4/2/2024 - GaryF Likes this wine: 91 pointsNot what I expected at all. Mourvèdre—you’re thinking huge, inky, high alcohol. This wine was lighter than most Pinot Noirs I’ve seen—incredibly surprising. Clear at the edges and fully translucent. The nose is bright with light fruit, but the palate has significant acidity and focused strawberry and red cherry notes. This wine is closer to a Pinot than any other Mourvèdre I’ve ever had before. In fact, it’s better at being a Pinot than most Cali wines I’ve had. Loved it. Wish I had more. |

The label prominently mentions schist soil, do I really smell the terroir or am I imagining this? Who knows or cares? The palate is light when considering it’s a 14% alcohol wine. Drying tannins with notes similar to the nose. Acidity keeps the wine fresh. Will buy a few more at the really low Grocery Outlet price. |

Corked it and tossed in the fridge for a couple days and tried it again with a smoked rib roast. The palate now matches the nose and has filled its red fruit promise. Solid for the low price. |

Palate surprises with some tannic grip and slight bite from alcohol and acids. Tart red fruit and plums round out the medium weight mouth feel. Seems lighter than it’s 14% alcohol. Enjoying this solid QPR wine. |

So, I fumble at something that sounds “Tasting Note” worthy. I’ll give it a try though I don’t really care at this point tonight. My son came home from UCLA today, a pleasant visit from my freshman. My wife asked what he wanted her to cook, and he chose the Argentine beef milanesas my mom used to make. I mention this humble brag to give context to why I chose this wine. I had begun the night with a Provençal rose that really drank better than it should considering the price I paid; then, I moved unto this wine with dinner. So, out comes this barbera, and it was a pleasant surprise—again, I’m cheap and spend the least possible: rosemary and other herbs on the nose and medium weighted palate balanced—or is that juxtaposed?—by tart red berries and dried fruit. The acidity plays well with food and the tannins know their place. I’m personifying sensations know; I should stop. Cheers |
