2004 Thorn-Clarke Shiraz Shotfire (Ridge)Barossa more |
3/28/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 79 pointsI'd been curious to try this for a while, had seen a lot of buzz about the Shotfire and it was talked up pretty heavily by the retailer, but I'll be honest, I was pretty disappointed. I didn't give this a decant, which would have likely helped the initial impression which was dominated by a palate of Cherry, but not the tasty Black cherry, this was Ludens cough drops or cherry flavored codine cough syrup from when I was a kid. The nose had some classic Shiraz elements on first night, but went very one dimensional on night two, as did the palate that gave up the cough syrup for a very acid forward palate with only minimal red fruit. Maybe a bad bottle, but I just simply didn't see the buzz this one garners. 50+5+10+8+6 = 79 |

2003 K Vintners Syrah Lucky No. 7Walla Walla Valley more |
3/13/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 85 pointsOpened from cellar, 1/2 hour in-glass decant. Strong blood-ruby color, nose with almost a micro hint of Brett (odd in a Syrah?), cut sweet grass, anise, raspberry. Bit acidic on the palate, flavors blueberry, black cherry, cedar, even a hint of tar on first opening but went away. Some almost gamey and barnyard-like flavors though the meal and drinking solo, but seems to be lacking something in the mid-palate and finish. My guess is 3-5 year drinking window at this point, but I might just finish off my other two early as I'm not convinced this is going to get better. 50+5+13+10+7=85 |

2005 Trust Syrah Walla Walla Valleymore |
3/9/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 89 pointsInteresting enough I pretty much echo the previous tasters notes. Great Purple-Garnet color. Nose was full on Tar and Charred Bacon primary tones, with black raspberry secondary wiffs. I loved the palate, nice departure from some of the candied fruit Syrah, this Trust having a lot of the same components of Bacon Fat, Tar, Boysenberry, Cherry Pie (in roughly that predominance). A flash of alcohol on the back palate, and well integrated tannins, good overall balance, will save my other bottle for a couple years. Kudos to Steve! |

3/6/2009 - Hollowine wrote: 82 pointsOnly bottle from this producer, was a gift from a past employee. Cork looked good, little penetration and easily removed. Color was deep garnet red, very dark and clear of sediment. Nose was very oaky at first, settled down to red and black fruits, a bit of pencil lead, some spiciness I can't quite name. Palate was very weak at first, 30 min in glass improved to cherry, steel, bit of vanilla and raspberry, paired nice with steaks but after dinner dropped off again with very little finish. Definitely on it's downhill, should have drank a few years ago but didn't have enough experience with this producer to know that. 50+5+9+11+7=82 |
