  • From my dad’s Virginia cellar, he bought this on release in Massachusetts. It accompanied my parents moving to a Virginia, and last year back north to Connecticut to my cellar. Well traveled, but the wine is excellent. Hard to believe it’s almost 30 years old. It’s in a zone where the lingering fruit and aged bottle sweetness come together and amplify the wine. Ninety minutes after opening it’s even fresher than it was on opening, making me very glad to have another bottle. What is surprising is that there’s not a lot of aged character at this age. It’s not a full-fruited on release bruiser, but it hasn’t settled into retirement either. Probably another ten years or more to enjoy its evolution.

  • Opened this gem as the third of seven wines at a dinner party tonight. Paired it with fettuccine with black truffles. The wine was fantastic! Still had some fruit after 29 years! Had a lot of the expected “old wine” flavors of leather and spice. It was a great surprise and was the wine of the night.

  • This wine reminded me of how good Napa Cabernet can be. Could easily pass for a wine half its age and has many more years to go. Just classic Cabernet notes and everything in balance. I have never had a Beringer Private Reserve that disappointed. It is so consistently good and pricing has remained remarkably stable, making it even more attractive

  • 1995 Berringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon

    Cellared since release
Ca. Cab tasting of Friday night group, Sept 22, 2023.
Decanted for sediment (20 minutes) and returned to corked bottle.
Deep ruby color in glass with a brown rim. Complex nose of aged Cabernet, fruit, plums, wet earth, and cedar.
Beautifully aged, sweet plum fruit, which was very much alive. Excellent balance, soft and almost totally resolved tannins, along with a 20 second finish.
For me, everything you could want in an aged Napa cab.
Tied for WTN with 1994 Martha's Vineyard Heitz Cab.
Drink up over the next year or so.

    94 points.

  • Soft red color, consistent to the edges. Pleasant aromas of plums and cherries. Soft and silken on the palate, cherries, tobacco, bit of plum, cedar. Refined tannins, bright acidity, great balance. Finishes moderately long, cherries and spice. Lovely but starting to fade. I'd drink over the next 2 years or so.
