2015 Còlpetrone Montefalco RossoSangiovese Blend, Sangiovese more |
9/3/2021 - ben2e Likes this wine: 90 pointsLoved this wine. No it's not a big expensive complex wine but it nor is it a sappy alcoholic bomb or a cheap tasting wine that you're tire of. It's a medium bodied nicely structured balanced wine. Has the acid to support sausage and other full flavored foods. Tough to beat for the price or near the price. |

4/7/2021 - ben2e Likes this wine: 92 pointsWonderful. Perfect drinking at time of consumption. Had dense rich fruit. balance, structure and just enough mellower on the attack from what can be an overpowering wine young. |

3/23/2021 - ben2e Likes this wine: 89 pointsLight bodied but pleasant with a nice balance of acidity. Not cheap-tasting or fruity at all but nice structure and fruit flavor. Excellent for the price. I greatly enjoyed it. |

2016 Tenuta Col d'Orcia Rosso di MontalcinoSangiovese more |
3/12/2021 - ben2e Likes this wine: 91 pointsMedium body, light ripe berry flavors with a nice perfume nose. Found it absolutely delicious. Tons of bright fruit flavors. Not gobs of structure but it was absolutely delicious. Shared it with friends who were similarly delighted. It didn't taste to me like sangiovese. It had none of the bite and attack I'm used to but in a good way. |

3/10/2021 - ben2e Does not like this wine: 84 pointsUnappealing. Some funk on the nose and a tired fruit flavor. No idea how it got a high JS score. Not a pleasant wine. |

8/21/2020 - ben2e wrote: 88 pointsI wasn't as wild about this as Wine Advocate. I didn't like the spice notes in the palate and found the fruit forward and a bit heavy perhaps lacking some acid balance (sorry, my wine vocab isn't great). Not flawed but not my style. 2 people found this helpful, do you? Yes - No / Comments (1) |

2016 Argiano Non Confunditur Toscana IGTSuperTuscan Blend more |
5/20/2020 - ben2e wrote: 91 pointsI was pleasantly surprised. For the price I thought the quality was terrific. No hint of cheap juice here. Thoroughly enjoyable with no off-putting mineral or bad aftertaste. I'd be happy with a glass of this any time. I can only think the modest review scores are driven more by price. The fruit was balanced and at least reasonably dense. It had a bit less bite than say a Felsina Chianti but was also more enjoyable to just uncork and drink immediately without lamenting that you were compromising by just drinking a cheap bottle. Loved it. |

2015 Petra Potenti Cabernet Toscana IGTCabernet Sauvignon more |
4/16/2020 - ben2e wrote: 90 pointsDecent cabernet but with a hint of spice or eucalyptus that for me interrupted the fruit. Has good fruit concentration and structure. A fair value at this price point but I probably won't get more. |

2017 Petra Zingari Toscana IGTRed Blend more |
4/9/2020 - ben2e Does not like this wine: 87 pointsI found it fairly unsatisfying. It's not the junk you get in magnums at a cheap restaurant table to fill on your own but given the expert score, I was hopeful for more. It has some acid and structure but not tons of fruit concentration. Perhaps even a bit lean. |

2001 Conterno Fantino Barolo Sorì GinestraNebbiolo more |
3/2/2020 - ben2e Likes this wine: 92 pointsI liked it but in the realms of aged Barolo, it wasn't what I'd hoped. It was dry, dusty and was a rust color but otherwise unremarkable. Certainly not a let down but wasn't magic either after all that time. |

2017 Tiberio Montepulciano d'Abruzzomore |
2/23/2020 - ben2e Likes this wine: 91 pointsExcellent for the price - Rich structured bright red flavors typical of Montepulciano but has an extra few layers of fruit concentration and acid structure. I thought it was an excellent value for $20 and would have been happy had it been more costly. |

