  • The Blind Side - no, not football! (Chateau Simms): I am guessing the wine got at least 1-2 hours of slo-O before tasting, but honestly not sure about the bottle treatment/preparation before the tasting, i.e., it could be more.

This was part of a blind tasting that included the following wines:

    1. 2010 Abreu Thorevilos
    2. 2021 Scarecrow
    3. 2015 Colgin Tychson Hill
    4. 2019 Sassicaia
    5. 2019 Domaine Trapet Chapelle-Chambertin
    6. 2021 Bella Oaks La Genie
    7. 2014 Caymus Special Selection
    8. 2014 Vice Versa Magnificent 7

2014 VV Mag 7 - Yes, 94 is a very good score, but I admit I was disappointed on the reveal because I was expecting better! I believe this was the very first vintage of Mag 7.

I like this wine, and blind I wrote: "Very smooth wine with nice fruit and some tertiary character, but definitely leaning on the fruit side of the spectrum. Dark black, red and blue fruits with some forest floor, graphite, licorice and chocolate, with a hint of vanilla. This wine is in my wheelhouse." I gave it a 94 (and still give it a 94), but for the money and age, I expected perfection (or very close to it) and this wine did not deliver. It didn't seem like anything was wrong with the bottle, and 2014's, in general, are hitting their stride right now, so I am not sure why this didn't show better. Of course, I had not had the 2014 Mag 7 before, so maybe it just wasn't up to subsequent vintages. Like I said...a very good and very well made wine, but it didn't meet my other-worldly expectations of this wine!

  • Ripe on the nose. Dark, brooding and a bit sultry. Could have been a number of wines to be honest. When revealed, it was discussed that 2014 could have been made during the transition from one winemaker to another and this wine stylistically is not what we are used to from say 2016 onwards.

  • Eyes Wide Shut - Day 1 (A quiet place): Nose: Ripe on the nose, with dark fruit but more put together. There's also a bit of chocolatey earth.

Palate: Good ripeness with a bit of drying oak. A glowing joy of ripeness, like the kind of joy you see from someone that is living in the moment. This showed nice integration, especially with the fruit and earth.

I can't score this fairly. This showed a ripeness that reminded me of the Caymus this was had next to. That is not to say this is as sweet, but the fcking sweetness from the Caymus carried over, coating the palate a bit too much. I tried using some water but it didn't quite help (maybe sparkling would've done the job). One take away from this bottle though, is that it did not have that manipulated taste/texture, and to my relief, it was obvious why it didn't after the reveal.
