1 Red Schooner Voyage 1 (Caymus Vineyards)
WHEW. OK. Got some? Good. You shoulda got more. :-) Here's the EPIC story of this lucky break: First off, we'd like to give a shout out to Napa Valley--- we love you! If we didn't live here (and grow up here), you probably wouldn't get these one-of-a-kind wines and deals we so cherish. OK. RED SCHOONER! What Caymus did was THIS --- they went to Argentina. They found high-end, high-elevation vineyards of the BEST grape there -- Malbec. They brought them back to Caymus (cool, right??) here in Napa, and crushed them and made the wine in the much-loved Caymus style. BIG, bold, and sexy. Then they let it chill out for a few years (this vintage is 2010, although they can't put that on the label....more on that below) in French oak and rested it at the winery until they felt it was ready. Then WE got to work getting some. The wine, Red Schooner, is clearly going to be a part of the Caymus repertoire of international wines. This one, the DEBUT, is a TINY amount -- and you are finding it here first at Last Bottle. Because of wine labeling laws, the bottle cannot bear a vintage or other information we're used to, because the grapes literally came from another country. Those guys at Caymus are adventurers, man!! So -- think of this as a $75+ Malbec. Think of it as a gorgeous, powerful, crazy-good Malbec. Think that Caymus lushness and mouth coating texture married with high-elevation, Andes Mountains Malbec. SO cool! Dense blueberry, chocolate, leather, purple flowers and huge, rich mid-palate...not overly done but still insanely drinkable, soft tannins and a long, juicy, spicy finish. A MUST for Caymus fans...this is so rare and unusual...and delicious...you cannot go wrong!!!! Lastly ------- if you actually read this far without buying any.....hurry up!!

2012 Reuling Vineyard Pinot Noir

Sonoma Coast more

Top notes of floral and spice nuances add elegance to the essence of dark berry fruit suffused nose. There is good volume to the suave, concentrated and ripe middle weight flavors that are supported by phenolically mature tannins on the firm, serious and powerful finish. This is a big, powerful and robust effort but not really a rustic one that will require plenty of patience; either that or a big steak or other dish that can help buffer the substantial tannins! Note that this is very well done in its style and if you enjoy power pinot then this is well worth checking out. (The Burghound)

2008 Liquid Sky Cabernet Sauvignon

Sonoma Valley more

12/10/2015 - Wino4fun wrote: NR

The nearly black pure Cabernet Sauvignon bursts with aromas of boysenberry and black cherry cordial, and opens to cascades of fresh blueberry, sweet and toasty blackberry pie, minerals, and ripe pomegranate. The palate is bright and lively, layered with the flavors of sweet tobacco, violets, dried cranberry, graphite, and savory sage, supported by a velvety texture and a long lingering finish of toasted walnut and dried fruit. Smooth and rich, it has the backbone to support many years of enjoyment.

This is the definition of crowd-pleaser. Warm, wonderful, balanced, round, silky, toasty and complex...honestly if you put a glass in front of us and told us to guess, we'd probably just say: "$60 Cabernet"! Loads of warm berry flavors, toasty, rich French oak, a touch of licorice and mineral, and a long, silky, elegant finish.

2011 William Knuttel Winery Pinot Noir Épée Cuvée

Russian River Valley more

12/3/2015 - Wino4fun wrote: NR

OK - here's the scoop: William Knuttel is the winemaking Jedi-master behind two legends -- SAINTSBURY (1983-1996) and CHALK HILL (1996-2003). With his own brand, he crafts small quantities of finesse-filled, precise, brilliant pinot. This one is from the Rued Mt. Olivet vineyard, just off of River Road in the beating heart of Russian River --- pinot paradise. "Seamless" is a great word for this wine (we think our price is seamless, too) -- no scratchy edges, just pure, complex, elegant wine with tons of fine berries, Asian spices, earth, cranberry, and mineral, that just floats across your tongue like some magic elixir. THAT is what we're talkin' about!

2005 Breckenridge Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Jen Mar Vineyard

St. Helena more

11/25/2015 - Wino4fun wrote: NR

100% Cabernet Sauvignon made by much-respected consultant Bruce Devlin. This unanimously agreed-upon drop-dead KILLER 2005 vintage was sourced from a tiny 2.5 acre vineyard in St. Helena planted 25 years ago. Parker recently said in a 2005 retrospective tasting: "At ten years of age, the wines are showing fabulously well, and many of the wines are far greater than I ever anticipated. The results of these tastings were truly stunning, and this 2005 vintage now deserves to be included with the other great vintages of the first decade of the 21st century, 2001, 2002 and 2007 - it is that special. The wines at age ten are remarkably fresh and youthful, yet compelling, powerful and multidimensional."
When WE popped the cork on this, the Cabernet nose came blasting out of the heavy glass bottle like American Pharaoh at the Derby. Damn! Black currant liqueur, violets, mint, cigar box, cherry pie....all of that and more is on the palate, and with age this has softened into a sexy, heavenly, voluptuously textured wine. Creamy, spicy, long and lasting. SO GOOD!!

2012 Roessler Pinot Noir Black Pine

Anderson Valley more

11/25/2015 - Wino4fun wrote: NR

Roger Roessler (R2)! A pinot noir winemaking master, he sold his winery to HALL some years back to focus on Russian River pinot. R2 is his newest project with winemaker Drew Huffine (resume includes KOSTA BROWNE, DUMOL, AUTEUR, COPAIN, TUCK BECKSTOFFER.....!!) with a focus on world-class Pinot. Add to that the fact that many of the grapes sourced for this include some much-coveted and not-spoken-of-other-than-in-hushed-tones vineyards used by Kosta-Browne and other rock-star-ish producers. What we're saying is: CARPE DIEM while we have it! We did this for you! Lastly -- the joyous deliciousness that is this charming, complex and crowd-pleasing bottle of divine fermented-ness. ONE fruit defines this pinot --- black cherry. Everything else is just the proverbial cherry on top. Cinnamon, clove, and cola pop up but it's all about the silky, lush, round texture...lovely balance, softness and long, fruity, spicy finish...truly a pleasure to drink.

6 L'Abbe Dine Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2014
Never will you ever feel the same way about a Cotes du This masterpiece from L'Abbe Dine, whose Chateauneuf we are so deeply in love with, is such a monumental bargain (even at its release price), such a staggeringly juicy, layered, charm-your-pants-off wine, you will wonder how you ever got through a Friday night without it. REALLY. It's all that. And the price!! Nathalie Reynaud is an up-and-coming star in Chateauneuf and we are so lucky to have found her a few years back, tasting wine in her half-finished, concrete winemaking facility near the village. Basically a "baby Chateauneuf", this is mostly old-vine Grenache - a rich, juicy powerful wine with huge aromatics of violets, strawberry liqueur, raspberry and sweet herbs. Insanely charming - her best yet.

Here is the story! French wine geeks know Chateau Negly, a highly-rated, world-class bargain. The consulting winemaker there (Claude Gros) is the man behind this wine and it is STUNNING, wonderfully-made, powerful but accessible Rhone-styled goodness. Astoundingly delicious for the $$!! Purple-dark fruit perfume, anise, fruitcake, cloves and sweet grilled herbs all mix it up here, and the palate is rich and textured and long, long, long!! Wow!
