2018 Pimpernel Vineyards Pinot Noir Four

Yarra Valley more

5/3/2024 - sirpat00 wrote: 93 points

Meaty base, dried herbs, pyrazine notes, beautiful accents of rhubarb on top of the cherry fruit, Asian spice and raw vanilla beans. Almost Syrah-like. Structured palate, muscular with good depth and density.

2016 Pimpernel Vineyards Pinot Noir Two

Drink alongside Pimpernel Pinot Noir Two. No. One, pursues an elegant style with minimal intervention, where No. Two is the antithesis of One with emphasis on secondary character expression.

Cork popped on both say 45 mins prior to drinking.

One was my favourite, although the room seemed to like Two better. Both were what I think of typical Yarra Valley Pinot, dark baked/stewed fruits, savoury and a touch of fungal / dry earthiness to them.

One seemed lighter, whiff of prettiness, baked fruits and less weight to the body.
Two was more prominent in descriptors, darker stewed fruits and more generous in body.

Both I thought were aging well and quite enjoyable, but I’d say in their drinking windows.

The colour has gone rusty but the wine is clear and bright, reminds me of old Barolo. Similar nose to Barolo with cherries, dried flowers, and a savoury umami character.

On the palate there's tart raspberry and cherry fruit, a little stalky greenness and savoury meatiness. Given time in the glass the nose started to show a bit of cola. Tannins have fully softened but there's still firm acid here.
Old bottles are always a roll of the dice but this one was definitely a win.

From a cooler year, this has a beautiful texture, dark fruit with moderate pepper after 20 months on oak.
Acidity in perfect balance

Love it

March 3. With dinner. Evolution over a couple of hours lifts this up a couple of notches over an admittedly high bar from tasting at the cellar door. Maybe it’s the (barely noticeable) 14.5% abv catching up with me, more likely the rounded tannins and sharp blackcurrants singing in harmony that tempt me to try writing poetry

I am surprised by the Marsanne quality in the Yarra, and this is a prime example

5 years old, this has still a long way to go.

Floral and lemon on nose, lemon curd and wax on palate, acidity tamed by months in oak. Harmonious

48, 29, 22, 1% muscat

16 months in barrel and the muscat inclusion (not identifiable as an individual element, just making a significant contribution in complexity to the blend) make for a delight.
Meaty, smooth ripe spice, inviting tannic structure, long and complex, a question whether I want to smell it or chew it

Less powerful, more refined, than its younger sibling.

Savoury and earthy elements melding well with dark sweet cherries, some complexity still developing. 12 months on oak has left a supple tannin underpinning.
Medium body

Youthful looking

Restrained nose of honeysuckle and apricot

Acidity is a foil to the typical v texture, cutting the unctuous levels, with a dry edge to the honey and spice

Very, very long

Tasted after a half hour decant. Pale ruby in colour with a garnet hue & lovely aromas of initially earthy forest floor transitioning to strawberry & blossoms. On the palate, medium bodied tart & very juicy red fruit, strawberry, sour cherry, both earthy & floral, potpourri, clove/spice, cotton candy, high acidity, low soft tannins with a long finish to sour cherry, pepper & a hint of milk chocolate. This is balanced, complex, elegant wine, & tastes exactly as Pinot Noir should! Very well done!

{cork, 13.3%} Looking its age, with a hint of brick at the rim. Cured meat on the nose, with compost, rotting strawberries. Attractive. Palate maintains that decaying fruit character, but also laced with cedary, fumy oak, an alcoholic warmth, medium acid, and low powdery tannins. It's medium/full-bodied for pinot, certainly, but with air picks up a certain volatile quality too. Pretty much at peak, in my view. Top notch cork, too.

Ahoy there Captain Schtiffie! Pinot Noir on the horizon.

Barely have these words passed my lips than my my Stortebeker self leaps into action. This is a Pinot for a pirate. I could easily walk the length of 11 men after being beheaded, such is the inspiring character of this fine Oz Pinot. The headsman would not trip me.

In a more contemplative moment, I refer to my last note on this wine and ponder the matter of Pinot, be it Burgundy or Newt World. Lots of questions. Is the stature of Pinot largely derived from its ability to ripen in a cooler epoch and to be less objectionable than many of its fellows? I do wonder. Is the reputation of Pinot as a Noble Variety merited today? I find both Sangiovese and Nebbiolo more complex as grapes and capable of giving as much to my mind and my emotions. Pinot tends to need oak to add things that these two Italian varieties do without help.

Yet I love Pinot. The sour aspects, the roasted beetroot notes all draw me in. I really like the lightness of being combined with depth that comes from Pinot in a good site. Sometimes I do think that everything I like about Pinot I get from Barolo, at half the price and with so much more complexity and reliability. But then I have a fine Pinot and I am reminded that all that is true, but Neb is not Pinot and I do love both. It reminds me of the argument over whether Townes van Zandt or Guy Clarke was the greater song writer. Lots of points in common between the two (especially their muse, Susanna) yet also no question the two were very different. I can't imagine drinking one and not the other and I can't imagine listening to one and not the other. Right now I am feeling 'A Song For' but tomorrow I know it will be 'Dublin Blues'. Stortebeker me is just loving this rampant Pinot and who cares about tomorrow?
