man, this wine fooled me at the beginning. It’s so utterly compact that I initially thought it didn’t have much to offer. By the second round tasting through the wines, I realized my error as this kept getting incrementally longer on the palate and let some of the amazing fruit quality peek out. It really makes sense that this is the top offering, since it is built for age and will slowly unfurl all those magnificent (yep, said it) layers over time. Epically pure with amazing precision, this may eventually eclipse To Kalon as my favorite. 99

12. 2021 Mysterons: Full bodied, with a generous core of mostly black fruit complimented by notes of tobacco and menthol, this displays a luxurious texture and serious power. More ready to drink than some of the other offerings, this may be a bottle you pop open while sitting on the Beckstoffer and M7 wines. 96
