Big, Bold, high elevation Napa. It was okay. tannins were inside out. Highvily Extracted. Blind, It tasted young, like a 2020 vintage wine . Disliked by the Francophiles in the group. Could age another 10-15 years easily. Otherwise, give a few hours to decant.

peaked at last CT note from 2009. agree with the apple cider note - still there, along with tree nut, maple, and chamomile simmered with honey. Had a sip from the glass and the rest was over vanilla ice cream. Lovely with dessert. Not enough acid (and or too syrupy) for stand alone, Im afraid. And Im generally pretty forgiving. A bit reminiscent of pedro ximenez I’m afraid (ie madierized and merely medium acidity).

primary flavor heavy. ripping acid. well balance grapefruit rind, limoncello, dried apricot, white cherry, almond, and pastry. Solid more approachable (and more enjoyable) than the 1995 champagne we had a few days ago 🤷‍♂️ fraction of the price. Guess our sparkling palettes aren't refined.

almost no atmospheres of pressure left (cork BARELY expanded on opening) had on xmas eve. Sarahs birthyear bottle. so sentimental bonus point given. Aged notes with cheese notes surprisingly mono-dimensional with almonds predominant: but surprising dearth of butter/toast notes. less surprisingly no primary fruit beyond a shadow of green apple / stoney citrus.

Im not too well versed in vintage Champagnes but I’d say Drink up!

deep Bronze in color (darker hue than a 1993 Zind we had this week) (and deeper color than some Roses) Aromatically honeycomb, jasmine, and a glimpse of kerosene. Nice, some residual sugar, but nice with dinner. Drink up!

dark blossom, drank with some home made Cheese burgers

Pop n pour, Hated myself for it, but I told people it would “blossom” with some air, sure enough, it did.
Inky in color, plush modern
Med aromatic intensity - ripe black plum, smoke, plush boysenberry, blackberry, topsoil, black olive, licorice,
black , bay leaves, peppercorn, med+/high tannin, med+ acidity , alcohol 15.5% - legs visible, but hides the alcohol incredibly well. Well balanced (somehow!!)

Great young vine blend!

horizontal Rutherford red blind tasting of 2011 mascot vs 2011 futo ov. Drank both w/ dinner of beef stroganoff.

common notes for both:
Dark ruby, little/no bricking, both were very modern. aromatic intensity of both was med+. acidity of both was med+. And both showed hints of blackberry, black currant, and cedar.

Mascot Blend -

at first pour the two Rutherfords were indistinguishable. by 10 minute mark, the futo showed more topsoil, and the Mascot stayed cleaner, allbeit “dustier”. Wine showed a black fruit core high + tannin (nearing “backwards”), elements of cedar + blackberry spice, young.Most tannic wines Ive had since a truly backwards 2009 barolo half a year back.

Wine tasted youthful - 5-10 yrs old. I dont know how long it will hold might be 3-5 years or might plateau for several decades!! Wish we had more to see. I havent popped a harlan or promontory but their mascot knows how to sell it! For an off year, wicked good juice.

Blind Futo notes - . by 10 minute mark, the futo showed some barnyard funk, wet topsoil, more restrained fruit, slightly greener tobacco aroma, over medium + tannins (in hindsight it was the cab franc shining thru). Mom and Robin prefered this one. Sarah and I liked both, but leaned towards the pure fruit notes on the Mascot. Likely Drink by 2027-2030

agree with others. huge wine. its 15.2% alc, drinks as mid 14s%. balanced tropical chard notes predominate over rhone varietals. oak treatment was a tad heavy handed. Went well with charcuterie. not sure if worth Price of admission

better than the last few birth year bottles.

possibly my WOTY. current on a perfect plateau. complex tertiary flavors intermingle the red black currant, fig, aged leather . med+/high acidity, med+/high tannin. Elegant (obviously premium) cool climate meritage.

objectively, Atleast a 96. subjectively, I think it earns 98 pts. (100 considering sentimental value) Figured I’d split the difference and give a 97.

I have a few more in the cellar. Had Planned to drink thru 2028. Seems about right to me. Might push up to 2027 just because really seems to be singing now. Curious to see what time will do for em.
