Definitely detect the markers of a first rate SRH Pinot on the nose and palate, but it is largely devoid of fruit at 7 years old and the elements of earthiness and mustiness dominate. The finish is lasting but a bit bitter. Needs to be accompanied by food.

Cherry red color, garnet core, watery rim. No sign of bricking.
Cherry cola on the nose, vanilla and then strawberry/rhubarb pie, eucalyptus and allspice as it opened up.
Bright acidity - fresh as a daisy. Nice structure, fine tannins. Layered, the same strawberry/rhubarb pie found on the nose that overtakes initial cherry and cola notes with air. Just a delicious wine with plenty more time left.

Mellow and plush with lots of sweet oak and black fruit. This is a solid weekday sipper.

Aromas of blackberry jam, black cherry, vanilla, salted caramel, brown sugar, cinnamon, baking spices, and leather.

Palate is full and round with juicy fruit low-medium acidity, silty tannins, and a long finish. Drink or hold.

Pours a dark non-opaque ruby, the nose features dark cherry, plum, baking spices, and mineral. On the palate, cinnamon and nutmeg are noticeable, with ample acidity. A little less impressive than other Sierra Madre vineyard pinot noir that we've had, but very nice.

Seemed a bit light tonight but still nice. We drank this one after a bigger styled wine so it's more delicate nuances we're not as noticeable.

This is a medium, clear straw yellow colored wine. I get apple, lemon, pear, peach, and vanilla on the palate. This is an ample bodied wine with a velvety consistency. The oak is there, but it's judiciously used. The finish is clean. The structure is consistent with flowing balance. The alcohol is at 13.3% which means, to me, that these grapes were picked a the perfect ripeness. I would normally only say this about the best white Burgundies, but this wine is elegant. This wine is from a great vineyard, and the wine maker has done a great job. I'm so glad that I bought a full case. This is probably my highest rated wine for less than $30 a bottle.

Retail $55? Under cork. I have been a fan of Byron's wines for quite some time now and upon one visit to "his" winery, he indicated that he had this Syrah (going on 7 years old at that point) on "sale" for about 30% off. And so I bit. It was not a willy-nilly adventure since I had trusted Byron as a wine maker for years. No, it was more of a question of the variety: Syrah. Although I have never explicitly asked, I am pretty sure that Byron sees himself as a bit of a Pinot wunderkind and thus Syrah was a deviant, a departure, a shot in the dark at a different variety. And. It. Works. Dark in the glass with dark berry fruit, some pizzaz, and a whole lot of verve. Whoa. Black fruit (blackberry [duh], blueberry, cassis) dominates the nose, but there is also a spicy aspect that I normally don't associate with Pinot Noir. Oh wait, yeah, this is a Syrah. Yeah. There is some coffee, a bit of earth, some fresh tobacco leaf, and whoa. This is much better than I remember the first bottle. THe palate is still fruity, but more reserved than one would expect from a Sonoma Syrah. Great acidity and a killer finish round out this wine. Whoa.

Deepish red center, red rim with some signs of age.
Sweet red cherries, touch of smoke and sandalwood, polished wood.
Smooth and a little rich, cherries and ripe plums, a little briar, vine stems, modest acidity, integrated oak, very good finish.
Excellent Pinot that is good drinking now, great value at $25.

ABV: 13.2%. I really wasn't sure how this wine was going to show at such a young age (approximately 6 years old), but it continues to bloom a hour after opening. There's a beautifully balanced bouquet on the nose with dark cherries, raspberries, pomegranate, rhubarb, and potpourri. Plenty of fruit on the mid-palate, but the acid could use some more time to integrate itself with the wine. The plesant finish lingers for quite a while, but I think this wine can use some more time in the cellar (perhaps until the 10-year mark in 2026). This wine has a lot of potential so being patient should return a big reward.

10/30/2022 - Raised the score by one point. 24 hours later, the nose on this wine has a little bit of that cola profile going on. The acidity has integrated a little more overnight, but the youthfulness of this wine is still showing. I definitely recommend that you keep this bottle for a while longer because it should evolve into an amazing drink with a few more years in the cellar.
