  • Popped and poured into a Grassl Cru. Closed with a DIAM 5.
Warm effusive nose of vaguely candied red fruit (something of a similar tenor to what I picked up on the last Goodfellow Pinot), but with strong herbs and warm spices such that this is a ringer for an amaro, but less sweet.

There is a silky entry to the palate, though I am left wanting just a little more stuffing; it feels just slightly thin. The fruit lead is cranberry though with time this softens to cherry. A faint hint of vanilla emerges but is quickly swallowed by layers of herbs and a hotter characteristic, like cinnamon, then wet earth and back to fruit again. The herb and spice leads me to think there is a notable percentage of whole clusters. The acid is slightly pointed, again something I felt about the last Goodfellow I had. The result is it feels lifted but maybe a tad disjointed. Over time in the air this may soften, but this is an excellent bottle as it stands.

90 minutes in, the wine fleshed out well and though never plush, was certainly not anemic. The acid too folded in and felt of a piece with the rest, and I expect this will improve on day 2, maybe even 3.

  • Splash decanted for a couple of hours. Red fruit, raspberry cranberry, baking spice, more ripe than expected and a bit of heat. Crowd pleasing and ready to go.

NOSE: very pretty: florals at the front, red fruits behind; medium+ expressiveness.

BODY: pinkish/purple/ruby color of light depth, with a hint of bricking at the edge; light bodied; Diam 5 closure.

TASTE: very light flavor initially; slightly bitter, with herbal red fruits -- red currant and very light raspberry; hint of very fine tannins still present; medium-low to medium acidity; 14.2% alc., and it's noticeable; the fruit is noticeably ripe, notwithstanding its lightweight presentation; paired well with Flannery beef tenderloin seasoned only with salt and green peppercorn rub; very pretty and elegant; lighter than I prefer; I'd like more acid, fruit, or both, but there's nonetheless a spot for a wine like this in my cellar --- no point in having monochromatic holdings.

  • Thin looking appearance. Raspberry, cherry, stemmy aroma. Surprisingly full texture. M acidity, m tannin. A fairly peppery wine and a little hot. I think it’s really quite tasty but there is a fairly prominent astringent note. Nice complexity. I think this is in the zone.

  • Medium-intensity garnet color. Nose of strawberry tart, raspberry, and something spicy in the background. Medium-light body, medium acid, powdery tannins. Raspberries on the front palate picking up a some mint mid-palate along with a chalkiness similar to Flintstones vitamins that lingered through the finish. I did not find the finish pleasant, though it improved with more air time.