2006 Rocca di Montegrossi Geremia Toscana IGTRed Bordeaux Blend more |
10/3/2019 - ben2e Likes this wine: 96 pointsFantastic - big and rich. Huge fruit concentration with terrific balance to boot. It blew everyone away at dinner. As good a cab based wine as I've tasted in quite a while. |

2016 Domaine Pierre Usseglio & Fils LiracRed Rhone Blend more |
7/29/2019 - ben2e wrote: 89 pointsI admit I've only tried a few Lirac's The wine wasn't flawed but was extremely fruity and for my taste missing some acid to balance out the lush bright cherry fruit. It has a distinct ultra-ripe berry character unlike the other Rhones. If you're looking for a great value, this may be it but you'll want to try before you buy many. It got somewhat mixed reactions at my gathering. Nobody hated it nor did anyone love it. |

2014 Scott Paul Cellars Pinot Noir Ribbon Ridgemore |
6/21/2019 - ben2e Does not like this wine: 85 pointsDidn't care for this one. Was syrupy, fruity and just tasted like a low end pinot. Not flawed or anything I could tell. I liked the last Scott Paul I tried but this one was a disappointment. |

2016 La Ferme du Mont Côtes du Rhône Villages Le PonnantRed Rhone Blend more |
6/5/2019 - ben2e Likes this wine: 90 pointsI thoroughly enjoyed this wine. Had sufficient fruit concentration and structure to make me think I paid far more and got to enjoy that much better. Otherwise nice classic Southern Rhone flavors without the "cheap fruit bomb" taste. |

2016 Domaine des Escaravailles Rasteau La PonceRed Rhone Blend more |
5/25/2019 - ben2e Likes this wine: 92 pointsThought it was outstanding for the price. Had tons of fruit concentration and structure. It was a bit overpowering at first but with time it was just a mouthful of teeth-staining superconcentrated berries. Just like any Rhone blend it has it's own distinctive palate. I didn't get any of the manure flavors that people describe but I could understand if it's not in people's sweet spot. To me it was just lots more of a great thing and at a great price. |

2014 Vigneto Sgarzon Teroldego Rotalianomore |
5/18/2019 - ben2e Likes this wine: 92 pointsNothing like I've ever tasted. Had bright fruits (cherry, rabpsberry) but with an acidic bite suggesting to me some aging is in order. Like the wine cliche, this one really was more enjoyable after an hour or so. That bite softened and I could enjoy the wine far more. Otherwise, it's difficult to describe as it's unlike any other varietal. It's fairly dense in color and concentration and I'm tempted to leave the other bottles several years. It's super fragrant but has more of an attack on the palate then a pinot or grenache based wine. |

2016 Felton Road Pinot Noir CalvertCentral Otago more |
5/14/2019 - ben2e wrote: 89 pointsI liked it but was hoping for more given the enthusiastic scores. To me it was a solid but unremarkable pinot. Not sweet or fruity nor was it what I'd expect from a similarly priced Willamette Valley offering. I don't think anyone would be at all disappointed. It had a slightly acidic bite with what I think of as a classic American West Coast pinot nose and pallet. |

2016 M. Chapoutier Côtes du Roussillon Villages Domaine de Bila-Haut L'EsquerdaSyrah Blend, Syrah more |
1/24/2019 - ben2e wrote: 90 pointsFor the cost it's hard to find fault. The wine had structure, fruit concentration and balance. It was powerful and full of fragrance of berries. I've had quite a few Rhone's but not many from Roussillon. It had a difficult to describe fruit palate with a distinctive regional spice so it's not quite a substitute for a Southern Rhone if that's what your heart is set on. I admit I had to try it given it's rating and price but that spice/character makes it hard for me to want more. Just not my palate. I'd highly recommend you try it though. |

11/10/2018 - ben2e Does not like this wine: 87 pointsMedium body and somewhat fruity. Thought it was just ok which was disappointing considering the price point. Not much structure. Had a spicy component which distracted from the fruit. Fellow drinker agreed. |
