4/22/2023 - bcollins wrote: NRThis really is far better than it has any right to be. Nicely but certainly not overly ripe; acidic enough but not too much; completely clean but not anonymous. A beautifuly balanced humble village Burgundy. Cost tuppence ha'penny at the domaine about a dozen years ago. Back in the days when you could rock up and buy everything, right up to the Clos St Denis, and load up the back of the car. |

If I had more I'd give it 2-3 more years for the oak to integrate just a little more before opening the others but other than that everything is here; glorious quality of fruit with density and weight but not at all ponderous or flabby. Tremendous. |

10/21/2022 - bcollins wrote: NRI'm tremendously fond of this wine. Enough so that after drinking the first bottle (of six) about three years ago I went back and got 12 more. They are getting slowly better with time. Very nice balance, elegant without being austere, and still weighty enough for genuine interest but not in the least bit ponderous. Everything in the right place (including the 12.8% alcohol!) |

9/30/2022 - bcollins wrote: NRThoroughly enjoyed this. I'm generally more of a fan of Oregon Chardonnay than Pinot but this was nicely restrained, savoury, with a good acidic backbone and tasting no hotter than its labelled 13% alcohol. Unsure about extended ageing but it's just right about now so why wait. |

11/24/2021 - bcollins wrote: NRIt's interesting to see a few negative reviews on this wine. I've just finished the fourth of a case (of 12) and so far they have been uniformly, to my taste, glorious, although obviously taste is a very personal thing. My TN for a previous bottle was as follows, and it applies equally to this one: "This is kick-ass. Lean, precise, and fresh as a daisy. Serious length without even the slightest hint of being "obvious" or forced, while still retaining personality in spades. 13% alcohol. Ten left and absolutely no hurry whatsoever. Reminds me somewhat of Stony Hill (California) or Arterberry Maresh (Oregon), one of which I'll pull out tomorrow I think. I used to roll my eyes a bit at New World chardonnay, but not for a while now." |

Much as I adore Coeur in general, ten to fifteen years of age appears to be the sweet spot - it doesn't last forever. I think I'd better hurry up with the 2002s as well. 7/5/2019 - bcollins wrote: NRCan't keep my hands off these - this was the fifth of a sixpack and they've all been utterly delicious. Clean and lean without being mean. Definitely a slight lick of new oak in here but certainly not excessive; alcohol kept in check and lovely bright acidity. Wife was out last night so I opened one of these on my own and it slipped down in no time at all. |

2015 Az. Ag. Antoniotti Odilio BramaterraNebbiolo more |
3/24/2019 - bcollins wrote: NRDelicious - characteristically Nebbiolo and there is plenty of tannic structure, but it's no monolithic monster - under the savoury earthiness is plenty of clean, bright fruit to make it more than drinkable already. Similar in price to, say, a decent Langhe Nebbiolo but quite a lot more interesting than most. Yes, it's young, but having opened the first of a case last week I came back to open another yesterday with the same impression, and promptly picked up another two dozen. The sort of wine that wine-geeks can enjoy hugely while still being easily approachable by civilians. |

They've been consistently outstanding for the price - a perfect "daily drinker" - just serious enough to be genuinely interesting rather than something to slurp-and-forget, but without leaving you wishing you'd left them in the cellar for another five years. Time to order a couple of dozen of the 2016 to replace them... |

6/23/2018 - bcollins wrote: NRThis was a delicious, elegant, somewhat simple but really nicely put together bottle. It's certainly not profound but at the price point you wouldn't expect that; however everything is in harmony, there are no spiky edges, and it's drinking beautifully right now. I don't doubt that this would last for 20 years if you wanted to keep it that long, but I'm not sure it'd ever deliver significantly more than it does today. First of a dozen; I expect we'll get through the rest over the next 2-3 years. |

12/23/2017 - bcollins wrote: NRDecanted for an hour and a half; first of a case. This bottle is in a tremendous place right now and far more satisfying than a 2004 with identical provenance a few weeks ago. There's power, structure and density, but the acidity, balance and restrained alcohol mean it's not ponderous at all. Just enough almost Cornas-like wildness to add complexity to what is really a very classical "proper" syrah. We very nearly immediately popped another bottle. I'm sure this will last as long as you like but on this showing it's certainly no waste to open a bottle now. Do you find this review helpful? Yes - No / Comments (5) |

