2000 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Merlot Los Carneros

Cork completely dry despite proper storage. Nose on opening dominant varietal with mild vinuousness. Color deep ruby, obscured by corkdust (did not filter due to potential fragility). Nose of dusty cherry, still some tart fruit notes with addition of tarry age elements. Like many Carneros bottlings this still has enough acidity to stimulate salivation and carry on to a lovely cocoa dried cherry finish. An excellent performance, why we bought it (untasted from Library for sheer exploration) and nice that having forgotten it, it did not spoil. Good reminder to take others' tasting notes with grain of salt and that a bottle may pass through many stages. Looking forward to tasting the remainder of our vertical 00, 01, 02 over the holidays.

Found one last bottle while doing inventory for CT import. Extracted cork with no effort, in excellent condition. Again, lovely & smooth with aromas of dried violets, leather, tar. Flavors of dried blueberry and earth.

Initial nose of caramel, tar, bacon & rosemary; restrained fruit. On palate ripe blackberries, black pepper, asphalt & chocolate. Med+ finish.
Day 2 - more mellow & integrated, but less interesting.

Heady Sonoma pinot nose. Smoky, bing cherry, sour cherry, sage, bay & moss. Not as rich as I'd have expected, other than this bottling ending up at Costco (which never seems to happen with the really great stuff).

Heavily extracted wine, with Paso fruit notes somewhat overrich. Alcohol dominates and acidity could be higher.

41% Grenache, 40% Petite Sirah, 19% Zinfandel - this rich dark wine had a nose of blackberry juice, bramble, blueberry jam, herbs and black pepper. chewy mouthfeel but tannins not inordinate. will leave other bottles to soften a bit.

lovely for such an older bottle of an varietal not typically judged age-worthy. the acidity provided backbone, but enough fruit to engage. aging deepened the complexity.

tasted at winery over Thanksgiving holiday, sampled this wine and it was much better. opened our other bottle to see what a month did, and it had settled down. we saw the same dynamic at work with neighboring winery Grey Wolf's Lone Wolf bottling (admittedly at half the price) - nice to find another affordable blend from Paso.

new labeling from Lone Madrone as it goes for wider distribution. tried this perhaps a bit too early, it was quite jangly and not integrated. hoping some time will help this come together.

Leather, cassis, dried cherry, tobacco, thyme, cedar and vanilla showing through in this mellowed blend that's getting a bit tired. Slight vegetal note combined with vinous aged character made it a bit off with the pairing.

Jessup is in downtown Yountville and tasting is open later than most others, so I assumed we purchased these under the glow of a day's accumulated tastings. However, opened this one up and found it was delicious - rich cherry fruit, true merlot varietal character, easy on the oak - wonderful.