10/28/2017 - bcollins wrote: NROutstandingly good. What I'm looking for in nebbiolo is balance between the iron fist of a proper tannic structure and the velvet glove of ethereal, floral gorgeousness. Too much of the former and it's monolithic and boring; too much of the latter and it's frivolous and insubstantial. This is right bang on the money. Sure, it'll last another 15 years, but why wait. |

NV Laherte Frères Champagne Premier Cru Extra Brut Les Longues VoyesPinot Noir more |
12/17/2016 - bcollins wrote: NR100% Pinot Noir from the a parcel of Laherte's vines in the Montagne de Reims, about 20 miles from their Chavot base. Although technically an NV, this is entirely from the 2012 vintage; as seems to be fairly common practice these days, a "lot number" on the label gives the vintage details. This is oak-fermented but the oak is not particularly apparent and certainly not intrusive. No malo. Dosage about 4g/l. Exuberant but fine mousse, plenty of extract. Despite the low dosage I suspect this has the stuffing and balance to age fairly well, but it's drinking very nicely right now. 36 Euros from the cellar door last month. Would buy again. A very interesting producer imo, and all the better for not dogmatically going zero dosage as so many do these days - the low dosage works extremely well. Thank you Thierry for an excellent visit! |

11/19/2016 - bcollins wrote: NRYet another stellar showing from this wine - these seem to be getting even better with just a little more age. Taut and precise but to the point of elegance rather than austerity. Very fine mousse - almost perle-like pressure on opening - but more persistent than that implies. This bottle prompted an email asking if they have any stocks left - sadly not, but they've produced this cuvee in the top-notch 2012 vintage, so I've booked an impromptu visit next week to pick some up... |

11/13/2016 - bcollins wrote: NRI knew I had a bunch of these buried in the cellar, but it took a re-organising to find them. I think this was the first vintage of PYCM I bought, other than a few after-market purchases since. This still tastes very young; the oak is prominent, but not excessively intrusive. There a slight viscosity but otherwise this is almost more Chablis than Meursault; great acidity, no flabbiness, real drive and precision. Honestly, it's brilliant (and no sign of premox!); no hurry to drink up at all. |

12/6/2013 - bcollins wrote: NRThis is tremendous. At a recent visit to the cellar door to pick up the delicious "basic" NV rosé, we picked up half a dozen of this, the "top" cuvee. We had a last minute and very rushed lunchtime appointment so didn't have time to taste in advance but you can't go all that far wrong with 2008s from decent producers (and it's our wedding year, too.) Based on some commentary elsewhere I was expecting a bit of a bruiser with plenty of oak waiting to integrate, but not at all - this is precise, minerally and delicious, with a pinpoint mousse and bags of class. Now I need to find a weekend to drive back and fill up the car with a selection of all their wines - this is the most expensive in the lineup, but is under 27 Euros a bottle. I've been a fan of the rosé for a while but never seen the other wines before; on this showing, Savès are rapidly becoming my go-to affordable Champagne grower. Do you find this review helpful? 10/5/2011 - bcollins wrote: NRA light and elegant style of Cote Rotie; cool, low alcohol (12.5%) and very traditional in terms of being the diametric opposite of a fruit-bomb. Good secondary development and a lovely understated complexity - I can't agree at all with other reviewers who've dismissed this as simple; lightweight and simple are not synonyms. I very much regret having sold six of this case before trying any as a result of several dismissive reviews; this was the first of the remaining six that I've opened and I wish I now had 11 left rather than 5. |

10/5/2011 - bcollins wrote: NRLovely traditional riesling from the currently rather unfashionable (compared to Mosel/Nahe) Rheinhessen. Extremely fresh, despite the slightly variable vintage reputation; sweetness is definitely in the genuine spatlese bracket rather than being a mini-auslese as so many can be these days. Light and elegant, hints of pears as well as limes and minerals, with just enough zippy acidity. A perfect aperitif. |
